Heirloom Vegetarian

It makes me so sad to have to rate Heirloom negatively, but for a health-​oriented restaurant, it is really important for me to share this. I normally love this restaurant, and actually dine there almost daily. On this particular day, I didn’t have time to dine in-​house so decided to order take-​out instead. The dish I wanted was not available (no problem), but the server suggested one of their sandwiches would be a great option instead. I mentioned that I was Celiac so it needed to be gluten-​free. Brittany, the server, was very kind, and said «no problem, we can make this with gluten-​free bread». I was excited to be able to order a sandwich (which I so rarely do because of the bread factor). When I went to pick up my order, I noticed on the bill that it just said 1 Chickpea sandwich, without any gluten-​free addition. So I asked Brittany, ‘I just want to double check that this is, in fact, gluten-​free?’, and she said ‘oh yes, absolutely’. I didn’t bother to look at my sandwich and went on my way. When I got to my destination (25 mins away), I sadly noticed that the bread was NOT gluten-​free. It was their regular bread. If I ate this, I would have been VERY sick, for a number of days. I am just so disappointed that in a city like Vancouver, and a health-​conscious restaurant specifically, that such a mistake would have occurred. ESPECIALLY given that I asked Brittany twice to ensure it was, in fact, gluten free.
Hopefully the owner can better train his staff to be aware that certain food allergies are not just requests, but absolutely crucial for the health of their patrons.

«Very Disappointed »: We are vegetarian and went there with our vegan friends, This restaurant has Long waiting time, Small Portions even in Big Plates and super expensive for the amount of food you are getting. The mushrooms we order was super salty and vinegary.
After appetizer and big plate main dishes we were still hungry.
We ordered a big bowl soup each hoping to get the soup fast enough before loose our appetite but still waited another 30 minutes when we didn’t feel hungry any more.
We felt cheated and when complained about the amount of time we wasted waiting for the watery soup we didn’t even get an apology. They are too proud of themselves and this is not going to last when people become to know them. I experienced the worst customer service in this restaurant. We never go back.

I am disappointed. It was our first time at this establishment and, now, probably the last. Our reservation for Sunday evening at 6pm was kaboshed because some official doesn’t read their email. I telephone 2 days later and got 5:30. Ok.
The portions were small. The big plate was, indeed, big but the volume of food was not. The food took some time to prepare even though they were not busy at 5:30. Most of the food was interesting enough but an $ 8 order of Avocado frits net you exactly 6 fries. Really? We ordered a second helping and another appetizer, also small. I had beer and it was ok; however, my guests had one form of juice or another and they were watery. I won’t bore you with the details but a $ 16 order of mushrooms was 5 mushrooms, I think, and they were spoilt with the taste of vinegar.
So, 3 appies and 4 big plates for the 4 of us and we were still hungry. So we ordered 4 large soups. The soups took almost 30 minutes to arrive. Really? How long does it take to scoop a bowl of soup? By the time the soup arrived we asked politely to send 2 back, we would share the other two. Well, they wouldn’t hear of it. «No,» was the response. Really? And you want to be a classy Veggie place.
My name is Felix and my bill came to $ 171 and change. Really? For veggies? I left a $ 10 tip which is more than they deserved.
I am not happy. Not at all impressed. And, wouldn’t care to return.

Decent food, with good choices.
Long waits and I did not feel the breakfast was worth the wait.
Dinner was great, quite fast and tasty.
Breakfast — quite bland and flavourless but was so hungry after the more than an hour wait, I ate most of it, but could not finish it as it was not good.

Had to try this place, even though I’m not vegan or even vegetarian. It has a lovely, almost elegant, modern décor, not what you’d at all expect from a vegan/​vegetarian restaurant.
The staff was excellent and, on the recommendation of the server, I ordered the feature of the day, Eggs Benedict, Heirloom-​style.
I had to wait twenty-​five minutes from the time I placed my order, even though the restaurant had very few customers at 2:30 in the afternoon. I didn’t at all mind but the wait surprised me.
The Eggs Benedict dish was wonderful, with so many really beautifully done vegetables; however, the potatoes were cold and overdone. I don’t think it’s going too far to say they were dry and burnt. Clearly, they’d been sitting waiting for the twenty-​five minutes I’d been waiting. The server urged me to let her replace them but I politely said no.
It seems to me that at almost twenty dollars for the feature dish, someone in the kitchen should have seen to the potatoes arriving hot and edible the first time.
Lovely place and staff but definitely pricey for cold, overdone potatoes. Great ambiance and interesting contrast to what you’d expect from a vegan/​vegetarian restaurant.
Best of all, I loved the plethora of other veggies that came with the poached eggs.

