Staying for free at my cousins house in St Albans during our Olympic Holiday, meant of course, we had to buy them the odd dinner. It was their choice & they chose Café Rouge as they come here quite often .(They’re Foodies also) First, it is in a great Art Deco style building, with a great 1930’s French train Station/Café vibe. Its was raining this evening so having a glass roof added to the atmosphere. The service was excellent, as they let us take are time to order & no rush in between courses. The food is great simple Classic French dishes with good size portions, great flavors & presentation. Unlike some places, still serving over pretentious Nouvelle cuisine.(Paul Bocouse, if you’re reading, we’re in a different decade now Sorry.) So when you’re in town & you’d like to get your French fix, head on down the hill to Café Rouge have a glass or 2 of a nice French wine form the wine list & indulge. Photos of the dishes we had are posted. Cheers J

Overpriced and its like having a meal in and oversized art deco freezer(in winter). We had a meal at Café Rouge at the beginning of this year(feb/march) and it was freezing inside! Every time someone opened the door I was shivering like a leaf. Even my ugg boots, woolly jumper and half a bottle of wine didn’t help. Beautiful building :)

The story goes that the building was previously owned by Ryder Seeds. They built it as a seed hall to provide a bright and light place to sort and dry their seeds before packeting them. Ryder’s lasting legacy, of course, is the Ryder Cup golf match, which was originally sponsored by Ryder’s and first played on the Verulam course in St Albans. After Ryder was sold the building was apparently used by the Royal Mail as a canteen. It would be interesting to compare the menus between then and now!

The building that houses this branch of café rouge is delightful with a glass roof that makes it feel like you’re in some old fashioned movie. The location is good too, just outside of the main city centre so accessible by train. The restaurant itself is nicely ladi out — I ate at a table of two next to a large party and we didn’t feel overshadowed by them. The food on my last visit was not much to write home about — bangers and mash were overly stodgy with gloopy mash which definitely didn’t taste fresh. however, if it’s ambiance you are after, for a staff party or group night out it is a nice place to start.

This branch of Café Rouge is worth visiting just for the building. It is a beautiful Art Deco style building with a very light and airy feel and lovely stained glass windows. The food is the usual Café Rouge food, French style a little uninspired but good enough. A steak baguette with frites always goes down well. Lunchtimes there are groups of women with pushchairs and business meetings going on there and there is plenty of room for everyone. The waiting staff were nice enough the last time I visited. It’s only a short walk to the very centre of town and there is limited parking on Holywell Hill itself.

This restaurant is part of a chain of Café Rouge’s, but it is one of the better branches that I have experienced. The restaurant itself has a glass roof, so has a kind of conservatory feel to it. The staff are really friendly, and the food is amazing. It can be a little pricey, but its worth it. I also really like to go down there on a Saturday morning for a coffee and a pastry(which are delicious!).

I know this is a chain and you can expect the same food and drink you get from any other Café Rouge but this one is different. The complete glass and art deco construction of the building gives a truly cosmopolitan feel. There are several suggestions as to what the building was before it was a restaurant but it lends itself to it’s new role perfectly. On a sunny day the light shines in through the glass roof and shows off the building and the ambiance to the best effect. the menu is what you’d expect from a Café Rouge and we have never had a bad experience with the food here. The service can be a little slow when busy but the surroundings make up for it. A lovely spot for a lunch time snack or Sunday Lunch.
