Staff know their jeans. Very helpful. Great selection. I have athlete legs so I have a hard time finding pants that fit at the leg while not billowy at the waist. They helped me choose and try on jeans for 30 mins, happily.
People are only upset at the price because they’re used to paying for Levis. You won’t find Levis here! (ok maybe LVCs)

Dutil is my go-​to shop for men’s jeans. The selection is incredible, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the quality of the brands are some of the best in the biz. I’ve always found at LEAST a couple of pairs of pants that look great on me every time I walk into this store. Most recently I was in there and tried on a handful of items and bought two pairs of jeans all within about 20 minutes. If you’re a dude like myself who doesn’t like to waste too much time shopping, forget about the other stores and just come here. Yes, the price tags are a little higher than some people might want to pay, but you know what they say: you get what you pay for.
My only complaint comes from a time I also had my jeans hemmed here. It was taking what felt like forever to get my awesome new pants back that I desperately wanted to wear. I eventually found out that the delay was because their antique hemming machine was in for repairs. Apparently it gives a really incredible stitch, but an option to have it done faster with a regular sewing machine would have really been appreciated as I was anxious to have them back for a trip I was leaving for. The worst part is that when I finally got them back, I couldn’t help but feel like they were a bit longer than what we had agreed on.
So in short, buy all of your pants here — get them hemmed at a tailor you trust.

Walls and walls of raw denim, great staff, and more raw denim. What else do you need in a shopping experience?

I read a lot of good reviews several years ago and I finally got to go! The girl working there (I didn’t get her name or forgot, sorry!) helped me finding the style I was looking for and kept coming back to ask if I was doing alright (without making me feel uncomfortable). I went early so stayed there quite a bit trying but she seemed to not mind my stay at all. At the end, I decided which one to purchase, and at that time, there were a lot of people in the store so she did not accompany me to the door, but this is just a Denim store so I didn’t really mind. Overall, it was quite pleasant and I was impressed by friendly but not too pushy service as a denim store. I’m definitely going back when I need another pair of jeans!
P. S. If you are a girl looking for raw denims, they have several.

I came here after hearing so much hype about this place from friends. I finally came in here. I know a good pair of jeans but holy crap is it $$$. The customer service was awesome, jeans fit me great, however, I know that things can be $$$ but I just passively backed out when I saw the price and made some excuse that I had to meet a friend for lunch and that I was browsing ’cause I was a bit embarrassed to say that I couldn’t afford the pants, especially after the lady spent so much time with me.

Great selection of Denim. If you stop by the store, ask for Jerry. He is very personable, laid back and great at recommending different brands and fits.

Being from the San Francisco Bay Area, I have been to my fair share of quality supply/men’s boutique shops (ie. Selfedge, Welcome Stranger, Azalea, Standard & Strange), so I think it is fair for me to say that the service here is one of the best I’ve received at a boutique shop.
Quality supply stores are often intimidating since prices are typically higher than average consumers expect and most brands are largely unfamiliar to many casual shoppers. Oftentimes this intimidating atmosphere is made worse by employees that simply watch you or do their own thing as you shop because they expect that most people that enter a store like this already have an understanding of the culture of quality supply and thus have certain expectations and ideas in their mind already about what they are looking for. Other stores hire employees that simply do not understand the culture or are unknowledgeable about their stock which irritates me even more. If someone who works in a quality supply store knows less about their denim or brands than I do, that just shows that they were not properly trained and should not have been hired in the first place.
Dutil, on the other hand, does neither of these and hires extremely friendly and knowledgeable staff that responds to the items that you seem to be interested in with helpful advice about the brand or suggestions about other similar articles of clothing that you might like. They do so without any pushiness and are also extremely patient with all their customers who are trying to learn more about the culture or are still wrapping their heads around the idea of paying $ 200 for a pair of jeans.
I was extremely impressed with the service. I came in just to explore their collection and asked about a few brands I liked to see if they carried them. The employees immediately knew what I was looking for, showing a respectable understanding of their stock and where everything was. My girlfriend who was completely new to selvedge culture picked out a pair to try on and the staff immediately had other suggestions for her to try from other brands but with a similar fit. On top of that, I was particularly interested in a jacket that was a bit out of my price range and the staff was very helpful in advising me that the jacket would stretch a bit and that the next size up would definitely be too large. I toyed with the idea of purchasing this jacket for maybe an hour and the whole time, the staff was patient with me in answering questions, but never pushed me to buy the jacket even though it was obvious I was loving it.
Overall, a great experience here and I will definitely be back, even if just to hang out with staff.