Unfortunately the happy hour is not as happy with food items half the size (and the same price). Basically ends up being half orders from the regular menu with really no savings. For example the happy hour dips plate only comes with one dip, less than half the previous serving of veggies and half the bread. Oh well, it was great while it lasted.

Amazing brunch! I love how they have a vegan side and a vegetarian side for the menu! I had the vegan pancakes and my friend had the eggs benny, everything was hot and served pretty fast. Our waitress (long curly blonde hair) was really nice, attentive and accommodating. The best part was the cleanliness, I have visited many vegan/​veggie restaurants in the city and actually walked out of a few because of lack of cleanliness. This place is immaculate and from now on my favorite place!
I would recommend heirloom to everyone

This has become one of our favourite stops in the Vancouver area. Great menu with options for even the most sceptical guest at this vegetarian restaurant. We’ve tried several juices and a couple of their cocktails and each have left us wanting more.
This visit included possibly the best pancakes in town, huevos rancheros, and a mushroom benny… none of which disappointed. Portions are large enough to fill you up and the 49^th parallel drip coffee is a perfect compliment to a great brunch off Granville.
Hoping to come back for dinner and or drinks to take advantage of your «late» menu and not just the early one.
A must try! We brought our kids (toddler and tiny) and felt at home… thank you and your team, Heirloom.

I love me some vegetarian breakfast!
Heirloom vegetarian may not be the inexpensive greasy spoon that some are looking for, but it’s definitely a winner for those in the market for a filling meal made with high quality ingredients by talented chefs.
Usually I lean toward vegetarian meat, but since they only offer field roast (not my fav), I opt to keep it simple. The heirloom omelet sans onions is my go-​to. It’s flavorful, more than filling, and healthy (ish). I LOVE the salad that comes with, it’s fresh greens with a delicate dressing and seeds. The home fries are nothing to write home about, but when soaked in the (house-​made?) ketchup they’re really good! The buckwheat pancakes are also worth ordering if you can possibly fit them.
The coffee is great, and refills abound!
$ 20 per person may seem like a lot, but you get what you pay for! People less ravenous than me can easily split a meal too.

My first visit today, over an hour for the food to arrive, it when it eventually arrived it was cold and so was the coffee, I can honestly say it was about the worse service I’d ever received in a restaurant. To be honest I’d be ashamed if I served such a meal to my husband… Won’t be going back…

Ate here twice while in Vancouver. Fresh, healthy, filling/​large portions, beautifully presented and awesome service. Not to mention delicious… I’ve traveled the US and Canada eating at vegetarian restaurants and this is definitely in my Top 5.

I have heard great story about this one, but I guess I have my expectation too high.
First of all, I’ll give credit to their infrastructure. Nice and clean, soothing and elegant was my first impression, I just hope their food can be equally as impressive.
There were two of us on the day of our visit, we started with Marinated King Oyster Mushroom as our appetizer. First bite was pretty good, the warm salad (arugula) was pretty flavorful, but the star of this dish — marinated king oyster is dripping with soy sauce. I honestly could not believe how salty they are.
And then we waited an hour for our entrée.
AN HOUR, I kid you not. A couple sat next to us after us got their burgers first, and left when we are still working on our entrée.
My friend ordered the Ranchero Burger and I ordered the Spinach Spatzle, and they arrive our table about 30 minutes apart.
After our appetizer, we waited 40 minutes before asking our server to check on our food, which she apologized and rush away to check. another 15 minute later, she came back with the Ranchero Burger (BTW, the yam fries were amazing, and the burger was quite good too). And then the long wait started again.
After we finish the burger together, and we are about to give up on my spatzle and ready to leave, the server rush over with my plate…
The spatzle was pretty good too, but I think the potatoes are a bit too salty again. I have to admit that I was expecting more from what I heard about this place.
Overall experience was ruined by the long wait, but the food itself was not bad except for it being too salty. I don’t think I will ever go back again, and for those who wanted to try it out, don’t go there on a night when you have something else plan for the same night.
Our server told us it was because they have a small kitchen, and it does usually take a bit longer for food to come out.

Very cute little vegetarian place. The atmosphere and décor is wonderful. They have some cool items on the menu, and feature both vegetarian and vegan options.
The service was friendly but pretty slow. Moroccan flat bread was wonderful. They have a fun selection of alcohol with some cool drinks.
Definitely a neat spot, highly recommend.

A gf and I had heard good things about Heirloom but as neither of us are «vegetarian» it wasn’t our go-​to. When we finally tried it, OMG what had taken us so long?! Amazing.
The ambience was less dressy than we had expected. And really, really dim lighting. We almost couldn’t see what we were eating lol.
We shared the jerk tofu sliders (five stars!!!) and I had the kale Caesar. Delicious. But HUGE. Piled high and deep it was the size of my head. I took some home.
For dessert we shared the dark
Chocolate cake with pistachio and banana. Unreal… so freaking good! I had no idea of nutritional info for anything but I left stuffed yet feeling healthy :)
We’re coming back and possibly ordering the exact same items… they were that good.

