For a spa which is located inside a decent, well established hotel(Amara), you would think the spa will be of a certain standard. First impression upon arrival, the place looks clean and calming. So far so good. The staff spoke in English, another good sign. I just feel that English should be the spoken language since it is the official business working language in Singapore. The toilet is located outside where it is shared, not what I expect of a proper hotel spa, but no matter. The treatment room is of a good size, not too tiny where there is barely any room to move around the massage bed. It also has a shower room attached which is good. Convenient for rinsing off the residue after a body scrub. Then the treatment started, and it all went downhill from there. Granted I was using a Groupon voucher($ 78 for a 2.5 hr massage, back scrub, wrap and facial), but I did not think it should be a factor. From the very beginning of the treatment, the therapist assigned to me kept badgering me to upgrade my treatment at an extra cost. The treatment started with the back scrub, so she asked me to top up $xx to get a full body scrub. I declined, and she persisted and changed tactics and said maybe I would like to do a tummy mask instead, to reduce my tummy. I should be insulted but I was not as I knew she was trying to upsell. I politely said no again. So she did the body scrub quickly and it segued into the wrap so rapidly that I did not even realize till later. She said to save time, she would do my facial while my body was in the wrap which was fine with me. Before the facial started, she again asked if I would like to top up a certain amount for ampoule or a better treatment. Again I said no. The facial was quite badly done. She was very rough and hard on the delicate facial skin that I felt like asking her to stop. I did not. Finally that was done and I had a shower before starting on the body massage. She asked if I would like to have an aromatherapy massage instead and that would need a top up of $xx. I said no and she kinda lost it and begged me to top up for something for her commission or something. That put me in a very difficult position. I already said no, and I did not want to back down due to it being a matter of principle for me now. Yet I felt guilty for not helping her in doing a top up. That was not a very pleasant feeling to have while you were supposed to have a relaxing time in a spa. Throughout the whole session, she was just sighing heavily(actually she was sighing for the entire treatment from the body scrub to the facial to the massage) and that was the last straw for me. Halfway through the massage, I told her to stop the session. She asked why. I did not want to tell her the reason but she kept asking why so I told her I could not stand her sighing so much throughout the entire 2 hours or so. I did not think she realized what I said as she was still puzzled. I did not blame the therapist but it was not a good experience. It made me wonder about the spa management. Did they pay their staff so little that they need to make money from pushing additional top ups of treatments to customers? The front desk staff did not ask me why I ended the treatment early nor did she ask if it was a good treatment. These were usually the questions asked at other spas as they would want to get feedback from customers. I requested to speak with the manager but was told the manager was not around and only gave me an email address after I asked for it. I felt it was not a very professional experience and was sorely disappointed. I hesitate to recommend this place to anyone else, especially if you are going there on a discount or promotional deal. Maybe the experience will be better for those who pay full price. But to me there should not be any difference in service level at all.
