Buchhandlung Hirslanden

‘I’ve eaten with John Irving.’ This certainly was one statement I did not think I’d hear this morning while running errands. Had I not taken the plunge and finally visited the groovy-​looking bookstore just a few blocks from my house, then I might not have ever heard anything at all about John Irving today or any other.
I was initially lured into the shop by the not too shabby selection of used books for sale along the front of the shop. From that offering, I picked up a compilation of short stories written in and around Zurich dating from about forty years ago for six franks.
Inside the shop I wasted no time in finding the children’s section as I have a bit of gift-​buying to do. I was only vaguely aware of the rest of the shop to my left. I did catch glimpses of wood flooring and shelving and books tidily arranged along the walls.
The kiddie section happened to be up at the front of the shop by the till. As I approached a friendly man greeted me and told me that if I should need any help, then not to hesitate to ask. I did ask and thus began a nice chat that wended its way through John Irving’s Vienna, bits of Schwabenland, Bern and some of the different slang terms for recreational drugs.
Overall it was a good experience. I shall return.

Heutzutage gehen ja die meisten Menschen ihre Bücher im Grossmarkt oder im Internet einkaufen. Hier gibt es die Bestseller zu Schleuderpreisen. Das Ganze funktioniert weitestgehend anonym –und nur weil ein Buch als Bestseller Firmiert, heisst es noch lange nicht, dass es literarisch wertvoll ist. Im Gegenteil: Es gibt viele Autoren, die mangels Solvenz, dem falschen Verlag oder einfach Pressescheuheit, nicht zum erwünschten Durchbruch gelangen. Dabei sind es gerade die «kleinen» Autoren, die mich regelmässig positiv überraschen. Gut, dass es Buchhandlungen wie die Buchhandlung Hirslanden von E.W.Reimann gibt, die sich neben einem fachmännischen Sortiment an Büchern, vor allem der Belletristik, also verschiedensten Formen der Unterhaltungsliteratur wie Romane und Erzählungen, auch der Kultur der Lesungen widmen. Diese Kultur ist meine Kultur und ich bin froh, wenn es engagierte Buchhandlungen wie diese gibt. Vor allem sind es bekannte Schriftsteller, die hier regelmässig lesen. Aber auch weniger bekannte Literaten bekommen hier eine Chance ihre Werke vorzustellen. Und damit unterscheidet sich die Buchhandlung Hirslanden nicht nur konzeptionell, sondern auch geistig von den geistlosen betriebswirtschaftlichen Geldmaschinen im Literatursegment. Megastöhn!
