I want to say 2 star but unfortunately have been sick for 2 days since eating there. Aside from that I want to give my fair review. The food was presentable and tasted normal not worth the high price. The service was sub par as in we weren’t attended to often enough. The waiter visited our table 3 times to take order and give food and give check.

If you are looking for average, over-priced sushi then this is your place. Nothing about this place was impressive. We ordered spring rolls, the rainbow roll, and the spider roll. For starters the spring rolls tasted like they came straight from the freezer. And for the price, I would have expected to get more than 4. Moving onto the rolls, another disappointment. Firstly, they were cut way to thick. Secondly, the flavour would have benefited if they had used fresher ingredients. Everything about them was just blah, especially the rainbow roll. For the quality of rolls, the price was for too steep. The only redeeming aspect from Oranj would be the attentive service. Overall, there’s better sushi in the city, so I wouldn’t go out of your way to come here.

This place is easy to find along Bourbon Street inside West Edmonton Mall. My friend and I were seated pretty quickly with no reservations. We arrived at the restaurant around 5:30pm, on a Friday. They have a pretty wide selection of sushi to choose from. I love how the menu includes pictures so you have an idea of what the food looks like. My friend and I ordered: Sushi pizza(salmon), sushi sandwich(salmon), sushi cake(salmon), prawn tempura(6 pieces) and tempura ice cream(mango). We are major raw salmon sashimi fans and this was definitely reflected in our selections. The prawn tempura came out first. The tempura was crispy and temperature was nice and hot. Next came the sushi sandwich — definitely shareable. There were 6 giant triangle pieces — altogether almost the size of 3 normal sandwiches. My friend opted to not have the Oranj sauce(not too spicy mayo) on this. It still tasted okay but was drier minus the sauce and thus a tad harder to eat. I dunked it in soy sauce to compensate. It had rice and nori(for the bread) and salmon, avocado and purple onion inside. The sushi cake arrived next. It came in 8 rectangular shaped sushi pieces. Also very shareable. Easy to eat because of the Oranj sauce was drenched on top. This too had salmon and avocado layered between. I really liked this! The sushi pizza had a ½ inch thick rice patty that was kinda breaded and fried. The«pizza» was topped with avocado, fresh tomatoes and salmon. The taste was just okay. This was supposed to come with Oranj sauce but my friend opted to not have this. Personally, I think the sauce makes a difference in terms of making things taste better and easier to swallow. Finally, the tempura on the tempura ice cream kinda fell off the mango ice cream but I still found it pretty tasty! The tempura part kind of tasted like yellow cake. An cute touch was the 2 strawberry Pocky sticks(Asian crackers shaped like sticks and dipped in different flavors). An interesting and slightly weird thing about this place is the washroom. You walk out through the back of the restaurant and partially into another restaurant! The washroom is technically in another restaurant! Overall, I’d consider coming back here to try the other items on the menu. The prices are a bit expensive but the portions are pretty generous. Our bill ended up coming to $ 71.40 and we didn’t even order any drinks — just water. It’s not the best sushi in the world but it’s also not the worst either. The service was okay. The waitresses were somewhat attentive but at times difficult to get in contact with. It’s not a very big restaurant. There were 2 waitresses and 1 hostess. If I’m in the mall, I MIGHT give it a try if I’m in the mood for some quick Japanese food. But I wouldn’t come in here with super high expectations.

Average. They were out of toro. It was a Thursday. Very friendly staff tho and the maki was good. Good in a pinch.

Food: Terrible. We ordered the sashimi combo and the pieces were smaller than the size of a pinky. Everything is overpriced and when the sushi is falling apart you know there’s something wrong here. Not surprisingly, the soup were served in small, cheap portions and the greens in our bentos were less that a forkful. Service: Very friendly and helpful. A couple beside us broke a glass and they cleaned it up with smiles on their faces. Good for them! Atmosphere: Professional, high class setting with casual shoppers coming in and out since it’s the WEM we are speaking of! Overall: Never coming here again.

The sushi here is really well made but way too overpriced. Good service overall but there are much better and cheaper sushi restaurants in the city.(Mikado is amazing)

This restaurant is awful and the prices to match it are dreadful. Don’t be fooled, because the restaurant looks beautiful from the outside. Unfortunately the sushi is not up to par with other places such as Mikado and Kobe.

