Consider this is a public service announcement — avoid this scummy rat trap at all costs. We ducked in on a Friday night and were immediately informed they had no beer available. Not paying your distributors? So the dude says he could make«any drink» I wanted. My initial request, not an obscure cocktail by any stretch, is met with a «What’s that?» So we order a couple of bourbon sours(no-egg), which come thimble sized. That will be $ 21 plus tip! Seriously, for two minuscule cocktails? I’ve been to 5-star hotels that are cheaper than that. And because they apparently have no drink menu, and we get no paper bill, we have to take his word for it. This felt shadier than oak tree on a summer’s day. And they’re certainly not spending that money on cleaning supplies. The bathrooms were an absolute disgrace, with overflowing garbage bins that were clearly a buildup from the day(week?) prior. I literally had to pour globs of cheap soap out of a industrial-sized container onto my hands because there was no dispenser. I felt like I was in a gas station. As we hurried out, I caught the eye of the cook, who looked away in what felt like a moment of shame. This is the Deep South.

This place needs to get organized! Shila B.‘s review is pretty spot-on to what we similarly experienced. Came here with a SocialShopper expecting a feast but this was no feast! They were out of the beef ribs so we had the ¼ rack of pork ribs and a brisket sandwich with a side of beans and coleslaw. Pretty straight-up plating of a bunch of meat slathered with sauce. One bonus though — they were out of dessert(part of our Socialshopper deal) so our server gave us free beers instead… sweet!

I saw this reviewed on the front page of Unilocal on October 15th and book marked it for future reference. For some reason these past 3 months I have been craving southern style BBQ. I got a social shopper and decided to take Gareth with me who loves Southern food. I bought a Social Shopper at the same time as everyone else, therefore, the bad reviews started pouring in from other’s before we even had a chance to get to the establishment. Just a heads up that they’ve changed their weekend hours of operation from 2 pm onwards. I did point this out to the gentleman on the phone about updating their Unilocal page. We took all the reviews into consideration with the coupon and braced ourselves for the worst. We spent the money, therefore, we might as well come here. They had a major party before, therefore, they were sold out of 80% of their menu right when the doors opened. We were unable to use our Social Shopper coupon to the full potential cause they ran out of dessert. They also ran out of certain soda pops and beef. For the soda I just got them to mix whatever. Not too worried about the dessert. The waiter was apologetic and offered us another side. Since they just opened the ribs took 15 minutes which was fine. Standard wait time. This place is small with reasonable seating. Cornbread was moist and flavourful. Comes with melted butter for dipping. Mac and cheese was smooth. Ribs were really smooth and nice. Don’t be deceived by the Social Shopper. It wasn’t a feast at all and when I tallied the actual total of what our meals and sides costed without the dessert it wasn’t even close to the original valued amount but it was good marketing to get us in through the doors which worked. In spite of being out of so many items and small portions, the waiter was friendly. Just not worth coming back for.

Our office came for lunch at 12:30 pm on a Thursday afternoon & the place was empty. Perhaps we beat the lunch rush. The ribs are the best value. The coleslaw + veggies with dip are the best sides. Both my co-worker & I ordered cokes which were served in coke glasses but upon first sip tasted like dish detergent. We call the server over + told him. He didn’t apologize. I ordered water instead. My co-worker ordered another coke in a different glass this time & it tasted fine.

Came here for a late lunch during a weekday. Expecting to avoid the noon lunch rush downtown. Well… there was only 1 party in there and the rest of the tables looked untouched, so needless to say it was not a hot lunch spot. Regardless, I was hungry and willing to try this out thanks to their groupon. Sat ourselves anywhere. The place is in a very old building. The washrooms had flys and tiles that were loose. That’s fine, i’m easy with that kind of stuff and it gives it a bit of character. I am from east van and i’m use to these types of establishments. Ordered our food and this is where the bus fell off the tracks. The order took almost 30 mins to get. Let me stress, that there was only 1 other table in the restaurant. During a work day at lunch time, if you don’t get people in and out by the time their lunch hour is up, no one is coming back for lunch. This is just common sense for any restaurant in the downtown area. Food was fine, not great to look at, but was tasty enough. Portions were small relative to their menu prices — not sure if it was scaled down for groupon purchase. Looked like Cafeteria food plating, literally. We did not receive napkins until we were half way done our food. We were scrambling to eat to make our lunch hour and had to use the bathroom paper towels for napkins. Apparently the server could not find any napkins in house and had to go «next door» to get some. Seriously? Again, how a restaurant can not be prepared for LUNCH hour is beyond me. It’s not like they are busy either. There really is no excuse for such levels of professionalism. Place is just sloppy and amateur. Staff is on their phones instead of bringing cutlery or filling waters for their guests. I don’t expect this place to be operating for much longer if they don’t fix their«don’t give a F» attitudes. Won’t be going back and not recommended.

