The hotel car park gave the impression of a thriving bubbly hub, where social interplay and a wonderful atmosphere were abundant. Deceptive! The staff that greeted me and checked is in were friendly enough, and I was eager to dump my luggage and grab some hardy pub grub. As I entered the room, I waft of aged smokey pong, met my nostrils. Okay, I thought, we checked the bathroom, half used toiletries, and a bathroom in dire need of some updating. The bed didn’t fare much better, we slept contorted into an uncomfortable v shape. The TV, well, I think there was one channel that didn’t have a complete snow storm white out on, that was bearable enough to watch something. So off we popped to the restaurant, wow. Left food on the tables, chairs seemingly unmatched with tables, or overly gathering round tables. The floor had remnants of peoples meals, to be quite frank, we were a little appalled at the hygiene. So we eventually found somewhere relatively clean, i.e. devoid of food scraps and I went to the bar to procure some drinks. The beer selection although not vast, was okay. The wine however, came in a scratched plastic glass, filled to the brim, to the end that it was almost overflowing. The hostess did apologize. So maybe we should have taken heed and popped to the local garage for food, rather than chance the food at the Wee Waif. But we braved it. I was served an assortment of stale, but oh so, ‘crunchy’ tortillas with a medley of different dips, resting upon them, literally, in tiny paper dip cups. I really hope these were resting on a clean surface before they were came into contact with my food. In one, dip the sour cream was swimming in water it had separated from. The chicken and the vegetables for the fajitas were unfortunately, charred with very little flavor. And they really did not come out sizzling. I would highly recommend avoiding this place, the hygiene was awful, the food was abysmal. The finale of this tale, was not one of a happy ending, it was one restless night of sleep, a bad back concluded by a bad tummy. Not good!

We popped in once after the refurb, hoping to get some lunch. Alack, no luck. The place was dead and the staff were too busy chatting to even get us a drink, let alone serve us food. Menus were out, but apparently they weren’t serving. A real let down.

I stayed at the Wee Waif in November 2008 on a Fri/Sat night, and the room was perfect for a one or two night stay. The bed was comfy, as were the pillows. It looks like the hotel has recently undergone a refurbishment. The bathroom was clean and tidy, although the shower was not very powerful. However for a short stay it was perfectly ok. The bar had a nice atmosphere, and clean and modern. The prices were reasonable. We ate in the restaurant on both mornings for breakfast, and one the first evening for dinner. The food was typical low cost pub grub, and perfectly edible, although the cutlery and glasses could have been cleaner, for example the glasses used for orange juice in the morning still had bit of orange left in them. The hotel is located on a busy road, and next to a petrol station, however there was very little noise and this was not a problem during our stay. Would I stay again, yes.
