Ma Cuisine

I guess the customer service has improved a lot since some of the previous negative reviews. I thought this store was great… the staff are friendly, the store is in a great location, there is an amazing selection of items, and the prices are on par with (if not slightly better than) similar stores. The only drawback was the fact that parts of the store are somewhat disorganized, which makes it difficult to see all of the merchandise. However, that isn’t enough to deduct an entire star. I will definitely be back.

The store itself is pretty great. It’s huge and there are many fun kitchen items to peruse. There is a great price range of items, so it’s accessible for most. Though the store is not very organized, I don’t mind this because I take a greater amount of time to wander looking amongst the cool kitchen gadgets.
However, the staff here is probably the worst I have ever experienced. I have been in here multiple times and staff are not helpful, nor friendly. I visited on one occasion with my father and we both experienced the same thing – a hovering staff member who appeared to be watching and following us to see if we might have stole anything. She didn’t say anything to us, and it was insulting and I hardly got a good chance to look around because she was following us so closely.
I would not recommend this store, nor would I shop here again. I have found The Glebe Emporium on Bank and @Home on Elgin to be more welcoming stores.

This is a foodie/​chef/​home cooks paradise — they have almost every little thing that you could possible want. Great high end knife sets down to little ramakins for $ 1.50 (great for pre-​measuring spices for a recipe, cutlery, plates, every little items that will cut, slice, smash, grade, peel, or zest whatever fruit or veggie you have in mind.
Super helpful staff, but it’s that kind of store you can wander around with a fresh latte… lol…and find reasons to buy something fun.

I have to agree with Coy W. and Dawn M. about this place. The staff is just okay and not the most friendly.
Anyhow, I was looking for a tomato press. Since they didnt have any, they never mention to try The Domus Kitchen Store which is a block away.
On the positive side, they do have a nice selection of kitchen knick knacks.
I will buy stuff if its convenient, otherwise i will go somewhere else. I would give them 2.5 stars.

If you walk in the door you should walk out and down Murray St to Domus Kitchen…
This used to be the place I purchased items for my kitchen and I have only had similar experiences to Dawn were the staff were unfriendly, unhelpful and at times couldn’t be bothered. To be fair there have been some nice staff come in and out of there but for the most part it’s been a place I never felt great about going into due to the staff.
Ma Cuisine has a large selection of knick knacks for the kitchen but I feel that Domus has a larger selection of appliances and items that are functional and more modern. Honestly walk through both and let me know if you see the differences.
I still come back here now and then because I have friends that I shop for those knick knacks here but when I can avoid this place I do. If there are any other places similar to Ma Cuisine in Ottawa please let me know!

Overall the store is pretty good — nice selection of items, decently merchandised and prices are better than other stores a closer to the Byward Market.
I was turned off a bit by the staff — one women refused to smile, and answered the one question I had in a manner that made me think I must have been quite an interuption. (Get over it — you work in the service industry — you are *supposed* to answer my questions in a kind and friendly manner.) Besides her unfriendly response, I also felt like she was worried I was in there to shoplift or something — not sure what the problem was. I am sure however, that I personally am not too interested in returning to this particular store. I’m giving it a two star, as overall, store was good (a three star) — but they lose points for staff. Maybe it was a one-​off situation, maybe she was having a bad day — don’t know, don’t care.
Would I return: likely not — but if I do I’ll update my review if there’s a significantly different take on things! :-)

This store is okay. It has some nice things. It is on the expensive side. It doesn’t stock a lot of the items recommended by Cooks Illustrated. The first time I was in there the staff obviously followed me around, like I was going to steal something.

It’s a really funky store in the Byward Market that will have you leaving the store and wanting to go home and cook more.
The merchandise and many of the ideas in this store are much more upscale than your typical kitchen store so it’s usually just fun for me to browse than buy. I’m also not that talented in the kitchen so if I’m in here I’m on a gift mission.
The store has a lot of items inside and around Christmas it gets really busy so try to stop in on a weekday or brave a packed space if you dare try the weekends.
The staff are helpful and even wrapped up my gift the last time I was in there.
I’d recommend this place for anyone looking for a specialty kitchen item.

Nifty shop full of swanky kitchen stuff we stumbled upon while exploring the periphery of the ByWard Market. Lots of cool stuff to check out and outfit your kitchen with, provided you have the funds.
I picked up a couple of nifty tea spoons that hang on the edge of your cup. I’d been after them for ages, but was never able to track them down. This place had many different kinds of them! It is that kind of shop.

As the name would suggest, this place sells high-​er end kitchen and cooking supplies, everything from place-​mats to wine glasses and mortgage your house copper pots.
A bit on the pricey side as you would expect, but in the downtown area you basically have this or Domus (the store beside the restaurant).
If you’re heading down bank, there’s CA Paradis that’s also a great place to go for foodies or if you’re looking for some specific kitchen hardware.

Great collection of kitchen implements, but no ceramic coffee filters … and I thought this was THE place to find all things kitchen gadgets. The staff is not terribly friendly, in fact, they seem to treat shop patrons more like thieves, as one is followed around or watched while shopping.

This is the everything kitchen store. Gadgets galore and plenty of kitchy kitchen items but also a great selection of cookbooks and serious cookware and glassware line (many of which are European and hard to find anywhere else in the city).
This is a great place to go if you’re looking for gift ideas ie. hostess gifts, stocking stuffers or something for your favourite foodie.
I must confess to being somewhat of a closet foodie myself and when I came across a pair of baby pink onion goggles I had to have them– too funny!

This shop on the edge of the Byward market specializes in dishes, cookware and bakeware i.e. tools, accessories, silicone baking moulds and the like. However, I didn’t see any appliances.
There is a good selection of items at varying price points and pretty much all areas of household needs are covered.
The space is nice and airy, the staff is sometimes helpful but by no means eager or cheery. You may need to corner one!
It’s a destination shop and definitely the best one in the market of its type.

My wife watches the food channel all the time and fancies herself a kitchen goddess. She is always complaining about not having the right cooking tools/​toys — mortar and pestel? bigger cutting board? a food processor? tiny individual sauce bowls? a zester? I want to buy her some of this stuff for Christmas, but had no idea where to get the right stuff. A friend told me I had to go to Ma Cuisine on Dalhousie. So, I went and discovered the Valhalla of all things cooking and kitchen. What a place — they had all the gadgets. I especially loved how they had goodlies endorsed by some of the food channel chefs, like Rachel Ray (my wife’s favourite!!).
