An excellent café hidden down an alleyway called Mauds Yard in the olde Market town of Pontefract. The building is oblong shaped, its length running parallel to the old alleyway with frecnh doors swinging out in summer. The name instantly associated itself with old women, frilly doilys and pots of tea, however don’t be put off as Mauds café is bang up to date. Presumably like York, the capital city of Yorkshire which also has its fair share of random names for streets and alleyways, certain places must have got their names from some of the characters that lived in them, so Maud must have been infamous for her day. I dread to think actually(!) A very slick and polished interior with light stained oak laminate flooring and panels and cream walls is the perfect environment for the well presented but honest and down to earth food consisting of Sandwiches wraps and jacket potatoes and all coffees with a contemporary edge. the place is light and airy but quiet enough to get away from the hustle and bustle of the market in full swing unlike some of the other places in town The staff are extremely friendly and effiecent and always welcoming and remembering of faces. At night they also have a full license and Maud’s turns into a bar, which is quite popular and busy. certainly one of the more clean and aspiring cafes in pontefract, probably the main one to go to now.

Decent café wine-bar, on an alleyway just off the market square in the centre of Pontefract. They serve a range of sandwiches, wraps, paninis, jacket potatoes, salads & breakfasts. I had a chicken & bacon salad which was perfectly good, if not exactly inspired, and pretty generously sized.

Down a little ginnel, the perfect place for a drink, snack or lunch during the day. My children like to sit in the end bit, as it’s slightly separate & has big sofa type seats along the wall. The buttered cinammon toast is fab for a snack! It’s a wine bar in the evenings, but I have young children & haven’t been.
