Safari’s Record Shack

Lovely shop with a great selection and informative and helpful staff. I loved the diverse genre choice and the great amount of vinyl that filled such a tiny space! If you are looking for the shop it’s behind the flower shop in the William St lane.

This is the legitimately one of the coolest ideas for a vinyl store I’ve seen. Basically, you walk down a small arcade located on William Street between The Bird and the corner of James Street and you’ll see a small florist shop. Well, you walk behind that florist and there’s Safari’s Record Shack. The owner’s girlfriend is the one that owns the florist so there’s no confusion about why it’s there. No bigger than a mere 10 square metre unit, the range of vinyl they have is unbelievable for a place so small. Persuing through the vast selection of vinyls on offer delivered some interesting finds such as The Winston’s Amen Brother, of course the most quintessential vinyl ever as well as many fairly awesome classic hip-​hop albums like Nas’s Illmatic and Madvillian’s Madvilliany. Plus hundreds upon hundreds of other vinyl classics, all jammed together in a unit so small, it’s a wonder how you could even get two people to fit inside there at once. The owner is fairly good at ordering stuff in too so if there’s anything you fancy, he should be able to get it for you. If he’s not there, you can just talk to his girlfriend in the florist shop at the front if you wanna buy something and vice versa if she’s not in the florist shop, the two frequently look after both shops at once if the other needs to head somewhere (for example, Safari’s picking up new stock). If you’re interested in vinyl like I am and you’ve after something different from the stock standardness of 78’s or Dada, I recommend giving this place a shot. Hopefully, you can find it easy enough.
