Are you dying for some good pickles? Want some Belgian chocolate for that headache? Have you had a craving for pumpernickle for, like, years? If your idea of earthly delights sits within the Eastern European camp, then you needn’t think Sydney city doesn’t have the goods. Cyrils Deli is hidden away down in Haymarket, next to the tramline. Boris — who was working behind the counter when I went there yesterday — is really chatty, and quite a character. I don’t think he’s the owner, I think Cyril is the owner. Someone said something about Cyril being close mates with Neil Perry. It wouldn’t surprise me. Multiple languages flow through this deli: Polish, Czech, Russian, English, and Sausage. They have oozy cheeses, bulk offers on mustard, pickled everything, and German-packaged sweet things. Sydney’s downtown still has some small-businessness life to it yet!
