Have eaten Saturday lunch here a few times and always found the food to be fantastic. The menus is limited, but the quality superb and a good selection of wines. Waiting staff can be a little slow, but are friendly and helpful. The challenge is getting a table as they have limited seating/bookings, but worth it if you can get there.

Courgette flower starter was truly memorable and the service efficient and discreet. My steak was just perfect — the cut, tenderness and caramelisation-cooked just how I like it. The signature dessert are the fresh Madeleines with a butterscotch dipping sauce. Pricey at £100 per couple inc. wine but worth it.

So Saturday just gone(28th March) I found myself with my wife in Winchester without kids and staying with friends and a table booked at 8pm at The Black Rat in Winchester. So this looks like it was a pub but now is a rustic/minimalist restaurant serving posh nosh. The restaurant was full, lively and I guess cool. We ordered booze of the bubbly kind so my mind was not on top form from the outset. But… the whole experience was pretty good. Just as well we were a little tipsy as the bill was quite high(probably the aperitifs). So the menu. Cool. a choice of approx 8 starters including oysters. Mains approx 8 – 10 to choose from and deserts 6 – 8 to choose from. I had some sort of posh duck pâté with slices of smoked duck, and a main of lamb. Dessert was the killer for me and I by far chose the best one which was little sponge blobs which you dip in warmed honey. There is a posh name but due to jet lag I cannot remember. Suffice to say I was having to share mine with everyone else. Wine menu was very cool. Not cheap but not toooooo pretentious and had some good choices and not going silly.

I know one does not usually associate food with Rodents and that also with the carrier of a plague that almost wiped out half the population if Western Europe. But don’t be fool hardy for this little restaurant is set in the Idealic town of Winchester. The restaurant is in an old pub and the owners have definitely kept the same feel with the rustic heavy wooden chairs and lovely warm lighting ! The food is lovely contemporary British cuisine, On my visit I began with a starter from the specials, which was the delicate zucchini flowers, which where lovely and lightly battered, these where especially good because they where not stuff with heavy cheese, it was served on the side and allow you to enjoy separately… this detail is because no body has gotten this dish right till now… and before i go on more about the food… i would advise you to just book a table and go enjoy the lovely food !
