Friendly and good food. Best view from beer garden

We ended up here because our preferred jaunt, the Sportsman, was closed on Monday lunchtime. The pub benefits from friendly staff though they did feel somewhat impatient as we dawdled over an impressively wide selection of food. They had one local beer on tap and several indie ciders to choose from, as well as an impressive selection of cordials to try. Although there was a wide ranging food menu, there were surprisingly few vegetarian options and none at all in the 2 meals for £11 range. The vegetarian lasagne was reasonable but pricey for what it was. The hunter’s chicken came with an ungenerous portion of chips and was billed as coming with salad or roast vegetables. As it was, there was no choice and it came with peas and an unadventurous salad which included a lot of raw onion. Onion rings were meant to come too and eventually turned up with another order, below. The same could be said of the salmon salad which was similar, again with lots of raw onion, though the salmon felt fresh and reasonably sized. The best of the lot was asparagus and poached eggs from the starter menu, which along with a portion of onion rings made a good main. The pub itself is spacious, with a nice selection of books to browse and games to play. Outside is a great children’s playground and lovely views. There’s lots of parking and even a drinks vending machine for those who arrive when the pub is shut. We are unlikely to go back, largely because Sheffield offers a lot of choice of pubs, but it was good to visit this one.

Me and the other reviewer must have been on totally different days! I have been many times and always found the food fantastic, especially with most recent set of owners, who have great links with a local butchers. Reasonably priced, amazing food, great views, loads of different beers on tap. Nice one!

Been here quite a few times over the years and has varying degrees of quality. My last visit was with 8 friends about 3 months back, we went for Sunday lunch, we did’nt have a booking but waited an hour or so for the right table and placed our food order, when it eventually came, we all had different things mostly, I had the traditional fish and chips, which was uneventful, in fact pretty boring and left me with a greasy after taste. The place is a pub that also serves food, usually quite busy and also has a outdoor play area for children and some fanatastic views over Lodge Moor and Rivelin Valley. I would prefer to drink here rather then eat, has ample car parking and is open throughout the day. It has become a bit of a favourite for ramblers as it is is surrounded by open countryside.
