Vapiano

Endlich habe ich auch Vapiano ausprobiert. Bis ich ein Tisch bekommen habe musste ich ca. 10 Minuten warten, was überhaupt nicht schlimm ist für ein solches Restaurant im 1. Bezirk. Die Ambiente sind mir sofort gefallen. Hab ganz klassisch eine Pizza bestellt was ca. 15 Minuten gedauert hat bis sie am Tisch war. Sie war sehr, sehr gut (für mich ist es immer bisschen schwieriger eine gute Pizza zu finden wegen meinen längeren Italien Aufenthalt: D). Werd bestimmt wieder hingehen :)

Total lustlose Köche. Genau wie in jedem anderen Vapiano. Das Essen ist trotzdem sehr gut.

I was so happy to see that Vienna has several Vapiano locations! There’s one right by my company’s office in Washington, DC and after 3 weeks of central European fare — while yummy — was ready for a culinary change of pace and delighted to find a familiar spot.
We ate at 2 different Vapiano locations in Vienna and both were very nice. I personally preferred the one at Walfischgasse 11 (near the Opera house) because of the layout — cozier, more unusual for a Vapiano.
As always, the food was excellent, a great deal for the money and everyone spoke English so if you aren’t a local, no worries when it comes to ordering. At lunch time, the wait at the pasta counters can take a few minutes, as everything is made to order, so if you can get in before the 1pm lunch rush, you’ll have a shorter wait usually.
You really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, especially as you can customize so much of each dish, if desired.
Reliable spot for good food and wine at a very good price — relaxed place to grab lunch or dinner.

Anfangs war ich ein Fan vom Vapiano, frische Kräuter am Tisch, modernes Ambiente, garantiert frisch zubereitetes Essen, das alles gefiel mir sehr. Mittlerweile,
nach zig Besuchen muss ich sagen, es gibt so viele entspanntere, spannendere und freundlichere Lokale im 1. Bezirk. Ich komme nur noch spät abends, wenn man sonst kaum mehr wo etwas zu essen bekommt. Warum: für einen Selbstbedienungsladen ist es einfach zu teuer, die Pasta und Suppen sind recht fettig, der Geräuschpegel ist fast unerträglich. Pfannen und Besteck werden rumgeschmissen
vom Personal, das man sich fast die Ohren zuhalten muss und man kann nie in Ruhe essen. Vom früh bis spät ist mir hier zu viel los. Und schnell gehts leider auch nicht.

Der Paradeishof beim Kastner&Öhler hat Konkurrenz bekommen und ähnlich wie dort sitzt man an eher ungemütlichen Tischen und muß sich brav zum Essen anstellen. Hier wird Kantinenatmosphäre versprüht.Die Qualität der Speisen ist annehmbar und das Service mittelprächtig

Für ein Pastagericht immer empfehlenswert — wenn auch ab und zu mit langer Wartezeit. Super große Portionen und durch die gemeinsamen großen Tisch recht kommunikativ. Mein Tipp: ab und zu kommt ein netter Kellner vorbei und fragt nach den Wünschen — bei dem kann man dann Kaffee bestellen. Phantastisch!

I really like the Vapiano concept! And, from my experiences in Vienna so far, finding a good pasta dish is a bit of a challenge. This location has not disappointed, and has delivered delicious pasta every time. A very bright spot, and great on a sunny weekend afternoon.

One of the better locations in the city, but not world. I had better in Stockholm where I first stumbled on this chain. Surprisingly they have better pasta than most other Italian restaurants. Not pizza, but pasta. It is tough to find good pasta dishes in this city! Desserts is where this chain fails. And pizza. But come for the pasta! Always a winner!

