Mozarthaus Vienna mit Mozartwohnung

I didn’t enjoy this museum very much. 80% of the museum you are on a audio guide listening and standing in one place. It’s very small and doesn’t have enough visual display.

My sister and I were born to music teachers. My mother taught middle school band and my father was a high school marching band director. Our idea of rebellion? She and I would play string instruments. Watch out, we are some real badasses!
When my sister and I knew we were going to be in Vienna, the home of Mozart was a must! We and my husband took the metro to the Stephansplatz metro stop and took in all the majestic wonder that is the St. Stephan Cathedral. When we were there, scaffolding obscured just a bit of the masonry, but since they’re in the middle of restoring the stone and cleaning it, it’s easy to forgive. There was still plenty of the cathedral to wonder at.
We made our way around Domkirche St. Stephan and found Mozarthaus Vienna. The ticket price wasn’t too bad, and we were given audio headsets in English before heading up to the top floor.
No pictures are allowed, but that’s OK. Really, there’s not that much to take pictures of. Slight spoiler alerts from here on out, but you might want to read them if you’re not a die hard Mozart fan like me and my sister:
Mozart only lived in this residence for 2 years while in Vienna. That means there have literally been centuries upon centuries of other tenants who lived in these apartments, so the entire building has been whitewashed and essentially resembles a museum.
If you’re familiar with Mozart, you know he had debts upon death, so the remaining artifacts of his life are lost to us. This means that the museum studied his death estate and displayed some items that Mozart most likely would have had in this apartment, since it was the most magnificent of his residences. That means there are era chairs and clocks, but that’s about it.
The bulk of the tour centers around Mozart’s work while he lived at this residence. So there is a lot of background information on The Magic Flute and his Figaro work; the musicians and thought leaders he ran in social circles with, and his association with the Free Masons. It was definitely interesting, particularly the stage set design notes, Mozart’s own letters, the portraits of friends and family, and the history and political climate of Vienna. Also the rivalry between German operas and Italian operas was interesting to us as well.
Overall, it wasn’t what I was expecting. The utter lack of Mozart’s own possessions was a bummer, as was the entire white washed look to the premises. However, on that note, there was information as to how the apartment would have looked, and in order to get that feel, I highly suggest going to the Belvedere Museum and checking out the medieval exhibit on the first floor. One of the rooms there has a near identical preserved paint job to the area when Mozart lived in this residence, so the cross reference really helped open my eyes to the grandeur Mozarthaus looked like in it’s day.
As a music geek, this was worth it. My sister and I took away a lot of value and bought our Mother a mother’s day present from here (and then recorded a video at the Danube while humming it’s famous composed piece for a mother’s day surprise), and even my husband, who is more of a choral music nerd, found the Free Mason influences in The Magic Flute really interesting. But if you’re not a Mozart snob, you might not enjoy this. It’s not exactly visually stimulating, but there’s certainly a lot to read and listen to and understand the atmosphere of the times.

Omg! To think that Mozart lived here and I have touched the same walls that he did; I looked down the same courtyard that he did; through the same windows and onto the streets… I was so moved.
This tour is an audio guided one; and they provide headsets with different language options. This is an absolute must for any traveller!

This museum is a must see place when your in the beautiful city of Vienna. The city flourishes with the remnants and master pieces of Mozart.
I actually do not like classical music, it’s way to tranquil and sleep worthy. But I have to admit I enjoyed listening to Mozart’s compositions throughout my vacation. The apartment is gorgeous, although small but it portrays his instability in financial struggles. They have converted the entire building into a big museum not just his apartment. It’s cool to see this place because it’s the only surviving apartment from all the places he moved around in his life.
It amazes me that he did not get tremendous fame or recognition while he was alive but now he is considered the best composers of all time. The only negative feedback I will give this site is that you are not allowed to take photographs or videos, so I guess you will have to visit Vienna soon.~

Read as 3.51. We made a quick trip through here w/​our local guide from the Uniworld cruise. It was one of the apartments Mozart lived in, where he wrote «The Marriage of Figaro». We didn’t get much of a sense of his life or presence, as we did of the inhabitants and their lives in the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. There were 5 or 6 rooms w/​minimal furniture, although there were wall posters w/​information. The third floor is also open to the public, so there may have been interesting exhibits there that we didn’t see. There is a nice gift shop and there is a small café on the ground floor.

Eines der wenigen Museen die ich interessant finde und mich in den Räumlichkeiten gern aufgehalten habe.
Der Audioguide war gut gemacht. Viele Information auch über die Menschen um Mozart herum. Einfach toll.
Bei uns war das Museum nicht zu voll. Und das am 3. Advent.
Für jeden Mozart Liebhaber kann ich es nur empfehlen.

