Tyndall’s Restaurant

A tasteful conversion is what Tyndall’s Restaurant is. From the outside it really could be mistaken for a house, if the two long signs either side of the big windows weren’t there. So keep your wits about you otherwise you might just walk past it as I did on first encounter. After finding out about Tyndall’s through a friend — ‘you must go’ — she said. So, wanting to see what all the fuss was about, a couple of months later, off I went with another friend. There is Tyndall’s restaurant and the then the bar (Landsdowne Bar), both owned by the Tyndall family. The bar has a great open feel to it, and if you would rather, you can eat dinner here on tuesday to saturday instead of upstairs in the dining rooms of Tyndall’s. If you don’t want Tyndall’s menu in the Lansdowne bar at dinner time, you go up to Tyndall restaurant which we did. The food was delicious and there is no doubt it’s home prepared and cooked. They use local ingredients such as shrimps and black pudding. Other likely dishes that you might come across on your visit include sautéd lamb’s kidneys in red wine sauce, baked sea bass with fennel, and honey-​roast duck with black cherries. Definitely worth a visit!

Tell me why? I don’t like Mondays… well, you’d be in good company, because neither does Tyndalls. It refuses to open on a Monday, presumably for that very reason. Ah, Monday. Perhaps that most feared of days which has inspired countless songs and no doubt a plethora of office-​based or school-​located violence. Moving swiftly on from such, er, controversial topics to something far more pleasant, in the loverly seaside town of Southport you shall find this restaurant, converted Victorian townhouse in form (there’s a lot of those in the Port, so you could easily miss this — keep sharp-​eyed) and welcoming in ambience.
It’s maintained all its character and townhouse antiquities and looks quaint and cute, right down to the 23 next to the door and indeed on the window above the door to indicate that it is actually 23 Hoghton Street. The adorability factor continues throughout with the learning of the fact that it’s a family run place, presided over by passionate folk who are so good at their art they’ve managed to stay in the Which? Good Food Guide for five years. Tyndalls is the restaurant with an elegant dining room upstairs, Lansdowne is the separate bar downstairs, both of which serve up goodies. You can grab pre-​dinner beverages before heading up or perhaps some coffee when things are winding down.
Fresh fish is one of the specialities here, what with it being a seaside restaurant and all, but it’s also a good place to relax and have some social nibbles, with the bar serving up sandwiches, seafood or meat platters, soups, steaks, paella, salads and so on. Generally this little gem straddles the best of both worlds, and while it has a traditional feel the food it serves is certainly not stuck in the past. Give it a try if you like your tasty bites in equally tasty surroundings — you’ll not be disappointed!