I generally refrain from reviewing chain restaurants, especially like Vapiano — a German owned Italian eatery. That said, Vapiano is an exception rather than a rule. Depending on what you eat there, their food is between 3 and 4 stars on the Unilocal scale.
As a Vapiano regular (speaks volumes about Vienna’s Italian restaurant scene, when Vapiano (s) offer some of the best and the freshest Italian cooking in town), here are the highlights:
— Pasta — although inconsistent, if your pasta dish is prepared by a properly trained (and somewhat talented) cook, you will get a solid 4 star pasta dish. The pasta is made fresh daily and it makes all the difference in the world. As said, if executed properly — and all Vapiano restaurants are highly inconsistent — you will get a good bowl of pasta. Unfortunately, more often then not, you will observe as a cook ruins your dish by either overcooking the pasta or burning the hell out your bolognese sauce, or adding the butter too early at a high heat and instead emulsifying the sauce, just making it greasy and nasty. I could go on, but to solve that problem pay attention how your pasta dish is being prepared and intervene — tell them not to start cooking pasta at the same time they start cooking the sauce (unless you like an overcooked mush); tell them to lower the heat, add more parmesan, add or refrain from adding an ingredient or two. Most of the time they will comply and you will get a great meal at a very reasonable price.
— Pizza — 2.5 stars. If you are an adult, don’t eat pizzas there — for kids, it’s fine. The dough is not good, it comes out too dry and cardboardy.
— Desserts — generally 3 stars. Some are better than others and in good Vapiano tradition — inconsistent.
Coffees are good too. Service is also very inconsistent — mostly 3 stars.

My friends and I went here once a week once we discovered it. Cheap, quick, customizable, delicious. Ask for fresh bread (free) and fresh basil on top. Ratatouille and eggplant dish are my favorites.

Ich bin sehr von der Pizza angetan und das Ambiente ist auch sehr modern! Bin seht oft mit meiner Freundin dort gewesen und wir wurden wirkl nie enttäuscht! Einzig und allein die Philosophie mit dem Zusammensitzen könnte mMn besser gelöst werden.

It was a great place in the beginning when it first came out in Vienna and eventually spread all over Vienna. For the price you pay not really worth… you are actually just eating the pizza like from another pizzeria on in a fancy place with high stools supposed to make it casual. If you are luck the cook is good then the food is taste, if he’s in haste or new then its like half cooked. I had one who kept reading the instructions set … the food was finally done but not so tasty … it lacked… something.
Drinks are very expensive and Italian water… why don’t we have water in Austria? supposed to make it look cool for imported water where they can charge you exorbitant prices i suppose.

Stopped by this place by chance, wasn’t disappointed! Would definitely recommend, casual and classy.

Ich bin kein grosser Anhänger vom Slogan «Früher war es besser.»
In diesem Fall stimmt es aber.

Ich finde einfach, dass es zuwenig Auswahl resp. Abwechslung gibt und die Preise für die Salate sind wirklich mies.
Vom Konzept her aber einer der besseren Kette und designtechnisch auch sehr schön und sauber.

Bei Vapiano scheiden sich die Geister: die einen lieben es, die anderen verachten es. Ich liebe es: frisch vor einem zubereitet, gute Qualität und das Ambiente spricht mich auch sehr an. Vor allem gefallen mir die massiven Tische mit den Ölen, Essigessenzen und Kräutern in Töpfen, die man sich abzupfen kann um etwas zu würzen.
Zu empfehlen ist das Carpaccio, das für die gebotene Qualität relativ günstig ist. Die Pastagerichte waren bis jetzt allesamt sehr gut. Die Salate sind top.
Die Filiale in der Herrengasse war bei meinem Besuch gerammelt voll.

But the food is really good, truly tastes like a real Italian restaurant and is cooked right in front of you according to YOUR preferences. It will fulfill your every wish!
The concept is interesting: They have several counters, one for each Italian specialty: Pasta, Salad and Pizzas, and also have one spot for starters, desserts and drinks.
You get a card at the entrance that you charge at one of the counters (depending on what you are having). You make your choice among the appetizing dishes of the menu, can customise it (sauces, added ingredients (€), herbs…), and then admire the chef cook it for you!
If you are having one of their delicious pizza (the crust is just per-​fect!), you get a bipper that you take with you at your table. A few minutes later it will bip and you can go back to the counter to get your freshly baked pizza!
All in all, a quick and tasty meal for a reasonable price. As for the ambiance, I like the modern decoration and its high wood tables and seats. In Summer you can also sit outside in a quiet area.
So yes, Vapiano is a channel of Italian restaurants. Luckily for us: there are several of them in the City! :)