Wow. Came here tonight. I am from West Hollywood and this place easily compares to Crossroads and Gracias Madre for Vegan dining.
Everything was so good. Gluten free heaven.
They have a vegetarian menu and vegan but keep in mind most things you can order vegan by taking out the cheese etc.
The artichoke hearts were like fried calamari but a billion times better. Everything has a creamy vegan sauce so that is always a plus. The menu is about 95% gluten free.
The dip plate was seriously good and the bread didn’t even taste gluten free.
The mushrooms were insane and I don’t even like mushrooms that much.
Oh and the Bloody Mary was spicy and gluten free vegan perfection. Not too heavy something light about it bursting with flavor.
Avocado frites were good but heavy since it’s avocado so share with others for sure.
Then the heirloom burger the one with the fried onion ring and beet bacon. I could barely eat it I was so full but it’s also a gluten free bun if requested and I tried bits and pieces it was amazing.
Besides all the amazing food the service was seriously perfect. Everyone was great. Awesome place good vibe for a romantic dinner.
Oh yeah and the dessert is to die for too. They can do no wrong for me. Being a gluten free vegan and finding a place like this is like hitting the jackpot.

I saw this reviewed on the front page of Unilocal on August 1, 2015 and decided to book mark this for future reference.
The place is honestly over hyped. Dishes are platted well, ingredients are decent, however it’s things that you can prepare at home.
Customer service was decent but I felt very f froo froo.
They made effort with the décor. It’s basically a place you would take if you wanted to impress your date.
I loved all my dishes but the price margins were hard to justify.

Hubby and I have come to Heirloom for special occasions several times; this time it was for our anniversary.
We arrived in time for happy hour — $ 6 for wine and watermelon mojitos! Food was delicious and potions were plentiful. I had the veg sausage ragu — very tasty — and hubby had the thai curry — flavourful with just the right amount of heat. Our waiter was attentive, but not too much.
Prices are a bit higher than other places, but I don’t mind paying more for quality ingredients and good service.

Updated review 1 star: Uuuuugh. There is absolutely nothing worse than horrendous customer service. So, not a huge deal… my eggs were undercooked. I let the server know. She took my meal back and had the kitchen remake. 50 minutes in, I finally had food in front of me, BUT the redo was still full of raw egg. Instead of saying anything, I just didn’t eat my food. Upon being billed, I was charged full price for my meal AND, when I questioned the server, the manager came over to argue with me. Also, what restaurant manager wears an old turqoise collared shirt with baggy, old cargo shorts and Nike running shoes and expects to be taken seriously in an establishment that runs $ 60 for breafkast for 2?
Upon leaving, I flipped the manager the bird and I will NEVER be back. I cannot stand arrogance and incompetence of this level.
Original review 5 stars: I really love Heirloom. One of my favorite brunch spots. They have vegan and gluten free items galore and I love their abundance of fresh juices and lemonades. BONUS: they serve 49^th Parallel coffee.

I had to ask the waiter what I should get, since I haven’t been to a vegetarian and vegan restaurant before. He said the linguine was his favourite, so I ordered the linguine. I’m so glad I trusted him because it was delicious!
The Avocado Frites were a bit of a disappointment, since a lot of people were raving about it here in Unilocal.It was good, but it wasn’t amazing.
I also got the Watermelon Chiller and I have to say I thought it was a bit sour. I wish it was sweeter.
The desserts were so good. I had the Honey Lemon Vanilla Cloud and Dark Chocolate Cake to share with friends. The banana on the cake made it so much better, although I though the ganache was a bit overwhelming after a few bites. It was on the heavy side, but the taste was perfect. The cloud was also really good. It wasn’t too sweet. I liked the cake more because I’m more of a chocolate person.
I really liked the ambience and even the music they played. I definitely would go here again!

I have heard about Heriloom for long time, however, my hubby doesn’t like rabbit dinner. Therefore, I never get a chance to check it out.
I took my mom to there for brunch on Sunday afternoon before shopping on Granville Street. We waited for 20 mins then got seated. However, it’s too noisy in the dining room.
The brunch menu selection was great, flavourful and delicious.
My mom had the mushroom benny, the mushroom well-​seasoned and tasty. I ordered the beet benny which healthy and in quality ingredients. Overall, the dishes were quite salty especially the sauce.
It is great spot for vegans or vegetarians and service friendly. If my hubby would try any green dish, I definitely will take him to Heirloom.