AMAZING service!
Decided to check this store out based on other ratings. At first glance I didn’t like the store: way too dark and warehouse-​style; plus fitting rooms don’t have mirrors so you have to come out to see a mirror, which I hate (plus mirror is out in the middle of the store, not by the fitting rooms. Note to staff: FIX THIS! Mirrors are cheap.) But… sales staff were amazingly helpful and I got a pair of jeans I LOVE. Liked them so much I decided I wanted another pair. It was at least a month later so I thought I’d phone first to see if they still had them in stock. They checked for me; they were out; and you know how usually when you ask if a store will have more of an item in, you get the «oh we don’t know what will come in»? Well, the person on the phone checked with someone else and they told me they’d have the «same» style but as it’s a new season it might be a bit different. Also they wouldn’t have it for a few weeks. I’m not in that part of town so didn’t want the hassle of checking in every few weeks… so they said they’d phone me when they come in! Now that’s great service. Just please get better lighting AND mirrors in the changing rooms! (Store manager: last one is CRUCIAL)

For once, the men’s side is actually bigger than womens, ²⁄₃ vs ¹⁄₃.
Get them now, 35% off on some models, i just did ;) A soft-​grey, actually denim that will wear to your body, so i’ve been led to believe.

This Dutil denim shop is the bomb! Hands down, it has THE BEST selection of jeans I’ve ever seen anywhere! The selection is truly amazing and includes all of the premium jean brands you would expect, along with a bunch of smaller, lesser known and local jean brands. The service was excellent. The staff know their product and are dedicated to helping customers find the perfect pair of jeans. I will definitely go back, and may even order from them online as I live in California and wish we had a Dutil denim shop here. The shop is a must for anyone looking for a pair of jeans.

Now, is the perfect time to try on jeans! Ha ha! I crack myself up. Everyone knows THERE. IS. NO. PERFECT. TIME. TO. TRY. ON. JEANS. It is emotional and awful and taxing and terrible. That is, usually it is. At Dutil, it is kind of a dream.
During this last trip to Vancouver, I was with my husband, who NEEDED new jeans. So, we walked into Dutil with purpose. Face the thing you fear, you know?!? We were clear with the sales associate that my husband needed a straight-​leg-​medium-​to-​dark-​rinse and I needed a black wash skinny jean. This glorious girl brought us both brands we had not heard of, but were very pleasantly surprised by their fit and quality. Just fantastic jeans recommendations. When does that happen in real life? Gastown. I am telling you.
At the end, my husband’s debit card didn’t work because the bank froze it due to a fraud concern (we are not from Vancouver) and the sales woman handled it really smoothly. We paid with another card, resolved the issue with the bank and got some amazing jeans. Kind of perfect.

Awesome service and expert opinions on all things denim. High level brands and lots of choice.

I tend to buy a lot of my clothes over the internet as local retailers can rarely compete on price. Dutil manages to beat the internet retailers on price in many cases and deliver incredible selection, helpful service and the benefit of trying on 20 pairs of jeans to find the best fit possible.
The most expensive pair of jeans I’ve bought at $ 200 (which seems to be the going rate for much of the their inventory) but well worth it for the fit and quality.

Those shopping spree days are long over for me but of the couple times yearly when I buy new jeans, Dutil is a must-​stop. Forget going there if you are looking for a bargain pair, the cheaper the better. These guys are serious about denim — premium denim that is. Nothing but the best, and the place is stocked with endless stacks of jeans in full array of colours, grades, cuts and numerous brands to choose from. Just a glimpse of all those goodies is mad sensory overload, exciting for a repressed shopaholic but at the same time it gave me a headache for not knowing where to start looking.
Fortunately the service is very friendly with a couple of the staff being particularly helpful in getting me into some very well-​fitting jeans that I am still very much in love with. Being too lazy to pick through everything, these gals know their product well and quickly directed me to what I was searching for efficiently. The only thing is with a rather young staff, these guys tend to recommend going a size or two smaller than what may actually be appropriate, so take the sizing advice with a grain of salt and figure that out for yourself. At least the hardest part of getting the right cut is done for you. =)
The only thing that really leaves something to be desired is the lack of hemming service. How is it possible that a high-​end denim specialty store has no in-​house, or even a contract tailor? I’m sure if they offered that service people would buy more from them because let’s face it… who wouldn’t want new jeans all ready-​to-​wear so that they can sport the new stuff walking out of the store? I know I would.
And every time I visit Dutil I am a few hundred bucks poorer… dammit…

Shopping for jeans can be traumatic and can reduce self-​esteem down to zero with all the different cuts and shapes. Finding the right combo of butt-​hugging, enough room up front, the best pocket size, not too high, not too low … all this can be exasperating.
The staff at Dutil know their jeans well and rather than trying on 20 pair and leaving with nothing, I explained what I wanted and sizing issues. The helpful associate grabbed 7 different pair, and 2 out of seven were serious contenders. With the 200+ price, I wasn’t ready to splurge for two pair, but finally was able to pick a pair of Earnest Sewn jeans that I have gotten compliment after compliment on.