Was surprised that this museum seemed to be more devoted to Wolfgang’s father than Wolfgang himself. Still interesting nonetheless. If I could pick between the Mozart museums, I liked the Geburtshaus in Salzburg better.

Definitely make a stop here. Not knowing much about Mozart’s history, I completely fell in love with the Mozarthaus. The audio tours were great and it was fantastic being able to see an apartment that Mozart grew up in.
There’s a Mozarthaus that is much better out in Salzburg though.

It was an absolute honor to see a concert in not only one of the most acousitcally sound rooms in the world, but one that Mozart worked at.
The concert hall was small– as there were only about 25 seats, but it was tremendous! The artwork, instruments, and artists were all seamlessly perfect.
A must see for any fan of history or music!

I am NOT a fan of classical music. I don’t get it. But I love Mozart.
We went to a concert at the Mozarthaus. It was a small audience, with a string quartet performing. I don’t enjoy classical music, but I loved this.
The venue was very hard to find. Under an archway, down an alley, and with minimal signage. But we, along with a few dozen others, got there. It’s a perfect Vienna experience, to hear Mozart’s music in the same space he worked in.
Is it essential for a visit to Vienna? No. Is it enjoyable? Yes.

I suppose if you grow up in a time long before the invention of the Super Nintendo there isn’t much to do besides compose brilliant orchestral music at a very young age. That, and eat a retarded amount of marzipan filled chocolate balls.

Unweit des Stefansdoms in der Domgasse 5 befindet sich die einzige Wohnung Mozart in WIen, die bis heute heralten ist. Das Mozarthaus Vienna stellt auf vier Etagen in diesem Haus das Leben und Werk des Musikgenies aus. Zusätzlich zu der erhaltenen Wohnung, die wenig Überraschungen birgt, finden sich hier umfassende Präsentationen seiner wichtigsten Werke und auch an Zeitgeschichte wird nicht gespart.
Im Mittelpunkt stehen natürlich Mozarts Wiener Jahre, die auch gleichzeitig der Zenit in seinem Schaffen war. Ein Glück für das Museum.
Das etwas überteuerte Café und der Shop bieten alles, was der Mozartliebhaber gerne mit nach Hause nehmen möchte.
Leider finde ich, dass das ganze Konzept etwas oberflächlich geraten ist. Das ist allerdings nicht unbedingt überraschend, da es sich wohl auch vornehmlich an Touristen richtet, die nicht mit zuviel Detailwissen in ihrem Urlaub vollgestopft werden wollen. — Eine nicht ganz so touriste Alternative wäre das Schubert-​Geburtshaus in der Nussdorferstraße.

Okay — wenn jemand wirklicher Mozartliebhaber ist, dann sollte man schnell in dieses Häuschen gehen, das sich genau hinter dem Stephansdom befindet. Allerdings ist der Eintrittspreis für das, was man geboten kommt, ziemlich hoch. Doch Mozart zieht immer wieder Touristen an, die das gerne zahlen.
Falls man das Mozarthaus dennoch unbedingt sehen will, bietet sich dies im Zuge der langen Nacht der Museen an (jedes Jahr im Oktober) — da gibt’s ein Ticket für alle Mussen Wiens. Wer es Anfang Oktober nicht schafft, die LNdM zu besuchen, holt sich ein Kombiticket und kann um € 15,– das überaus sehenswerte Haus der Musik mit anschaun.

Lieber Besucher, bringe viel Zeit und Kraft mit! Am besten noch v o r jedem anderen Museumsbesuch kommen.
Es ist schon ein erhebendes Gefühl, die gleichen Räume zu durchschreiten, in denen unser Genie 3 Jahre lang (1784 – 87) wohnte und u. a. seinen Figaro komponierte. Insgesamt sind 4 Stockwerke zu besichtigen. Mozart lebte aber nur in einem; die anderen 3 Etagen sind der Ausstellung zusätzlich gewidmet.
Auf jeden Fall sollte man sich ein Audio-​guide gönnen, das ausführlichste Erklärungen zu den Exponaten (Original-​Partituren, Briefwechsel etc.) liefert. Man erfährt auf diese Weise zudem höchst interessante Intima über Mozart, von denen so mancher noch nie etwas gehört hat, die einem den Künstler jedoch noch liebenswerter erscheinen lassen. Am Eindrucksvollsten war ein wandbreites audiovisuelles Diorama, aus dem Auszüge aus der Zauberflöte erklangen. Auf die Veröffentlichung eines Fotos verzichte ich, da nicht sonderlich attraktiv.
Der Museums-​Shop läßt keinen Wunsch offen.
