Tip Top Tailors

We went in looking for a grey vest for our wedding, as they seem to be rather hard to come by right now. (We only came across two in our travels; everything else was black.) The sales girl, who we told that we were very early in a search and were getting an idea of what was around, was very pushy. She directed us to a rack of vests in the right colour and started off by saying, «They fit very small, so I’m not sure if even our largest size is going to work for you.» Now, my fiancé does have a large barrel chest, but most XL vests fit him just fine, and these went up to a XXL. What do you know? The XL was a decent fit. I wasn’t overly impressed with the backing fabric, as is seemed a little on the chintzy side, but the vest was only $ 50. Next we asked is they had any french cuff shirts. No, but they did have convertible. What size? I said 16.5−17, 35 arm, she said, «I don’t think so,» remeasured and got the exact same measurements and then said, «Do you want to try this on or should I take these right up to the till?»
At this point, I just wanted to leave. I wasn’t impressed, and I felt we could do better elsewhere. My fiancé, however, decided to try on the shirt, which was okay (but he didn’t like the fact that the buttons would still show with his cuff links) and put the vest on hold for a few hours. Well, when we asked to put the vest on hold, she said, «Sure, but we have lots, so I’ll just put it back on the rack. You can come get if you like.» That’s not putting it on hold, but sure. Luckily, we found a much nicer vest for a comparable price at a store with much better service, so we didn’t have to go back,
Tip Top has a wide range of average shirts, ties and suits with sub par service. I get that their on commission and want to make sales, but being pushy is not the way to do that. Excelling at service is the way to do that. We won’t be returning.
