One of the few businesses that flourished and thrived throughout 2009 was pound shops and $ 99 stores.
Hundreds of new ones popped up across the UK last year with hordes of customers rushing in desperately seeking bargains. Depressingly, the majority of them seemed to specialise in selling crap that looks destined for landfill. I’m talking about toiletries that smell of strong chemicals, bin bags that rip when you try to open them and crisps that taste like cardboard.
Refreshingly, Poundland has been going for nearly 20 years and specialises in selling discounted groceries, toiletries and home essentials by established and well know brands. For — you guessed it — exactly a pound.
