Our nearest Supermarket in a nice airy Mall with other shops including jewelers, shoeshops, opticians, estate agents, cleaners and cafes. It is a busy area and yet one can get ones shopping done quickly because there are so many check outs. Items are easy to find and are tastfully displayed. Good parking and also a large section where one can deposit old wine bottles. There used to be a series of small banks in this mall but there are only ATMs left. There is also a shop selling wheelchairs and mobility cars etc Across the road is a small Marks and Spencers which we use for variety.

Another massive mega-store, on the same order as a Wal-Mart Supercenter like in the States. Except this store is 90% food and groceries, but only 10% clothes and electronics. Wider selection of clothes and other non-food items than the Tesco I shopped last week, including a small shoe department(boots!) and an aisle of kitchen items(drip coffee maker for £7!). With this shop, I think I’ve fully kitted out my flat. Prices are in line with what I expected, as Asda is «part of the Wal-Mart family». Slightly lower than Tesco and much lower than the urban Sainsbury’s in Reading Town Centre. It’s a huge store and it’s very easy to spend a couple of hours in here without realizing it. One annoying thing — Bill, the greeter, kept announcing on the overhead how much he’d love to help and kept pointing out the specials and hours. Between that and the Asda advertisements(mostly Christmas specials and electronics items), there was barely a moment of peace. I have no idea how Brits got by before these mega-stores came to be. This store literally sells every type of food and in many different varieties. Lots of ready-to-cook and ready-to-serve items in many departments. Compared to the States, the produce section was much larger. It was also a little odd(as an American) seeing a massive aisle of spirits(whiskey, scotch, etc.). In many places back home, these are in a separate section or even a different store to keep them away from the kiddies. Loads of parking and a petrol station, Asda is also served by the Reading bus lines — numbers 21 and 22 stop right in front after a ~20 minute ride from the depot. I snapped and posted pictures for you!

Asda is a reasonably cheap supermarket, with cheap food, and products.

Huge store with other shops in the same complex — boots chemist, hairdresser, newsagent. It has a petrol station with nearly always the best prices for petrol and diesel. I find this Asda very convenient and good value. They nearly always have great offers on food and drink.

Asda in Lower Earley is not my nearest supermarket but for me it’s worth the journey because of the cheaper prices. Not only that, but the range of stock is good and I can find some items there which I can’t get elsewhere. The only minus points is that items on special offer are slow to be restocked when gone from the shelves and the number of open checkouts can vary from week to week.

Handy complex with a variety of shops including Boots and a newsagents and Asda itself is open 24 hours and is famously cheap. I just can’t stand this store though — I find it stressful to even set foot inside the door! I don’t know what it is about this place, but people seem to leave their manners at the door. It’s a busy supermarket and moving around can be difficult, so the added obnoxiousness of some of the store’s patrons makes the experience unpleasant. I got bored of being walked into without so much as an acknowledgement so decided to do my shopping elsewhere instead.

This is just around the corner from me and is really handy, it is open 24hrs and the parking is good(apart from the occassional crater in the tarmac) This is also bargain-hunter’s heaven, not only do they have some really crazy deals —(1 for £2.50 or two for £2.00) which I don’t really understand the theory behind, although I guess it must work — but they also have a few bargain displays splattered around, and if you can get the timing right you can get something that was £3.00 for 10 pence! There is also a Boots, a post office, hairdressers and few other little shops, and the photo centre is brilliant.

Obviously price cutting Asda beats the other supermarkets hands down! The only problem I have found with this store is empty shelves and offers that don’t ring through the till so you then have to go and queue at customer services to get your refund. Few good little shops in the building such as boots, a newsagent, travel agent, opticians. Carpark is a bit of a mare as since Asda abolished the £1 trolleys, the trolleys are just left all over the car park.
