Chilai

In the words of one of my favorite television commercials in the US at the moment, «Nein, nein, nein, nein, nein, nein, nein!»
I realize it’s Europe and despite my presumption that Europeans are much more intelligent and appreciative of health concerns and cuisine, we were surprised to walk in from the attached mall directly to the smoking side. Yes, there’s an indoor smoking area that’s separated more ceremoniously by an automatic sliding door. Because of adjacent tables and their shifting patrons, servers moving about, and people coming in and out of the restaurant — the entire place is effectively a smoking establishment. Additionally, let’s say the door was somehow fixed so it didn’t open and you actually had separate entrances (which by the way appears to be how the restaurant was set up at one point), the kitchen is entirely in the smoking area which means your food is going to have a special something you just can’t put your finger on.
Do yourself a favor, find something else nearby. There are plenty of restaurants in Vienna, so unless you’re lazy, you have no excuse! :-)

Service was alright. The burger was delicious, but the rump steak was small, expensive and mediocre. Their cocktails are very good, but their beer selection is lackluster. The biggest problem was when paying the bill. Despite a signal at the door saying they took visa and MasterCard, the waiter said it was cash only. When we asked another and told him about the sign, the second waiter said they did take cards, and left. Once we told this to the first waiter, he said that yes, they took cards, but only above 45 Euro, a nice coincidence success our bill was 40.
Wouldn’t return.

This was the first place I ate on my trip to Vienna. Consistently fantastic food. But what stood out more was the amazing service. Our server made the trip better every time. He remembered what we wanted for drinks on our next visit; was funny, and did a fantastic job. I would definitely recommend Chilai to others.