Nun — ich war ja schon im Vapiano am Westbahnhof und war, sagen wir mal, allerhöchstens suboptimal begeistert! Doch eine «gute Bekannte» war der festen Überzeugung, ich hätte nur mal wieder miese Laune gehabt und auch einen schlechten Tag des Restaurants erwischt. Nicht wirklich überzeugt — aber doch tapfer lächelnd (was erträgt man als Mann nicht alles für ein klein wenig After-​Dinner-​Entertainment) — lenkte ich also am Arm der Dame, meine Schritte in dieses Etablissement.
Eigentlich wollte ich schreiend wieder fliehen, als mir beim Eintritt dieses heissgeliebte Kärtchen überreicht wurde, auf dem ich meine Konsumationen aufbuchen könne. DAS habe ich bereits mit 16 Jahren in der Grossraumdisco gehasst und hasse es heute noch mehr! Das Argument, dass es aber so für das Service und den Ablauf viel einfacher ist, interessiert mich genau: Null! Wäre das ein valides Argument, so könnte man dem Gast ja auch beim Eingang per Hochfrequenzlaser einen QR-​Code auf die Stirn tätowieren! (Hoffentlich liest das Vapiano-​Management hier nicht mit, sonst machen die das noch!)
Oooommmmmm! Das war meine Devise für den Rest des Besuchs. Mit der inneren Ruhe eines tibetanischen Schweigemönchs liess ich also alle Rituale in diesem «Restaurant» über mich ergehen. Oder richtiger: partizipierte schweigend an den gastronomischen Verbrechen. Denn das Ende des Abends war wichtiger!
Man nenne mich altmodisch, man nenne mich konservativ, man nenne mich verbohrt — aber ich finde trotz intensivstem Nachdenken keinen einzigen Grund, warum ich das System «Vapiano» gut finden soll. Ja — das Essen ist wirklich nicht schlecht aber auch — ja — die verlangen hier schon sehr stolze Preise für eine Pizza oder Pasta. Und genau DAS ist der «Casus Knaxus»: ich kenne alleine in Wien ca. 317 kleine italienische Restaurants, die mir das Essen in mindestens gleicher Qualität, zum gleichen Preis oder sogar billiger AN DEN TISCH BRINGEN!!!
Ich will mich nicht anstellen, um mein Essen zu bekommen! Das habe ich früher in der Mensa gemacht weil’s billig war! Jetzt kann ich es mir leisten, mich hinzusetzen — jemand nimmt meine Bestellung auf — und jemand bringt mir das, was ich bestellt habe. Auch dieses Pseudo-​So kann ich dem Koch aber sagen wie ich mein Essen genau haben will, ist doch nur Firlefanz. In einem guten Restaurant kann ich auch beim Kellner sagen ob ich mehr Salz, Oregano, Thymian oder Fusspilz haben will.
Unter Uns: Innerlich ziehe ich ja meinen Hut und verbeuge mich gaaaanz tief vor den Marketing-​Leuten des Vapiano. Man muss schon sehr, sehr gut sein, um der Masse glaubhaft zu machen, dass es von Vorteil für sie ist, wenn man einen essentiellen Punkt eines Rsetaurants — das Service — auf ein Minimum reduziert. Und noch ein «Chapeau» obendrauf: denn dem Gast echt einzureden, dafür, dass er das Essen selber beim Koch bestellen und es selber zum Tisch bringen darf, muss man einen kleinen Aufpreis bezahlen — nun, das ist allerhöchste Marketingkunst!
Sei es wie es sei: Im Endeffekt hat an diesem Abend alles gut geendet! Jedoch nicht, WEIL wir im Vapiano waren, sondern OBWOHL wir dort waren. Und ich — garantiert — zum letzten Mal…

Vapiano is one of my favourite discoveries whilst living in Vienna. There are a few dotted around Vienna and I have good experiences in the ones I have visited. I really like the concept and the food is fantastic. Once you receive your card at the door, make your way to one of the counters… pizza, pasta, starters and desserts, take a look at the menu and order your food. The chef will cook it in front of you, customising your chosen dish to your flavour preferences, complete with fresh herbs that are picked from the plants before your eyes. Scan your card over the machine at each counter to tot up everything you’ve spent and pay for it at the front desk on your way out.
The restaurant itself has a nice atmosphere and you will find oils and fresh herbs on your table for you to pick and add to your food. The chefs are extremely friendly and professional as well as the other staff. Menus are provided in German and English as standard. The food is very well priced and tastes so good!

