This was one of the only fish and chips places still open at 7:45 in St. Ives that we could find on our first day here. We stop in and get the standard cod and chips with salt and vinegar, takeaway to eat at the beach. Two things: 1. They’re huge. I split one with a friend and it was more than enough. At about 5 pounds, that’s a cheap meal. 2. It’s really good. To be fair, it’s my first«real» English fish and chips; I’d only tried them once before in Massachusetts, but I don’t typically like fried food and I enjoyed this. The guys are nice and it’s quality food for cheap.

Fish and chips in the US cannot begin to compare with how incredible the food is at Balancing Eel! Visiting St. Ives wtih UK friends for a few days and went to balancing eel to satisfy our cravings for sea food. We ordered the Hake on the recommendation of the waitress. Great choice! Flavorful, moist, just the right amount of crispy batter. Chips were thick cut, hot and tasty. And it went great with the other English standards: mushy peas, pickled egg and onion and curry sauce. For desert try the treacle pudding with custard. Wow. I will definitely be back… maybe tomorrow.

The Balancing Eel is both a takeaway and restaurant just set back from the seafront in the pretty town of St Ives. We popped in here for a late lunch after a hard days walk and it definitely filled a gap. I went for the cod a chips. The fish was very fresh but a little greasy and the chips were cooked well. The also offer a number of healthier options such as grilled fish, and the the option to substitute salad for chips. WHY, WHY??? The service was excellent, the young lad was friendly and willing to accommodate all our requests. Not the best fish and chips I have ever eaten, but pretty darn tasty all the same.

this is the best fish and chip shop in st Ives. in a central location opposite the beach it has a wide variety of fish from cod to scampi they also do childrens meal boxes which are great for any one under the age if about 8 years old. they cod and chips that I enjoyed were skinless and boneless although not massive it was definately enough. if you want to have the traditional fish and chips by the sea this is the place to go.
