The Guy Who Fixes Computers

Like other people have mentioned, Calvin helped me on very short notice (within an hour). He was able to fix my computer (which ended up need to have the hard drive replaced), within just 2 days. It was great! I thought that he charged a fair price, and he was good at keeping in communication with me and updating me on the status of my computer. He also sent a follow-​up email a few weeks later to check that I was still happy with the repairs.

UPDATE: Calvin rectified his errors as was stated in the reply to this review. He fulfilled what he promised in his reply. I didn’t bother with the iPhone LCD screen refund because that was an accident on his part and anyway I no longer had the receipt.
As for his response time to my concern, Calvin was quick. I got a friend to drop off my MacBook for me because my work is far and don’t get out until very late. He took my computer and fixed the same issues from the previous time (i.e. GPU and mouse) and returned it after about a week completely fixed with a 6-​month warranty. I have added this review as an update and changed the rating from 1 to 4. Thanks for having great customer service.
It’s important to restore someone’s trust and I believe Calvin did that. I am willing to concede and give a better review when it is due. Thanks again.

I went with this repair person thinking a good Unilocal review was enough to trust someone, but most people don’t even know what happened to the insides of their electronics anyway.
My problem with him is that he exchanged my original LCD screen on my iPhone with a different one during a service that was ONLY supposed to be for battery replacement (effectively giving me a second-​rate LCD screen). I noticed it because my original one had a glass protector and when it came back to me, the glass no longer was there. I asked him what happened to it and he said he «needed to replace it when replacing my battery», which is blatantly false. Well, I was willing to let it go, but when I eventually had to repair my failing screen (ghosting/​glitching/​voice control no longer working) with the Apple Store, that’s when I discovered he did a poor job– missing screws, missing brackets, and thus poor connection. If he didn’t know how to repair an iPhone, he should have said so. Also, he shouldn’t have been dishonest with why he replaced my screen. If he broke it by accident, he should have mentioned it right away, instead of hoping I wouldn’t notice. Instead, I’m inclined to believe he was gutting it for original parts.
As for my MacBook, he gave it back with my mousepad not being able to click properly, but I was so upset about the iPhone that I didn’t bother returning and re-​doing the job. I just put up with it. And sure enough, 6 months later, MacBook was just dead.

Calvin allowed me to stop in the same day I called and in pick-​up was willing to wait if I was late. Made me feel as though my time was as valuable as his. Knowledgable. Timely. Great value. I really appreciated the information provided before my service and the care and interest he took in my issue. Highly recommended!

Calvin was efficient and honest. My macbook crashed because the hard drive was failing. During our first consultation, he explained that it could be a number of different problems. In some cases, it would have been better just to buy a new macbook. After a couple of hours of recovering data (he recovered everything btw), he called to let me know he could clean out the fan and restore my hard drive. He offered to stay later on the Sunday so I could pick it up the same day.
I would definitely return to him for any problems and also highly recommend him.

Just like with Lindsay, Calvin helped me out on really short notice. Called Thursday at 2pm and dropped in 10 minutes later to troubleshoot my laptop that was refusing to charge when plugged in. He solved the issue in literally 1 minute!
Tip: You can get into the building by buzzing in, but’s more convenient to go in through Blue Banana and find the elevator on the left side of the store.

No rip offs, no hedging, no attitude. The perfect IT guy to have on speed dial.

I spilt coffee on my macbook pro and asked if I could get a quote for the retrieval of my files on my external hard drive. Before leaving him the computer, I asked him if he fixes components in logic boards, and he said yes. Calvin messaged me and said that he had opened the computer and cleaned the logic board, and said that the computer runs with minor screen glitches. He had also told me that he retrieved the files that I did not give him permission to retrieve. When I came to his office, the computer was running, but the key board did not work at all, and the screen was awful. He guilted me into paying him because he did make the drive readable. I then opened up the computer with my father and saw that no cleaning was actually done on the side of the logic board where the coffee spilt. He literally opened up my computer just as I did, and took nothing at all apart. When I purchased a new computer, I plugged in my external drive, the files were there and suddenly gone, they were still corrupt. Since I felt like I dished out money to be lied to and got absolutely nothing in return, I messaged him about getting the files off of the drive, and received no answer. I messaged him again, and he gave me a quote. No 30 day satisfaction warranties? I think the guy is really dishonest and I really don’t think he is qualified for any real repairs. I would not recommend him to anyone.

I had an old Mac that needed to be fixed up. After looking at Unilocal reviews I went to see Calvin and so glad I did. He was amazing. He quickly identified the issue told me the price to fix it (which was very reasonable) and had my machine fixed in no time even though I said it was not a rush. I will definitely be going back to see him when I next have a computer issue.

I got a bit carried away and accidentally upgraded the firmware on my Western Digital MyCloud HDD to an unsupported version, bricking the device. I found a tutorial online to restore the firmware and preserve my data, but lacked the hardware to do it myself. I sat down with Calvin for a few hours and we fixed the thing in no time. When other shops would have given me a quick backup of the data, overcharged me, and told me to toss the beyond-​repair $ 250 device, Calvin listened to me, was patient with me, and did things right way. Now, the device is working again like normal.
I totally recommend this guy if you’re looking for personalized service. Excellent price and excellent experience all around.

I somehow downloaded a virus onto my macbook air. Being new to Toronto, I wasn’t really sure where I could take it to get fixed. The Guy Who Fixes Computers got me with his name: simplicity is to be trusted. Turns out I made a good choice! Calvin was easy to get ahold of, his location is central (Spadina & College), he quoted me a reasonable price and got the job done quickly! A week later my sister spilled her drink all over her macbook air. It was late at night but I called Calvin right away. He told us he would meet us at his office that night. We really appreciated his genuine concern and he was successful in repairing her computer as well. Calvin is knowledgeable not only in computer repair but also in website development, point of sales systems and more. He has helped us out quite a bit with our small business technological challenges. The only downfalls are that he doesn’t really get started til around 11am some days and parking can be a bit of a challenge in that area.
