Shine Nightclub is Vancouver’s ultra-chic nightclub and lounge in the historic Gastown district that’s been at the centre of an artistic and musical revolution for over a decade. From its award-winning design, legendary clubnights, and endless list of iconic performances, Shine Nightclub has been involved with building the careers of many of the city’s biggest musical figures.

Historique

Fondé en 2000.

Shine is located in one of the most historic buildings in the city. Both for it’s location at the start of Gastown, but also because of the long line of cabarets that have filled that space over the last century. Opened in 2000, it was one of the most uniquely styled venues in the city and the first to truly cater to the urban underground.

Hold on to your drinks tightly if you choose to go. Busboys like to throw away full beers. When asked if me and my friends were done we said you can take the waters away and we even pointed and showed which ones. We were sitting at the table. They started throwing away everything into the bucket. We tried to stop them but they had already tossed it. The beers were completely full. Maybe that’s how they make money?
Surprisingly the bouncers were very friendly.

I’ve been here for a few private parties and I appreciate the décor, however, on club nights it’s not the best club music and vibe feel in the city. It’s small so there isn’t much encouragement to dance.

We waited in line for an hour and a half, even though we had tickets. We watched as the early 20 year old event organizers let in girls they wanted to impress. Definitely won’t be going back!

One of the handful of clubs I have been to, and one of even fewer I have actually enjoyed, since moving back to Van. Blame it on my older brother for instilling a secret (not so secret?) love of hip hop in me. Alas, Saturday night, that it what you’ll hear. There are also two different rooms for added variety. Suffice it to say I had a lot of fun dancing and enjoyed the atmosphere and the music. While, thankfully, I didn’t find the crowd here overly lewd or «grabby» (to descibe the clientele at other clubs as diplomatically as I can), the entire place was 100% packed and therefore extremely hot and stuffy. So breaks from dancing to get some air outside were required. But overall a lot of fun and if I am inclined to suggest a club in Vancouver, this would be on my top 5 list.

Firstly, the line-up situation was ridiculous– we got there early and they held up letting people in for no discernible reason, except maybe because it was free cover until 10:30. There was no one there and they made everyone wait. Poor form. Pissed me off. The music (awesome DJs playing old school west coast hip hop) was good, the crowd was not. (not exactly, shall we say, the cream of the crop.) The club seemed to go from empty to sardine can in 45 minutes. It seems to be *very* popular, I can’t quite put my finger on the attraction…
I loved that they weren’t playing top 40 and it’s off the beaten club path. I would come back, but I’m afraid of killing myself on the flight of steps down. Holy crap! There are also a bunch of levels to go into the bathroom, to go to the other room… a total tripping hazard.
You may have to bribe the bouncer or wait in a ridiculous queue. No need to dress to impress (do not wear your heels, ladies. The steps really are treacherous.).

Only club in Van I can actually stand. I have been here for one of their electronic nights and on Friday for this hip hop party they had. Both were REALLY fun. Good music, decent croud-minus the obnoxious break dancer who takes up the quarter of the floor, and drinks here are pretty standard (6.50). I would have given it a 4 but the fact that they have Red Stripe (HOORAAAY BEER) gives it a 5 in my book.
My club experiences in Vancouver have been terrible until I found this place. Hate the Roxy, Tunnel is terrible, and Bar None lives up to it’s name-there is a bar but if you ask how many other people are in there, the answer is none.
Also if you get here before 11 entry is fo freeeee

Word on the street was that some of my favourite local DJs were spinning here on a Friday night. (That’d be R-Lex, Pandemonium, Abasi, Glyn and Ceebas, for those who are curious.) So I decided to give Shine one more try, and I made sure to get there earlier this time so I wouldn’t get caught up in the line (s). My plan worked and I was able to walk in, get a hand stamp and dance the night away.
The club has two rooms, so one was a mish-mash of electro/hip hop/rock and the other was more housey-dance music, and both rooms have a bar in them, so you don’t have to worry about getting stuck in one room and trying to make your way back to the other to refill your glass. The drinks were pretty standard, it was $ 7 or so for a single highball, and the drink lineups moved pretty quickly. The ladies bathroom was amazingly clean, and some of the stalls actually worked! This is like a rare treasure in nightclubs!
I think the secret to Shine is to skip the pre-drinking at home and just show up early and avoid the hassle of lineups. This will help you from falling down the stairs when you get in too!