The ribs are good but I can see that getting the food from ready to table is taking way too long, and there’s 9 people in here… Server seems more interested in chatting versus taking care of customers. Not coming back…

Vancouver has some pretty awesome places for ribs and pulled pork and especially for Mac and cheese. Competition is relatively fierce I think with peckinpah, chewie’s, Memphis Blues to name a few. The ribs were fall off the bone tender. The Mac and cheese was not cheesey and the top felt a little undercooked and it came out to us on the room temp-warm side. The cornbread was tasty but a pretty small piece and no butter. Service was friendly but a little forgetful. I could be wrong but it seemed like the server was also doing bar and loading dishes. I think the ambience would be wicked if it wasn’t playing top 40 and maybe kept it blues or something to go along with the theme of the Deep South.

Desparetly needs help with a menu and drinks. Where are the hush puppies, the fried okra, the whiskey drinks? The space was great, cool setup, just missing it on the food and drinks completely

I have to come back. The website said it opens at 1pm. Came at 1 pm and the owner said it doesn’t open till 2pm. He asked if I am coming here for food or drinks. I told them I am here for food and that I bought a Groupon and want to use it. Well the owner ended up buying back my Groupon and gave me a coupon for next time 50% off. So I have to make another trip back. Friendly People. But I will continue this review next time.

My fiancée and I live close to Deep South. Been wanting to try for some time. We decided to get some take out. I ordered ½ rack of ribs w beans and slaw. I also ordered the beef brisket w bens and veggies! I must say the ribs were amazing. Fall off the bone and melt in ur mouth. The bbq sauce was savoury and spicy! The brisket was also fantastic. Not to mention the cole slaw was supper fresh and crunchy and not drowning in sauce. The beans are also a must have. Super super tender! Great food! Great value! Friendly staff!

High expectation, left disappointed. Deep South has the potential of being a cool spot to chill and eat, unfortunately that’s not the case when we visited. The place is a mess. It took the staff half hour to serve our food. We found out about this place via SocialShopper for half off. Don’t purchase it it’s not worth it. Food 2⁄5 Service 1⁄5 Location 1⁄5 I would not go back to this place. Do your self a favour by finding another restaurant before visiting this place.

I guess I’ll rate 2 stars? The food was tasty and the server was a nice guy, but we were ripped off by the social shopper«feast»(as it looks like someone else on here was too). It says the value of it was $ 52, yet when we looked at the menu, the food we got added up to maybe $ 20 total? We were given a very small servings of beans and chips(1 of each), 1 small coleslaw, 2 quarter rack of ribs, and one dessert. They were out of cornbread but we were not offered a replacement. Again, the food was ok, but felt ripped off and the social shopper value did not reflect the prices on the menu at all.

Great Food, great times every Wednesday there is comedy and I have a great time there. The owner is the best. It’s my new favourite venue to hang out.

Great new bbq joint! Ribs were perfectly cooked and the baked beans here are out of this world. Normally I dont even like beans but these were perfectly cooked and honestly were the best beans I have ever had. The owner is a personable chill guy and went out of his way to talk to every table. The brisket sandwhich was good too but could have used a bit more sauce. The restaurant just opened so looking forward to the expanded menu.

I ordered a dish that described itself as 2 pulled pork sliders for $ 5. I guess I got a sufficient quantity of food for the price. I received half of a pulled pork sandwich on a dry Multigrain bun. Now, I wouldn’t have taken issue except the menu clearly advertised 2 pulled pork sliders. I wouldn’t have cared if they were small but I feel like so little effort was put into my food. There was a sign outside proudly declaring«best barbecue in vancouver». They were also out of brisket, which accounts for roughly half their menu items.

I like this new restaurant! This location has had a plethora of businesses occupy the space in a handful of years. I hope Deep South makes it! For its first opening week, the menu is super limited. They are trying things out and building business conservatively. They had run out of beef brisket so I got ¼ rack of ribs and a bowl of spicy baked beans. Everything was delicious! Ribs were large and meaty, sliding off the bone. I was tempted to order another. Attractive price point here — $ 5 food!!! I had been walking home last week and noticed the sign. So perfect! It’s nice to have another $ 5 option to compete with the Warehouse.
