«If music be the food of love, play on» … says Duke Orsino to kick off Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Its not surprising that the café located right in front of Shakespeare’s birthplace would name itself after one of his famous lines. What is surprising however is that the shop fails to do any sort of justice to the expectation that i had based on the name. This was an ordinary restaurant … nothing spectacular. I ordered a spaghetti bolognaise. It was slightly more bland than what i am used too … but eatable. One of my friends ordered a panini, which at £7 costs a fortune, but the taste isn’t commensurate. The same holds for the crêpe. In fact if it had not been for the fact that i was on a touristy day out(which lowered my expectations), i would have been pretty disappointed. You have to pay for your food when you order(in cash, they don’t accept credit cards). We did so, and our order included an ice-cream which was to be served after we had finished. But when the time came to serve the ice-cream, they told us it was not available. Somewhat sloppy !!! «The food of love» is not value for money. It sells average food at above average prices. But then if you eat here it ensures that you save some time during your day trip to stratford. Maybe that makes it worth it.

We came here late afternoon just for a cup of tea, and decided it was a really nice café. It is located opposite the Shakespeare birthplace museum and looks like it would be a great place for either a snack lunch or something more substantial they do everything from sandwiches to pasta, and even savoury crepes and they also serve freshly squeezed orange juice. Unfortunately we were in the shopping area of town with a group of friends and so did not find this place when we were looking for somewhere for lunch, mores the pity as where we ate the food was nowhere near as nice as the food here looks.
