Shades of Raj, on Station Road in Solihull, touts itself as a ‘Contemporary innovative restaurant’. Now, I have absolutely no idea what that means, but what I can tell you is that they’re also an Indian restaurant when they’re not too bus innovating, and a pretty good one at that. The restaurant isn’t the biggest, but it works, although I’d recommend booking just to be on the safe side and to avoid disappointment. They serve all the standard dishes that you’d expect to find in an Indian — kormas, baltis, jalfrezis, etc. — as well as some more exotic dishes, such as Murgh-E-Achari(don’t ask me what it is, after eating it I’m still not entirely confident, although it was certainly good!). Prices are very good, with almost all the mains coming in at £6.99, with a deal for a main, starter, and a rice or naan for £9.95. If you’re looking for an authentic Birmingham curry house, you could do an awful lot worse than Shades of Raj.

This Indian takeaway-come-fancy-restaurant offers a wide range of Bengali and Tandoori dishes at excellent prices and benefits from off-road parking and very friendly staff. Inside, there’s a real traditional feel, but with a subtle contemporary touch. Piped Indian music is complimented by red and white table clothes and themed décor, and everything is usually spotlessly clean, so providing you have no trouble with the staff or the food, eating out here tends to be a fairly pleasant experience. Most dishes cost around £6 and a 3 course meal deal is available for £9.95, which includes any starter and any main of the customer’s choice, with a side of naan. I’ve been visiting here with family for years and have rarely had any major problems. The staff are friendly, but can be a little pedantic and like to rush their customers when things get busy, but the food is usually of a high standard and the friendly, laid-back atmosphere here is great. I’d recommend going for a cheese and onion naan; for some reason it seems to have a little more flavour here than elsewhere.

This place rocks! It’s always a little scary when trying out a new curry house specially when«Shimla Pink» 2 doors down was a shocking disgrace! Shades of Raj didn’t disappoint :-), the King Prawn madras was made to perfection, credit to the chef. The service was excellent, starter very nice and overall a great experience. Will be going here many more times when out in Solihull for a few pints during these summer nights.

The food here is absolutely delicious if your looking for an Indian restaurant in Solihull I think this is the place you should eat. I especially recommend the Jalfrezi which is very tasty and quite spicy. They also do takeaway which I have never tried but I am sure is good. The staff are always very friendly and there is a nice atmosphere inside.
