Morwellham Quay

Sehr interessanter Platz. Gerade für Menschen mit Geschichtsinteresse. Hier wird auch für Kindereit sehr viel getan. Verkleidungen etc etc. Empfehlenswert auch wenn es nicht gerade billig ist.

Drove in, parked, walked toward to the river, and some bloke started shouting at me that I could not go into the village for nothing. They want £8.00 per person just to walk down a lane for 5 minutes! Damn rip off and a great example of why selfish and greedy rich people should not be allowed to own heritage sites.

At the time of visiting, Devon County Council has just pulled their funding for this venue so hopefully it will remain open.
Celebrating Tin mining and later, Arsenic production, this living museum is a great experience for both young and old.
The Mine tour explains the conditions miners worked in, visit the village and you experience the conditions they lived in.
Demonstrations go on throughout the day explaining thing like how the Assayer worked along with how to make a rope.
Hopefully this place will remain open and providing it does put it on you places to visit list.

While I agree with everything in the other review, I actually found this place deeply depressing. The telling point in the whole of the story told of the village’s industrial past was the mention of how it was only when the machinery shut down with the demise of the local copper mining industry that the villagers heard bird song for the first time. It must have been absolute hell living and working there and this feeling has transmitted itself down the ages to now making a visit interesting but far from pleasurable.

Let’s be honest, the term industrial heritage is enough to make most people this side of Time Team run screaming for the shrubbery, but Morwellham Quay is a unique time capsule brought magically back to life.
Originally a Copper Mine and Harbour village, dating back before the Industrial revolution, the whole village has now been excavated back to its Victorian best with a wealth of experience of what life was like then. Hosts dressed in Victorian garb (and there’s some for visitors too, should they feel so inclined) give talks and demonstrations of Village Life and the fearsome industrial world that took hold of this beautiful Devon valley setting.
The harbour is restored, complete with locally built sailing-​ship, the old industrial railway is revealed, and it is even possible (and somewhat of an eye-​opener) to take the caged railway into the mine for an experience of what people had to suffer in those days to extract the Copper Ore to power the Victorian Empire.
Outside of its industrial setting, it is a delight to see how people lived there in a community. The cottages are restored, a great water-​wheel stands over the village, and the old pub still serves food and drinks to hungry and thirsty travellers. I heartily recommend a visit to this unique venue, but make sure to have a scout through the provided Passport to maximise your enjoyment of the day.
