Interior design and general atmosphere is great. But have to be honest, food does not quite meet standards that price would suggest. Have not tried tapas, this refers only to mains. Does have potential though.

Concept of this is great: I love tapas and I love Thai! The restaurant is small and beautifully decorated, with a massive Buddha on the wall. This place would be best for pre-drinks nibbles, or anyone watching their weight/not sure if they like Thai cuisine as the tapas-size portions aren’t huge, so could be considered quite pricey for what you get. However, it’s got a nice contemporary yet laid back atmosphere for a night out/weekend meet up for a group of friends and friendly Thai & British staff. This place didn’t have a high chair for our son when we visited one weekend — so if you have babies/toddlers this is a point to consider.

Nice atmosphere, friendly staff. Food was a disappointment. The yellow egg noodles were bland beyond all reason, the chilli beef was good but came sat on top of bland boiled rice so really needed some sauce. The ‘tempura’ prawns came as 5 prawns deep fried in breadcrumbs. Not very tempura and certainly not worth the 7 quid. Overall I would say that this place has massive potential, but currently does not merit the prices they are charging.

Absolutely unique Eurasian experience! Food excellent — friendly and laid back staff. Terrific ambience. Always busy, recommend that you book. It’s nice to find a place that’s different!

Summary: The good side of normal for Southampton, very student-ready in the heart of bedsit land, friendly and good value. It’s good to have a decent neighbourhood restaurant nearby, and we’ve not had many round here despite the huge potential clientele from the University. Mango is a friendly place, run with energy and warmth. The menu is described as «thai tapas» which translates to small plates of pretty standard Thai fare. We had a shared meal: the phad thai, which was a bit sticky and bland but still enough for two in the large(non-tapas) size; what the menu called«dim sum» and what we’d copy the Americans calling pork pot-stickers, served with a dipping sauce and tasty enough although a bit pink and salty; spring rolls, served with a sweet chilli dipping sauce, pretty good; what the menu called«prawn tempura», actually fried in breadcrumbs and served with a dipping sauce, the best of the tapas. We also bought cocktails, which were large and tasty enough although I suspect the fruit juices were not fresh — the real cocktail barman was off so they were limited to the selections on the cocktail menu. The restaurant itself is bright with colourful décor and has a good low noise ambience. Its rather small, so the tables are too close together and we felt cramped — avoid the front tables(with the bench) if you don’t like sitting really close to strangers. It was also unusually hot and stuffy. We didn’t look at the other three rooms in the building. Overall a good addition to the local scene which we’ll go back to, maybe for lunch or for a late meal(they are open until midnight) one day after going out to live music along Portswood Road.

Went here last week for the first time — it’s a thai restaurant in portswood. Is lovely inside, quite busy in the front but we were in a small room at the back. Food was nice, but hotter than expected, and the staff were very laid back. Did have to wait a bit for courses but overall a fun experience. Not as cheap as some places though but worth it for the experience. You can choose whether to have tapas or a main menu, the portions aren’t overly large so may want to order more than you think you need.
