Great pub. One of my favorite pubs in Oxford. It’s a bit off the beaten path(most people just walk right past the alleyway it’s on) and has a totally different atmosphere — much more open, airy, and bright than the typical English pub. Lots of tables, usually plenty of places to sit. I’ve never tried the food. The beer and cider selection is great, and they have a pub quiz every Sunday night. They also offer free Wi-Fi, which is nice. The bartenders are friendly, and the pub has a moderately sized«regular» crowd. It usually gets busier immediately after dinner and actually gets less busy as the night wears on, which is a nice change from the other pubs in Oxford. If you’re looking for a place to have a pint after 10PM, Far from the Madding Crowd is probably the most relaxed place to do so. No fuss, just good drinks and a comfortable atmosphere. The name really says it all.

The un-pubbiest pub you’ll ever go to in Oxford. It’s in a super modern(read:70s) building; they’ve decent beers, tables, it’s out of the way, they’ve a really good pub quiz, and games and bookes. And free wifi. And they’re just nice.

They always have a great selection of beer. There’s also acres of space and they even have free wifi.

I have only been in this place twice. Never eaten there so cannot comment. On both visits the beer was vinegar and had to be spat out and changed for something else. So although this place would seem a real ale haven, my experience is that they do not know how to keep the beer. The premises are not traditionaly a pub site, so maybe the cellars are not cool enough in the summer? Who knows… I wouldn’t go there again… well maybe in winter time :-)

Dressed up(slightly) pub grub was fairly solid, good selection of wines, and they offered free wi-fi, just what I was looking for on a Saturday afternoon. However they’ve got no electrical outlets to plug into and the majority of the folks in there were unable to log on. They ‘reset the router’ to no avail… well for the bulk of us who were not standing on top of the table in the far corner holding onto a spoon with our toes and doing our best vrischika-asana to pull in some signal. Its down and alley and out of the way of the masses as the name implies, worth a stop in but probably not a special trip.

A great place with an excellent selection of real ales and very tasty food. Inside it errs on the side of being functional and basic and because of the scarce furnishing it can get very noisy indeed. So, far from the madding crowd it may be as it’s well tucked away into an alleyway, but quiet it ain’t.

For the name alone, this pub is worth going to. Off the main road, but only a little bit, this pub is an aptly named escape down a side alley. Pub trivia is a fun evening. Food and beer are well priced and selection is ok. Nothing too special about the inside of the pub, and it doesn’t compete on atmosphere, but for a quick bite to eat or, as the name suggests, an escape from the crowd outside, it is not a bad stop.

This place is floaded with Real ale! The staff are great as well. Though there was a young loud crowd at one end the atmosphere was pleasant. Food was available. The usual fare catered for, see menu in pics.
