Northside Books

I’ve bought quite a few books from this great little bookstore.
Being located in Northbridge means that the books on offer definitely are slightly skewed to the artsy side of things — a lot of fashion, architecture and design focused books, plus popular new fiction.
This is a great place to buy a gift for someone. The guy who runs the store gives really great honest advice. So ask for a recommendation for yourself if you can’t decide what you’re after.

Best coffee I have tasted so far in Perth, plus there are book.
Although not a real bookworm myself I did enjoy having a good browse whilst waiting for the coffee.
Both outside and inside seating can accommodate both sunny days and precipitation.
Very glad to have been shown the spot otherwise I don’t think I would have found this gem of a café in northbridge

Urbanistar, located at the rear of the New Edition bookshop on William Street in Northbridge is my new favourite sunny Winter morning coffee shop. Their paved terrace, bursting with reading materials, fake grass topped stools, separated from the street by a stand of potted olive trees, has me lapping up the sunny spot with long macchiato in hand, purring with pleasure.

I came in here on tuesday and received excellent service from the young guy who was working. There was a minor mix up with my order and the guy was super apologetic and more than made up for the mistake. This place deserves all the patronage it gets.

I’ll be honest, i’m not a big reader of books. I do most of my reading with a monitor. But its very refreshing to see the once hustle-​bustle-​drinky-​clubbing-​toxic Northbridge is now pulling back the reigns. New Edition hosts a wide variety of books to read and purchase along with some really good coffee.
If i went back in time to tell my 18 year old self that in the future you can actually sit on the corner of William and James with a coffee and a book, he would laugh at the thought — before throwing up that night’s poison…
We are now seeing two types of people coming to Northbridge at night, the 6pm crowd looking for good food, a place to relax, a place to meet other hip folk after work. And the 10pm crowd looking to blow steam and money at the clubs. And New Edition, with their great coffee and chai leaf tea are perfectly accommodating the former.

New Edition is a nice quiet book store amidst the bustling streets of Northbridge. Quite small, though they manage to pack their shelves high and thick with an eclectic range of all things fictitious and factual. Art, photography and design books litter most of the store, usually being hefty in weight (and price), which leaves the fiction section a little lacking, and as a fantasy/​sci-​fi fan, it kind of leaves the store a little lacking for me too.
Great place if you’re looking for design/​photography/​non fiction stuff though, albeit a little barely stocked.

It is rare that you find a bookshop that is more of an art installation– for sale at the right price. The feng-​shui is tangible with art deco bold boxed shelving staggered around the walls — the space is limited but maximised with 2 large shelve dividers.
Books are my weakness and as I revelled in the spoils this store had to offer– sporting some great material in the arts and cult classic departments, the guys working there casually chatted about literary history and occassionally commented on a book I gravitated towards– these guys know their stuff. I settled on a Banksy «wall and piece» trapped by my own belief– if a book makes you laugh, you are obligated to buy ir or at least borrow it) After my choice was made I then chatted with the staff only to discover that this little gem is relatively new (scuse the punn) — bags on order and has plans to expand– bringing coffee to the table soon!
It will be a trendy and envy evoking book club that snares this joint as their local hang out! Top spot– great service– timeless.

I’m not sure if there’s actually some battle between Fremantle and Northbridge to out-​cool the other. Both have an abundance of vintage stores, independent designers, tiny bars, bookstores, and a pack of eclectic locals strutting the streets with an air of nonchalance. When it comes to this book snob’s suburb of choice for some new reading material, I’d have to say Fremantle wins hands down. Case in point? New Edition. New Edition is one of Perth’s best suppliers of all sorts of printed matter. Whether you’re down for the best new popular fiction, an autobiography or want to learn how to cook raw vegan fare, New Edition will have you sorted.
They have two branches in Perth — one in Fremantle, the other in Northbridge. Northbridge’s store stays true to their promise of providing a diverse range of literature, but with roughly six shelves to peruse it’s just not as enjoyable to dilly-​dally in. The area is jam-​packed with brand new hard backs and paper backs, and is a little too tiny for my liking. To give them credit, the store’s incredibly organised and is simple to navigate. Maybe I’m just a little too comfortable in my Fremantle bubble, but Northbridge’s selection of books just doesn’t compare to Fremantle’s extensive catalogue. Now excuse me whilst I stay South of the River.

This teeny tiny little bookshop is small on space and large on charm. If you count squeaky wooden floorboards as charming. Which I do.
For such a tiny place is has a large range of quality books, including an impressive selection of literary fiction and writing titles.
It’s a little bit pricey, but you’ll still be able to find some good bargains if you look for them. And I definitely recommend visiting in the late afternoon after the lunch rush — such a tiny shop can get very crowded very quickly!

Despite being conspicuously small – approximately six shelves worth of books, give or take, crowding a single room – New Edition is a pretty impressive bookstore. Its selection is varied and littered not only with the books you would expect to come across, but also with curiosities. (I’m always impressed when I come across NYRB Classics in Australia bookstores, because I know they’ve gone to extra trouble to import these often lesser-​known titles.) The store has a solid line-​up of philosophy, history and current affairs books; the obligatory spattering of high-​end, large-​format cook books; and a large wall of literary fiction that is among the most impressive I have come across in the city.
Its prices are high-​ish, but then that’s Australian bookstores for you nowadays. It can get a little cramped inside, being as compact as it is, but some people find that sort of intimacy appealing. Check out the impressively complete section of Roberto Bolaño books.

New Edition is really well curated, and the team certainly know their stuff. The Northbridge store is compact, but the breadth of genres and titles is still mind-​blowingly impressive. Whenever I remember a book I want to read (it’s harder than it sounds!), I can be sure I’ll find it in this store. It has this uncanny knack for knowing what I want — and I’m sure what other people want too. That’s what I love about it. New Edition has its finger on the pulse, and the design of the shop is warm and comforting.