Eines meiner liebsten «in der Pause mal schnell was essen gehen”-Lokale im ersten Bezirk.
Was Vapiano bietet, wurde bereits ausführlich in anderen Reviews erwähnt: preislich attraktives, qualitativ hochwertiges italienisches Essen in mehr oder weniger ausgefallenen Kreationen.
Das Lokal in der Herrengasse besticht nicht nur durch seine zentrale Lage, sondern auch durch die gemütliche Einrichtung und optimale Platznutzung. Der Service ist schnell und freundlich, nur zu Stoßzeiten kann es schwierig werden, einen Platz zu bekommen.

Wir waren hier einige Male essen und fanden es immer sehr gut.
Hat natürlich ein anderes Flair, da es Selbstbedienung ist. Aber: das Essen schmeckt.

I see that this is a chain that has multiple location so I hope it is the correct one that I am reviewing. In any event, if they are all similar, the review should be good.
We were walking around looking for a restaurant for dinner using the Unilocal App and Monicle. As we looked for another restaurant, which turned out to be closed, across the street was Vapiano. We were not looking for Italian as our first dinner in Vienna but decided to go in.
It turns out that you take a tray, utensils, etc and a menu and order your food at a counter. Choices included pastas, antipasti, salads, pizzas and more. All are prepared to order for you. You sit anywhere there is an open seat. Don’t fear the tray or seating. It was great! The food quality was excellent, service at the counters was excellent and the atmosphere was relaxed and really nice. Nice lighting at the tables and small pots of fresh herbs adorn the table.
I went with an antipasti dish called Vitello Tonnato which was roasted veal slices (basically roast beef slices) served around an arugula salad and topped with a cream of tuna sauce and capers. Surprisingly excellent combination.
Then a calzone from the pizza menu. Not a calzone as I (a New Yorker) think of a calzone. It was more like a half round (folded over) stuffed pizza filled with mushrooms, ham, pepperoni, tomato sauce and cheese. No riccotta cheese. Very good!
So, if you desire good Italian food in a non-​stuffy environment, try Vapiano.

In der Herrengasse liegt das Vapiano ein Selbstbedienungsrestaurant. Es gibt hier verschiedene Pastagerichte und Pizza.
Gleich beim Eingang bekommt man eine Karte und man stellt sich an, hier kann man dann schön auswählen von einer Speisekarte was man essen will dann sagt man das dem Koch und der bereitet es zu, das ganze geht recht schnell von statten.
Es gibt verschiedene Pasta Gerichte und auch verschiedene Nudeln die Köche sind sehr freundlich und fragen auch nach wie Sie es zubereiten sollen, ob Parmesan drauf soll oder Knoblauch ob Chilli rein soll …
Die Sitzgelegenheit ist für ein Selbstbedienungsrestaurant ok, könnte bessere sein.
Nach dem Speisen bezahlt man an der Kasse gespeichert ist alles auf der Karte was man gehabt hat.

This place is a huge hit — especially among people with families. I don’t get what is so appealing about this place, but it’s worth it if you happen to be next to one and need to feed a family NOW.
Here’s the deal: you get a card when you arrive. You then have to visit several stations and select what you want from them: pasta, pizza, salads, drinks, desserts. This is far from convenient, and can take a long time if four people want four different things. Finally, one would think that, for doing all the work, the prices would be slightly cheaper. They aren’t.
The quality is okay. Not to say that the ingredients aren’t fresh and the preparation isn’t on-​demand. There’s just no soul and no depth to the food. The pizzas are of the quality that one would be slightly disappointed in if one were in Italy — dough is flavorless, and a bit «cake-​ey» and clearly shows a lack of understanding about what makes a great pizza. The pasta, while freshly-​made, is pared with middling sauces in most cases. The salads can be good, though.
Service can be good to bad. Last time I was there, the pasta cook was so thoroughly uninterested that he burned the garlic twice. The first time, he tried to pass it off and make my dish anyway, but I refused to let him. The second time, I had to alert him that the garlic was burnt, and he rolled his eyes and tossed the pan halfway across the kitchen in anger. Sorry, dude, I know it was important that you check those SMS-​es. The time before that, I took my children to the restroom and, while we were in there, the server took our unfinished food away and tossed it in the trash. I had to argue with the manager to get my money back, but she relented and, eventually, was actually quite nice about it.
Finally, for a family-​friendly place, some of the locations only have bar stools at the tables. Have you ever tried to eat with a two or three year old in a bar stool? Let’s just say that injuries and a trip to the hospital might be in order if you’re not careful.
What I really like about this place, though, is the continuous kitchen from opening to close. As a person with young children, I find it pleasantly convenient when restaurants avoid shuttering between lunch and dinner so that people can feed their shouting, annoying children during the lull time and be out of the restaurant’s hair for the main service ;-)