Apparently all the amazing helpful service people had the day off. I need jeans. I heard they had them here. Indeed, it was true. The jeans were in piles. I looked at them. There was one other customer (and their entourage) buying a pair of jeans in the store, apparently a very complicated and drawn out transaction that required both staff (or whatever, I was just trying to find a pair I wanted at a price I was willing to pay among the all the blue washes and cuts).
Finally the other customer left (along with their retinue that included a screaming child, sweet Jeebus, what lungs). In the meantime, I had found a pair of jeans looked like they’d be what I was specifically looking for — straight leg, indigo, a little sumpin sumpin on the back pockets. Also a brand I’d had a pair of for years and quite liked. They were sized for a giraffe’s legs and I wanted to ask if hemming was available. But I was also pretty pissed off that I had been in the store this long with barely an acknowledgement, and I seriously questioned why I would want to give these people my money now.
Oh, look, they noticed me. I am examining a particular pair! Could I be trying to find my size? «Do you have any questions?» he asked. (Why yes I do … am I a mirage, or do you want to make a quick $ 200+ in your last 10 minutes of openage today?) «Do you offer any hemming service or do these come in different lengths?» No they don’t offer alteration, and am informed that preeemium denim is often made only in one length because it’s easier to have them shortened then lengthened. I am fascinated by this fact of denim AND physics. I am unimpressed that they don’t offer some kind of alterations service in the equation, given jeans of one length plus big bucks ($ 100 – 400 a pair) multiplied by customers of many sizes equals go do it yourself. As a non-​tall person, I’m aware that I could buy the jeans and take them to an alterationist, but … I am now not in the mood to pay preeemium prices and then have the additional errand to run.
So at that moment, despite the cute jeans I’d like to try on, I elect not to keep the staff from the rest of their Sunday plans. Mine immediately included a good long walk to channel my rage.

Well…you kind of screwed up where I was going here.
Only the best very-​expensive jeans. I also like how it’s all just in piles, because you know what’s up in this place: denim. Denim is up in this place. And I know some stuff about the pants I’m wearing, which is actually sort of comforting in a weird way.
Okay, no it isn’t. I’ll admit it. But the employees at Dutil never will, and I respect that.

Other than bike stuff, jeans are my favourite thing to treat myself to. As a result of this, dutil is my favourite place to shop in Vancouver.
Tons of jeans. Lots of stuff that you can’t find anywhere else. Super friendly, unbelievably helpful staff.
I have never left there anything other than delighted.
if you were to force me to say something negative about the place it would be that amazing jeans aren’t cheap… So as a result I don’t get to shop there as much as I would like to.

Best denim store in Vancouver. One of the best stores I’ve shopped in, period!
We came here this weekend to get some new jeans for the boyfriend. He had a pair of Lucky Brand jeans that he wore everyday, but they didn’t have that style/​colour anymore. After checking Unilocal,we came to Dutil, and boy are we glad we did. Tons of excellent, excellent quality raw denim from numerous brands. He tried on some Cheap Mondays and a few other brands before finding heaven in a pair by Naked and Famous. Reasonably priced, too, for raw denim.
I wasn’t planning on shopping for myself, but I decided to try some on just for giggles. The sales person was incredibly helpful and found a pair from Made and Crafted by Levi’s that fit me perfectly and didn’t make my wide birthing hips look like, well, wide birthing hips. I didn’t buy them, but I’ve been kicking myself and I think I’ll have to go back.
Dutil has a sister shop around the corner that serves as a showcase for one brand every six months. Right now it’s Naked and Famous, which we discovered when the sales person called over to see if they had the pants my boyfriend liked so much in a darker wash in his size. They did, and the staff person at that store was just as helpful as at Dutil.
He ended up with two pairs of jeans that day and loves them both. Compared to his new ones, my old jeans are so unsatisfying. Off to Dutil when I get a chance!

I luvs me a good retail environment and Dutil fits the bill. They specialize in all things denim. The store kind of reminds me of an old barn house you may find in the middle of the prairies, with tires, old sewing machines, smeg fridges, and incredible funky bails of denim. Not to forget to mention the piles of jeans as far as the eye can see. They offer up both men’s and woman’s in all the best brands.