before my visit — as usual, got onto the
website to see if I could get onto the guest list, and they made it quick and easy. I received an email confirmation within a few hours for the same night (Saturday).
They advertised free cover before 11pm, which is unheard of in GasTown apparently… so we showed at 10.50pm and there was no line and the coat check folks even coat checked my lady friends’ boots so she could put on her dancing shoes…
We get in and the place was dead, but that didn’t stop us, the music was groovy and the bartenders smiling and quick with the service. The place filled up within the next hour, but the service stayed fast which was a definite bonus.
We wandered into the other room where the music was exactly the same — frankly, dissapointing. It was a much smaller space than the first room but it did have a decent size bar and 4 or 5 comfy-looking booths.
apparently, we weren’t supposed to be in there as it was a «private party» so once we left, we couldn’t return… the bouncers set up a rope and said that the party would be over in 30 minutes — yeah, that never happened. Just you tell us the truth meathead… and not leave us with that glimmer of hope.
We went into the club expecting to take advantage of the two different vibes at our leisure… not so much, just slightly disappointing.
The music was good, the crowd was super young and drunk but mostly friendly. Not completely my kind of music to dance to, but it was worth the experience. and the large bar tab.

I’ll be brief as there’s nothing I can add that hasn’t already been mentioned in other reviews:
— MUSIC — usually hip-hop, funk, soul & boogie and house and electronic in the smaller room (but I usually come on weekends, so this may change). Feels like you’re getting more bang for your buck with the two different vibes. The DJs and MCs are eye-level with the crowd and gets everyone moving.
— CROWD — fun, chill, mixed and here to dance and party. On the same night, I saw a large group of First Nations partying and a Japanese bachelorette party. Good times.
— DRINKS — Reasonably priced and you never have to wait too long to get the barkeeps attention at either bar in the both rooms. I even recall seeing some drink specials on occasion.
— VENUE — small but clean, never over-crowded and has a good vibe.
Good club with great music with a fun, chill crowd. A rare thing in Vancouver.

Coming from Toronto, I was happy to come across a club (and a club night) featuring a DJ that seemed to know what spinning rap and hip hop is all about.
I haven’t (yet) managed to outgrow my gangster-rap roots, so it was really refreshing to come across Shine in Gastown one Saturday night, and to hear some of my fave old-school tracks playing.
The space isn’t large, but the bouncers did a good job leaving those of us inside some breathing (and dancing) room. Two rooms had two different vibes going — up front was soul/funk/hip hop and the back room was all about RAP.
GREAT crowd and — the true mark of a successful club night, in my opinion — guys were allowed in wearing ball caps.
I’d definitely go again.

Situated on the corner of Water Street on the edge of Gastown, Shine is a funky little nightclub and a fantastic place to go for a night out.
They do a variety of nights, there’s an old school funk and hip hop night which plays some great tunes and other soul and R&B nights.
They have a large dancefloor and leather booth seating, but of particular note is the bright blue lighting which lights up the bar area, giving the place an almost ethereal quality.
Well worth a look if you want a great night out

I’ve been to a nightclub or two in my day and I have an internal radar for the type of people that attend at any given point. That being said, I am one of those people so it is clear that some of blame (or thanks!) needs to be given to the venue and the music playing. My friends and I went on a Saturday night, Big Sexy Funk with Jon H from Fort Knox Five, a favourite funky breaks artist that we had all seen numerous times before and whom was the main reason for our visit to Shine tonight.
The interior of Shine is relatively small with a back room behind the main DJ booth to accommodate more of the masses. Those masses include creepy jerks and degenerates that often come with the electronic crowd, certainly not everyone but it was obvious enough for me because I’ve seen this all before. Never mind that, the music was great, drinks relatively cheap for a Saturday (8.50 double hi balls) and no lineups!
Shine is open 7 nights a week with different music themes from reggae, hip-hop and oldies to funk, drum and bass and house.

Shine’s a fun little spot. Located on the corner where Cordova meets Water Street, it’s the site of a lot of misdealing and forgotten memories. The music played varies from day-to-day, with a number of special events regularly being hosted, from launch parties to guest DJs.