Wer fast food möchte und dennoch wert auf ein schönes Ambiente und frische Zubereitung legt ist hier richtig. Man kann hier zu guten preisen frische Pasta nach Wunsch bekommen und sie werden vor deren Augen frisch zubereitet. Besser geht es in diesen Segment nicht.
Extra Stern für einen Wickelraum.
Negativ ist am Wochenende die gehobene Lautstärke.
Personal ist freundlich.

Super Lage mitten in der Stadt und bei der U-​Bahn Station Herrengasse. Herorragende Pasta und coole Lokalidee. Zwar nicht das billigste, aber für die Umgebung im Rahmen.
Das Essen ist auch zum Mitnehmen geeignet

Auch das Vapiano bietet eine gute Gelegenheit in der Freyungumgebung seine Mittagspause zu verbringen.
Zur Mittagszeit muss man zwar öfters mehr Zeit einplanen, da sich längere Schlangen bilden, aber dafür wird man dann mit tollen und auch einigen außergewöhnlichen Pastavariationen belohnt. Ich finde gut, dass man zwischen zirka 8 verschiedenen Nudelvarianten neben den üblichen Fussili, Gnocchi. auch für Compagnelle oder Dinkelfussili wählen kann. Außerdem finde ich gut, dass man beim Zubereiten direkt zusehen kann und auch noch die Wahl hat zusätzlich Knoblauch oder Chili zum Sugo dazuzugeben. Auch das Konzept mit der Karte wo man dann erst am Schluss bezahlen muss ist eine gute Idee. Um das Warten auf die Pizza zu reduzieren, gibt es auch eine gute Lösung. Man bekommt eine Art Piepser in die Hand und kann bereits sich einen Platz auswählen, wenn dan die Pizzza bei der Theke abholbereit ist beginnt es zu vibrieren und schon kann man seine Pizza abholen und genießen.
Man fühlt sich hier auch wohler, wenn man alleine die Mittagspause verbringt, als in manch anderen Lokalen, da die großen kommunikativen Tische, einem nicht das Gefühl geben, dass man alleine ist und so kommt man auch schneller ins Gespräch oder kann interessante Gespräche belauschen.

Popular Italian restaurant in Vienna. It has a modern, cool concept offering vibrant colors, herbs and oils on the table, generous seating, and a DIY food pick up style. A little pricier. Personally I prefer real sit down restaurants in Vienna, but that doesn’t stop Vapiano’s general popularity and patronage

Das klassische Franchisekonzept alla Vapiano. Die Inneneinrichtung entspricht allen anderen lokalen, sehr modern. Die Angestellten arbeiten zur Mittagszeit auf Hochtouren, trotzdem kommt was zu langen Wartezeiten. Sehr hektische Atmosphäre. Das Essen war optisch gut, konnte geschmacklich aber nicht ganz überzeugen.

Interessante Art Essen zu gehen, tolles Lokal, Super Atmosphäre.
Kann ich nur empfehlen es mal zu probieren.

Vapiano is great for a quick and fresh meal. We were staying at the Herrenhof next door and walked past Vapiano everyday of our stay. Each time we walked by it was busy inside and out.
The concept was new for me. As soon as you walk in you get a «credit card» and when you order something you swipe it with the chef. They give you your food and you find your own seat. Eat the delicious food. Then head to the register and pay. It’s a really easy process for paying.
I had a caprese salad and pizza. They pick the basil from potted plants and the mozzarella is really fresh. I was happy with both choices I made.

The food is great but there certainly is better pizza available in Vienna. Vapiano is not a charming restaurant but they will get you fed fast, and for a reasonable price.

