«No appointment necessary» can often seem like damning with faint praise. In this case, it’s a genuine boon. This is your in-and-out barber; tidy trims and buzz-cutting, no messing. While it means that sometimes you may have to wait around ten minutes, it gives enough time for the following to sink in: this chap has had the pleasure to have known heads of three generations. And I’m one of them(oi, third-gen, cheeky) — I remember getting a short back and sides when the shop was located over the road and you could watch Sons and Daughters as locks were shorn. Oh the plastic capes, oh the piece of tissue to soothe your itchy neck on the walk home, oh the TV remote control in a pouch for scissors. But don’t misunderstand, this is not a piece of nostalgia: here you will get a perfect haircut for a reasonable price. You don’t last 30 years without it. A real Mere Green fixture. Recommended.

My husband likes his hair short and is a bit of a DIY buff with the clippers. But sometimes I can’t helping thinking he needs that professional touch just to keep things as neat as possible. As he was reluctant to go anywhere too dainty, I persuaded him to go to these no-frills, no-nonsense men’s barbers in Mere Green. I was there to hold his hand. Run by Kevin for many, many years the boys and men of Four Oaks have long been coming here for their short back and sides. Busby’s doesn’t pretend to be anything it isn’t, tapping into the fact that most blokes and kids don’t want to be pampered or fussed over, all they want is a good quality haircut and then to be on their way. Kev broke out the clippers and did the business. It was the neatest my husband’s hair had looked in ages, and even he had to admit the benefits of letting a talented Gents barber do the work for him. There were no balms, no lotions and no discussions about holidays, just a bloody good quality haircut.
