Good food, just a bit of a wait sometimes. Too many guys behind the counter not working enough !

Visited for lunch based on the previous excellent reviews. Lived up to the expectation. The batter was lovely and crispy, not too thick and greasy and just melted on your mouth. The lunch menu available from 11.30 — 5pm during the week is great value.

The BEST fish and chips in town. This family run fish and chip shop cannot be beaten on quality, the food is perfect every time. Whether its popping in for a portion of chips on your way home from work, or sitting in for a meal in the licensed restaurant before a show at The Palace, you will not get a better meal anywhere else in town. Word of warning though, if you are eating in the restaurant, go hungry, the portions are huge!

This little fish and chip restaurant is well worth the return ticket from London. Whenever I get fish and chips elsewhere I always think of this place. The décor is traditional and plain, and the dining area is small. There is an upstairs part that is only open in the summer season. Staff are friendly. All food is cooked fresh rather than coming off the display cabinet in the takeaway part. Prices are very reasonable and there are some early-bird and ‘combo’ offers. The chips are exactly how they should be: big, slightly crunchy and soft/fluffy on the inside. Batter is amazingly soft and light. Big portions of fish, always very fresh(I’ve had the cod and haddock before). Traditional deserts of fruit and ice-cream(Rossi, a local speciality, of course) also on offer. There are a couple of touches that make this place a cut above the competition: they have table service, air-con, they serve beer and wine, and they accept cards. It is not fancy by any means, but what they do, they do well.

After moving to the area from London, where I had a superb local chippie, it took me a while to find something up to scratch in Southend. Oldhams’ takeaway food is of consistent high quality: chips that are silky on the outside and fluffy on the inside, never shrivelled and dry; fish is mostly cooked to order, by a huge team of efficient staff(you never have to wait long) and the prices are great. They have a good selection of fish, including cod crispies, smaller battered cuts of cod which are the boyf’s favourite. Eating in(downstairs) is a traditional affair, with a measure of old-fashioned formica-topped table charm. Efficiency and food exactly as the takeaway service, and some very good meal deals to keep the prices similar too. Recommended!

Quality fish and chips at very reasonable prices. Oldham’s offers a huge range of classic fish and chip suppers for everyone to enjoy with pensioner specials and pre theatre dinners it’s renowned for being the best in town! The meals area always fresh and tasty and the staff don’t mind if it takes you a while to choose from their extensive menu!

Food fabulous, staff friendly and nice seating area out the back. To enjoy it properly you’ll need to walk there as the parking is very poor around the area. Quite expensive for fish and chips(sit down mains and drinks for two will cost upwards of £20). Many of the locals will ignore their closer fish and chip shops to buy from Oldham’s.

Fish and chips can be an expensive option when considering fast food, although I do think pizza is outrageous. But with the weekday special Oldhams becomes affordable. On entering the normal wait and serve counter greets you, a cheery welcome is always on offer by the staff, the rear downstairs restaurant is small but perfectly adequate, expanding upstairs for the weekend. The staff are very attentive and sit you quickly as well as taking your order at speed, we stayed with the Adam and Eve Special for £5.75 a mix of scampi and cod krispies, small bits of fish heavily battered, naturally accompanied with chips a bread roll and a choice of tea or coffee. The portions which arrived very quickly fresh from the chip counter were large and neither of us could finish completely our meals. Conclusion: A brilliant family run fish and chip shop that never fails to deliver. Great value for the weekly offers although evening prices to me looked a little steep but that could be simply the price of fish today. The restaurant and toilets were very clean and the staff very attentive. We will be back.
