The Balmoral

Had a good experience here, not perfect but hey, it’s on the water in Sunderland!
We chose the family room, which is big enough for four, mainly two children and two adults, but I wouldn’t recommend four adults.
Positives — right on the water/​beach area in Sunderland. Great views, you can walk out on the wave breaker to the lighthouse, but hold your nose, the lighthouse smells like a stale urinal. I’m guessing all of the fisherman who fish out there use the lighthouse as their piss column. Easy to get to and find, but the parking is TIGHT! It is within walking or driving distance of restaurants and pubs, it’s a walk but you can do it in a car if you prefer.
The family room had four beds and one full bathroom. Good sized room, but no place to put your luggage although they did provide a standing closet. The breakfast the next morning was acceptable. You can choose between the standard English breakfast, or just toast and eggs, or cereal, and a couple of other smaller choices. Breakfast was good. The owners are extremely nice and courteous and will cater to your comfort or any request.
Negatives — Seems most places in England do not use a bed sheet. They use a main sheet or comforter. Mine felt and looked like they had not recently been washed. I was pretty creeped out. My daughter felt the same. Beds were lumpy and very soft but I know I slept like a ROCK anyway due to our travels.
I would stay there again.
