The Last Post

I love the inside of the pub, I love the history of the place, the old city postal office, distributing mail in Southend. Therefore there is a lot of typical décor — a postbox, mail, a bike hanging from the ceiling. I love the inside, the drinks are well priced too.
The tables are often sticky, and the food isn’t great, but it is a wetherspoons so… I’ll leave it at that.

The Last Post is a huge and a potentially nice English bar or pub. They have two large bars and low and high tables, spread throughout the large area. The atmosphere is light and spacious and characterised by lots of dark wood and green. There is plenty of choice in beers and ales, the bar food menu looks pretty good and they have good looking specials on most days.
I found most of the tables are sticky from spills and many still had food crumbs, so either the are not kept clean, or the wood just soaks up all the spills. In any case it is very unpleasant. The same is true for the menus, they are often dirty and sticky from spills. The toilets are kept reasonably clean but the smell in there is horrendous.
They seem to have security personnel on busy days, but I haven’t seen any incidents.
The service formula is where they falter. There is no service at the tables except from delivering previously ordered food to your table. You have to order everything at one of the two bars, for food you have to give your table number. I could live with that if the service at the bars was swift and courteous. Unfortunately, it is not. They always seem to keep minimum personnel at the bars, so the waiting time is long. They don’t acknowledge you, like saying «let me finish this order, then I’ll be right with you», so you’re at their mercy. Even today I was trying to order something while it was very quiet with a barman that was typing something on the cash register. I was standing right in from of him waiting to order with nobody else around. He never looked or acknowledged me and just walked away when he was done typing. That is rude in my point of view.
Another time I ordered a pint of Heineken at one of the bars and after having paid, the girl told me they were out and to go to the other bar to get it. That is just ridiculous.
To their credit and my disappointment, I have to say that all bars I have visited in Southend-​on-​Sea were similar, in their lack of service and cleanliness. So they are not worse than others.

Not a bad Weatherspoons and one of the few places in this town you can get a decent pint of beer at a reasonable price. Its typical W design nothing special but obviously popular.

My friends took me to their local pub, a short walk from their flat. The pub fare was good, and the drinks were good. I can’t say anything bad about it. I had their curry which was really tasty, and the second time tried their steak. If you’re in the Southend area, The Last Post is a good place to stop in.

Not the best weatherspoons in the country, lots of old men drinking. more of a drinking pub than eating!

I have always had a good meal here And the prices are excellent, both for food and drink. You usually do see quite a few colorful characters, but if you manage to find a quiet spot they wont bother you too much. Can be a bit rowdy at night, as any other Pub in Town Centre, but during the day it’s fine. Only other drawback is the staff are very slow at clearing and especially wiping down the tables.

Cheapest pub in Southend, quality of custom reflect that, great place to go with the lads to get hammered but not a good place to eat or take the family. A lot of alcoholics drink here as it’s so cheap so it is often full of old men.

A bit chavvy and yet cheap. This is THE place to go before you go out clubbing although I’ve also been here for food. It’s not the best but you get what you pay for which is ok food at an ok price.
It’s always busy here which goes to show that it’s a good pub.

I use Wetherspoon’s quite a few times a year as it is most convenient more than anything. It is overall not too bad, not that I would go recommending to anyone. I understand that you go to the bar to order your food as this cuts on costs. The food is not piping hot but comes out fairly hot. Quite a poor service, very cramped and quite lively/​noisy, but good for a hot meal and cheap couple of drinks before jetting of!

Cheapest in town. Reflected in the majority of the clientel. Some unsavioury looking characters. Ok for cheap quick grub no frills. Beer always of good quality and premium lagers sold very cold, which is the way i like em.

The Last Post is an excellent pub close to Southend railway station. We often meet up here at the start of a night out as the drinks prices are very cheap and it’s a huge pub. Although there is no music played in the pub, the atmosphere is always very good as there is so much conversation and laughing going on. Through the day, you can pop in for some lunch or a coffee at very good prices — they always have special offers on their food. I have very good memories of funny things which have happened in this place over the years.

Large friendly pub with a great atmosphere. Sometimes a long wait is involved in getting served drinks but they are part of the J.D. Wetherspoons chain offering great meal deals with selected main meals two for £6 something. Recently refurbed toilets which are so much more improved. Punters can choose from various different settings to their table as there are sectioned booths they can sit in for the more group intimate setting or general chairs in and out of the sunlight. A very good pub and very cheap, can get very busy in the evenings and the staff are very professional ID’ing everyone. A great place which I would highly recommend.

Not a bad Wetherspoons. Cheap food and drink. I always come here when I’m shopping in Southend. They serve a value for money breakfast. Was in here last week and ordered a new meal on their 2 meals for £6ish menu. It was lambs mince and dumplings, chips and peas. I won’t be ordering this again as they had over microwaved it and it was very salty. That said I like most of the rest of the menu. Nice quick service and clean surroundings. There’s a nice family area, which I sometimes use if I am shopping on my own.

I have visited this pub a number of times, it is afterall a significant venue at the centre of the town. Most times have been on a Friday or Saturday evening being the first port of call before finding one of the mini clubs to end the evening in. Yes it is a Wetherspoons so the beer is cheap, but because of this the bar is packed the staff at a premium and the experience has always been one of frustration. Of late I have used this pub as a lunch venue, the food was bland and frankly awful won’t do that again. But there desire to engage me in cheap Real Ale during the week is always going to keep me coming in. This pub used to be a large mailing centre hence the name, it runs through a complete building starting on one road (Weston Road) and coming out at another (Clifftown Road). I did make the mistake of asking to meet a friend here once and walked through the bar, one end to the other a couple of times, not knowing which entrance the colleague would be waiting for me at. Wearing a suit caused a level consternation for the patrons who kept glaring at me uneasily, when I mentioned this to my friend he pointed out that during the day a few unsavoury types will frequent, due to the prices, and my suit would indicate police.