Die gewohnte Vapiano-​Qualität gibt’s auch in Wien. Wie bei allen Restaurants dieser Kette muss man je nach Tageszeit schon etwas Geduld aufbringen bis man sein Gericht hat. Also am besten bringt man nicht nur Appetit auf Pasta oder Pizza mit sondern auch ausreichend Zeit. Das Essen ist lecker. Die Kaffeecke fällt im Vergleich zu anderen Vapianos leider etwas zu klein aus. Dafür kann man jedoch bei entsprechenden Außentemperaturen auch draußen essen.

Vapiano in Wien… kennen wir schon aus Nürnberg. Frisch, super Geschmack, zügig, Preis Leistung stimmt
Es ist kein gemütlicher Italiener, das erwarte ich aber bei Systemgastronomie auch nicht. Wir waren Top zufrieden!

Yes, Vapiano is a restaurant chain. But don’t let that keep you from visiting. The best food I had in Vienna was served at Vapiano.
You want fresh? The food is so fresh that the cooks pluck herbs right off the plants to add to your food as you watch.
Great pizzas (the quattro formaggi with sun-​dried tomatoes is probably my favorite), decent pasta dishes, tasty desserts (especially the panna cotta with strawberry sauce) — all at wallet-​friendly prices.
The branch on Herrengasse is particularly conveniently located — as soon as you exit the metro, the restaurant is right there.
I hope someone opens a Vapiano branch in my neck of the woods soon.

Das erste Mal, im Vapiano:
Gewohnheitssüchtig, wie ich aufgewachsen war, marschierte ich in Richtung Pizzen… Die Augen der Wissenden, schienen meine unwissenden erfasst zu haben. Höchste Alarmbereitschaft! Meine Bestellung erforderte eine Karte. Die Karte gehörte gescannt! Das Scannen war erfolgslos — wiederholen! Ich schrie mit letzter Kraft «Funghi-​Pizza, mit Paprika!». Er starrte mich an… Die Spannung stieg. Ein anderer Mann sprang aus der Deckung, hinter der Theke und gab in letzter Sekunde den Code ein — Die Pizza war bestellt!
Man drückte mir einen Taser in die Hand und blickte schon zum nächsten Kunden. Ich solle wieder kommen, wenn das Gerät anspringt, erklärte er mir. Dann erfolge die Übergabe… Ich müsse der Pizza würdig werden.
Dem Schlachtfeld entlaufen, schossen, zu meiner Rechten, die Grenadiere mit Schmatz– und Klirrgeräuschen — Zu meiner Linken, heulte ein explosives Baby. Ich war umzingelt, und der Ausgang war nahe. Ein Wächter — eigentlich Kassierer — wollte meine Karte. Das Ausreisen koste Geld… Hechelnd, ließ ich ihm den gewünschten Betrag da, als ich floh!
Mit weiten Augen, musterte ich meine Umgebung… Die Gefahr war nah. Sogar das Urwaldgebüsch (die Sonnenschirme?), schienen einige Feinde zu beherbergen. Schockierend, im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes, entlud sich der geliehene Taser und verpasste dem KGB-​Agenten (eigentlich Esstisch) einen elektrischen Schlag. Die verborgene Bedrohung war vorüber! Die Italiener waren verbündete… Wie blind ich war!
In höchster Eile, lief ich zu ihnen… Einerseits, um meine Dankbarkeit zu zeigen, aber auch etwaige Befehle anzunehmen. Angekommen, erfuhr ich von dem Agenten, der nicht aufgespürt werden sollte! Wenn die KGB merkte, dass er außer Gefecht war, dann könnte ich nie wieder ausreisen! Ausgesperrt, aus der Freiheit! (Mein Platz war nicht mehr reserviert).
Ich vergaß, mich zu bedanken… Sogar die Pizza zu pfeffern! Nicht einmal Oregano! Ich lief so schnell ich konnte. Der Agent war noch da — Er atmete nicht mehr. Man hatte ihn nicht gefunden!
Ich blinzelte einmal, und wachte auch… All der Krieg, im Traum, verwandelte sich zu einem Kettenrestaurant, mit hochkomplexem Selbstbedienungssystem. Es ward Frieden!
