Mrs Fields and Pretzelmaker

My first day in Toronto and I needed a quick bite and didn’t want to sit down so I decided to just get something on the go and came here. Me and my friend got a pretzel (4dollars) with sauce (1dollar) and I got their pretzel dog (4dollars) so the price should have come to 9 dollars. Tax included should have been 10 canadian dollars or something. It came to over 14 dollars! I didn’t realize the difference until I was thinking about it later. This place ripped me off

This particular Mrs. Fields/​Pretzelmaker location is perfectly fine if you want a quick pre-​movie snack or a pretzel before you run into the nearby subway. It’s is NOT perfectly fine if you want to order one of their cookie cakes.
I decided to order a cookie cake as a surprise for my closest girlfriend who was coming into town for the weekend and had recently celebrated a birthday. However, the fact it had been her birthday was just a ruse to ask her to be a bridesmaid in my wedding with the help of cake (it is known fact that if you ask someone a question with cake, they can’t say no).
I wanted to pick up the cookie on Friday at 6:00PM, so I called in my order the Tuesday before. The girl on the phone was really helpful and went through all the options with me: size (10″), flavour (chocolate chip), icing colour (red and white), and inscription (Be My Bridesmaid?) I confirmed I would pick my cake up on Friday at 6:00PM and I gave her my credit card number «for security.»
I arrived at this location promptly at 6:00 and asked for my cake. I was immediately greeted with a familiar deer-​in-​the-​headlights look that so often accompanies employees who have not been made privy to all the tasks that need to be completed throughout the day. So even though my order was clearly taped on the wall next to the decorating station, my cake had not even been started.
The employee, although obviously working alone, promised to get us a cake within 20 minutes if we were willing to wait around. With my girlfriend arriving the next day, I agreed. I just needed this cake. She then informed me that they didn’t have any 10″ cakes available. What?
After promising me a larger cake at the same price, we got on the escalator to sit in the food court while we waited for her to complete my already late order. We were halfway to the next level when she started waving us back. As I approached the counter she politely informed me, «I don’t have any icing.»
«I’m sorry, you don’t have any ICING?»
«Well, no red icing.»
«Ok, what DO you have?»
«Umm…green, blue, yellow, and chocolate.»
«Just do it in chocolate.»
«Are you sure?»
«Yes, I just want this cake, please.»
Upon returning 20-​minutes later, she had lovingly dotted the border of the cake, but the inscription was not yet in place. I forgave her because she WAS working alone, it WAS 6:00PM on a Friday, and customers kept stopping by for an after-​work pretzel or a bag of cookies. I’ve worked in retail. I get it.
Once she was free, she motioned us over.
«How do you want the words laid out on the cake? Do you want it to say ‘Be My Bridesmaid’ in three lines?»
«How about „Be My“ on one line, followed by „Bridesmaid“ on the second line? So two lines.»
There was a long pause.
«That doesn’t really work for me. I think it would look better in three lines.»
«Well, you’re the decorator.»
At this point, I could do nothing but laugh. The size I ordered wasn’t available. The icing I ordered wasn’t available. And now, the decorator wouldn’t write on the cake the way I thought would look best. Why did I even bother to place an order and make special requests in the first place? Why did she even ask my opinion about the inscription? Furthermore, if I HADN’T shown up to pick up my cake, would my credit card have been charged for something that didn’t exist? It’s been almost a week and these questions are still plaguing me.
Once the cake was finally done, I paid (for the size I originally ordered), and we were on our way. The product itself was good (nothing spectacular) and my girlfriend answered the cake’s question in the affirmative (as I said, you can’t say no to cake!)
All in all, I was pleased with how helpful the employee was, and the fact she was willing to put the cake together while we waited. However, I won’t be ordering a cake from Mrs. Fields again. It’s not worth the hassle.