Even setting foot into the place was a mistake. My partner and I needed a quick dinner before a soccer game so we popped over to WEM in search of something healthy and tasty. We’re both suckers for sushi so when we came across Oranj we decided to give it a try. There was no wait for a table, which coincided with our need to be quick. After being seated, we were left for some time without a server. When she finally arrived she asked if we were ready to order, which we were not, as we were trying to figure out a way to have a good meal without breaking the bank. She took our drink orders and we continued our debate. Everything on the menu was incredibly expensive. In the end we went with one vegetarian bento box and one sushi bento box, which we planned to share. We had wanted to do individual rolls for variety, but they were just too expensive to justify it. When our food arrived, I noticed right away that the quality of my fish was sub par. The shrimp smelled off, the salmon was rubbery, and it appeared that nothing was fresh. Also, the teriyaki chicken was disgusting. It was deep fried and crunchy and the sauce was about 9 parts salty soy. The only things I appreciated about my box was the tempura and rice. I was understandably upset that I dropped $ 24.00 on such a mess. My partners food was better, but not by much. Fortunately for her, freshness was less of an issue because it was a vegetarian box. Though, the only part of the veggie sushi that was edible was the small cucumber maki. She was thoroughly disappointed by the quality of the food. To cap it all off, our server did very little. She didn’t refill drinks, she only checked on our food when we were almost finished, and disappeared for 10 minutes after clearing our plates. Which, was unacceptable. Oranj is way bellow par for both food and service. It also one of the most expensive places I’ve been to for sushi. I’d steer clear if I was you.

High traffic mall location = high rent = high prices = low value = mediocre food quality. Need I say more?!

I’m glad I didn’t give this place that 5 star I was planning the first time I went there. It loses a star with each visit. The first time me and my friend went for lunch at Oranj, we were blown away with the freshness. We ordered sashimi and tataki. I’d never had tataki before, and I was like, «Where have you been all my life?!» Fantastic! Unfortunately, I ordered the Chirashi the second time. I do NOT recommend it. It’s boring and incomplete. It had a mediocre and stingy selection of fish, and glob of seaweed salad, and an ugly glob of pickled ginger. The toppings didn’t even cover the rice. I felt ripped off. They obviously cheaped out Today we had tuna tataki, spring rolls, and an assorted sashimi appetizer. I really liked the tuna tataki, with it’s lightly seared tuna, ponzu sauce, purple onions and seaweed. My assorted sashimi appetizer, at just two dollars less,(11.50) was a measly 6 pieces of fish. 2 salmon, 2 tuna, and 2 tough pieces of white fish. If you look at my photo, it’s the underwhelming little dish in the foreground. I asked my husband what he thought of the spring rolls, and while he snarled over the grease and lack of meat, he was able to sum it up in one word for this review. «Unremarkable.» I can think of three Japanese restaurants off the top of my head in the west end that are better. I think we’re done here. Unless I want tataki. Then I’ll return.

This is the only place to grab sushi in West Ed(unless you count Tokyo Express), so I’ve come here a couple of times due to lack of choice. I have never been blown away by their sushi. It’s just mediocre and for the precise some of their rolls are, I expect much better than just meh-worthy food. I ordered the rainbow roll and there was so much mayo in the crab mixture. It was repulsive. Had I wanted to eat a spoonful of mayo per bite I would’ve stopped off at a grocery store and bought a tub for $ 7, instead of paying over double that price for«sushi». The fish itself was alright, though the slices were small for the price. The restaurant was in an okay state of cleanliness. There was something weird and repulsive looking on the bottom of my water glass. It looked vaguely like tofu? I tried to get my glass changed but the waitress disappeared, which is quite the feat in a restaurant that small. I came out of Oranj smelling like a deep fat fryer. I love me some tempura but I don’t want to smell like it, especially in the 30C weather. After I got home, I felt nauseous for a bit… Is overdosing on mayo possible?

Went here on our first date! Food was fresh, clean and delicious. Wish it was a little less pricey but we loved the ambiance and our shared sushi!

not bad good food but not really worth the price and how small the place actually is. though its on bourbon street in WEM it usually does not have a huge line. their bento is the best though.

A girlfriend and I decided to fuel ourselves with lunch before our shopping marathon. As we walked down Bourbon Street, debating which restaurant to try, Oranj Sushi caught my eye and we decided to head in. The ladies at the table beside us had some really delicious looking rolls, so when our waitress came by we had to ask what they were having. We settled on the Agedashi tofu, crispy scallops and salmon sushi cake. All the dishes were super tasty — the crispy scallops were battered and deep fried and the salmon sushi cake was something I’ve never had before. It had crispy rice, a special Oranj sauce and salmon pressed together so it was in rectangular pieces. The pieces were a bit hard to handle, they kind of fell apart when you picked them up but tasted delicious nonetheless.

If you have to eat in the mall… why not? Oranj is good for what it is: a small sushi restaurant on boisterous Bourbon Street in West Edmonton Mall. Our server was wonderful, but everything else was just ok. The booth chairs are really oddly straight-backed and uncomfortable, so if you have the choice, pick a chair and your companion can be the one that suffers. The sushi was like what you get at the grocery store except served to you on dishes. Not sure if it really is handmade there or if they’re getting it from TNT upstairs. Honestly, I think my taste for sushi in the prairies has been spoiled by too many trips to Vancouver, and now I can’t enjoy it if I’m paying more than $ 10 and can’t see the ocean as I eat. This is the best(and only?) place for sushi in the mall, but if you’re not shopping there’s no reason to drop by.

It was ok, the rice isn’t sticky enough so the rolls fall apart. But the seafood is not the quality I look for in great sushi. The service was great and the atmosphere was too. If I am at the mall and don’t feel like going outside id go again.
