Excellent local chippy that has recently been refitted, improving what was already an excellent experience. I visit most weeks for their excellent fish & chips. There is a good choice of alternative items for my family to choose from, a particular favourite been chicken tikka kebab. I find Friday or Saturday between 6:00&7:00 pm to be the best time to visit as there are always plenty on people there at this time so the fish and chips are really fryer fresh. The Crown offers plaice and haddock, however these need to be ordered on entry along with kebabs and a few of other items. Look out for the map on the wall, if you live within half a mile you should be able to find your house, my kids love it!

One of just a few traditional chippies in this most northern tip of the town, this fine takeaway really knows its, ahem, plaice. For here, you can still find a choice between, say, haddock and cod, instead of the not-so-thrilling listing of generic ‘fish’. There’s all the accoutrements of course, but nothing deviant enough to spoil the whole mood of white coats and vinegar. Because of its Four Oaks spot, you may find you’re paying just a bit more for what is threatening to become nationally known as ‘chippy tea’. But it’s almost worth it just for the bright, clean and old school feel compared to the express lane-checkout vibe of those places promising chips but presenting fries in a tray. It has a decent residential catchment, but there should not be too much bother finding a parking spot, either immediately outside or at one of the neighbouring stores which help to create a seemingly growing Walsall Road commercial strip. Most of them are catering to a niche, but a general convenience store and a huge and popular pub are among the set. Worth making a special trip then? There are plenty of those who think this takeaway is chippy royalty — about right for the Crown.

With a couple of local chippies to tempt me, the Crown Takeaway has always done one thing much better than its rivals — lunchtime deals. This is the best time to visit to take advantage of the special offers which don’t always run when it reopens in the evening. A tray of sausage, chips and curry sauce always does the trick and is much nicer than my dull work sandwiches. If you want something a bit more substantial then, yes, the menu gives you everything you want in a local chippy. I’ve tried the large fish and chips and I’ve tasted the doner meat before and both were really nice. But if you’re like me, always feeling naughty, then combine your chippy fix with a quick pint at the local pub a few doors down. Be warned though, this chippy doesn’t stay open as late as other local chippies so it definitely needs to be a fish tea rather than a fish supper.
