The Slocan

Went in to watch the Stanley Cup Playoffs but when they turned the sound on it was delayed close to 5 seconds behind the picture. But I did really enjoy the food and it was reasonably priced. (I had the chicken souvlaki which was fresh, tender and flavourful, and came with yummy seasoned rice and Greek salad.) The service was good too, friendly and attentive. I would definitely go back for a meal (and to try their quite broad cocktail menu) but not to watch a game.

Not bad. Came here tonight with my brother and had nachos. We were all beered out so stuck to soda, but service was awesome. Super attentive without being pushy. Nachos were just… OK. lotsa cheese but had been under broiler maybe 30 seconds too long as lotsa hard bits. Jalapeños and olives as only toppings. Salsa and sour cream on side. OK portion but not as big as others places and for almost $ 15 maybe should be tad bigger. Impressed with tap list; lotsa BC beers. Will be back to try more of a meal soon. Oh, fantastic music. Really varied Playlist.

Their televisions run on the same cable feed. Owner has bad attitude and bad haircut.

It is 2.5. I ordered the beef liver and onion with smash potato on side. the entire portion is small, smash potato is small, the veggie was small. Is this a kids meal? liver is burned and harsh too.

Great local diner, rocking the neighbourhood meeting place vibe.
Complete with booths, brass bar accents and the mush mash of design styles…
Food is reasonably priced and good.
Service is friendly
They also open very early.

Came here for pancakes. This is the 3^rd time my boyfriend and I have been here. It has become our hang over food spot. Food is alright, nothing too special. They claim to have «fluffy pancakes,» but i find it to be inconsistent. Sometimes ill get nice fluffy pancakes, sometimes i get denny’s quality of oancakes service is on the slow/​terrible side. Since its seat yourself, sometimes the servers dont notice you entering and may sit at a table menuless and cuterly-​less for 5 minutes.

My sis and I didn’t go to the slocan expecting gourmet food but our experience was definitely on the «meh» side. It really seems to have gone downhill there yet the prices are pretty steep. Diner fare, but with a 13 dollar price tag (for lunch). And the food is mediocre at best. I had a montecristo sandwich, which was tasteless and made with processed cheese, with a side of potato salad likely made by GFS; my sis had a beef dip that was flavourless with a side of fries that were goodish. Our server is what solidified the 2 star experience – in fact I would give her 1 star: chewing gum loudly the entire time, slurping a large glass of milk, coughing into her hands which made us want to leave before our order even arrived, and making us wait a very long time to pay our bill even though the restaurant was nearly empty. Overall an unappetizing experience.

I have never been disappointed by The Slocan. It is one of my favourite places to go on the weekend. They have a lot to choose from and everything I have tried has been great. I love this place because it can accommodate big groups and you never have to wait to long for a table.
Plus, their Cesars are very cheap — which is great if you are hung over.

We have passed this place a million times and yesterday (Sunday) finally went in for brunch. It was pretty busy, which is usually a good sign. We seated ourselves and didn’t have to wait long to get water and menus. We order spinach/​artichoke dip, crab cake benny, breakfast burrito. Then we wait, and wait, and wait and wait. Waitress was overwhelmed, did not ever come over to let us know if our order was coming, forgotten, or what… I finally asked and was told, it’s coming. I asked if we could at least get the spinach artichoke dip first and she brought it a short time later. It was horrible. A greasy layer of cheddar over top of a salty gross gloup of runny artichoke dip in a tiny ramekin and tortilla chips out of a bag for $ 8.95. They must be laughing every time someone orders this. Then we wait some more and see another waitress trying to deliver our mains to another table nearby. We intercept our food. By this time we are really hungry so we just eat. The crab cake benny looked fine but the hollandaise was completely tasteless. The burrito was also ok. Both dishes came with mushy pan fried home fries which I think they are trying to make «roesti» style. Greasy and tasteless. We finish eating and after about 15 minutes of trying to get someone’s attention to get the bill we get up and pay the waitress at the computer terminal. There is a line up of people waiting for tables most of the time we are there and we just shake our head’s and ask «Whyyyy???» I tipped 15% anyway because I just felt very sorry for the whole place. Oh, and it was not cheap, although the place looks like it should be cheap. $ 40 for 3 plates of food, just water to drink.

A few times a year, I share a meal with this group. We’re there to visit and knit – slow service is fine – rude service rankles.
We arrive at ten – find a table for four, but we need to seat six. «Are other tables likely to come available?” – our server replies that several tables are finishing up. We agree to order our food after other friends arrive – hopefully, at a bigger table.
Another group leaves – we quickly move over – pull in a nearby, small table to complete our seating – three more friends arrive – we get down to knitting.
Fifteen minutes later, the dishes – stacked and pushed aside – haven’t been cleared – someone jokes about bussing our own table. A second server walks by – Are we in her section now? – «Excuse me. Could you please take away these dishes?»
«That’s what happens when you sit down at a dirty table.” – oops, we’ve broken a rule – hope we’re not in her section – she walks away – she’s not coming back.
Another ten minutes – the first server comes within calling distance – «Excuse me. Could you please take away these dishes?»
«How I am supposed to know that you’ve moved when you’re sitting at a table with dishes?” – damn, must be a big rule here – at least she’s coming back.
Server later apologizes – «It’s busy” – table cleared – we order our food – my order, the Heuvos Rancheros with hash browns and whole wheat toast – accidentally, with coffee.
My food comes without toast – I ask the third server about it – «You don’t get toast because your dish has [a small] tortilla.» Why am wearing the dunce’s cap? – menu says platters come with hashbrowns AND toast. I joke with friends about my Unilocal review.
The hashbrowns have hard pieces that I cannot chew through – taste of slightly rancid oil – coffee is weak and burned.
We want to pay – «I’ll bring you your bill” – singular. «May we have separated bills?» Server pulls a sour face – akin to being force fed lemons and raw onions together – «That will take fifteen minutes.» More grist for the review.
Server later apologizes – «It’s hard to separate on our old billing system.” – guess she could have asked ahead of time.
One returns from the bathroom – «Check it out for your review” – my first impression is the scent of old rag with an accent of mildew and stale urine – part of the old rag is stuck to the toilet seat – hairs adorn the toilet and sink area – gross.
Someone comments that service in this restaurant has recently tanked – to be fair, water and coffee refills were frequent – server thanks us for our business – we leave.

Came here for lunch with the wife. Wasn’t that busy. Took a long time to get our food and server seemed like she wanted to be someplace else. Burgers were kinda greasy but what I was expect from a diner. Overpriced for what you get, patty was thin and well done. Reminded me of something you would get at the PNE. Fries were crispy and thin style. If there were more fries on the plate I might have overlooked the underwhelming burger. Wife’s coleslaw was a pile of cabbage with hardly any dressing. Server had a habit of dropping/​slapping-​down dishes/​utensils/​cash machine/​receipt. Didn’t feel very appreciated for our patronage. Wish I could continue to support a local business. =(

Went to The Slocan this morning for breakfast with some friends. I love the fact that it opens at 6am. I love early everything. The service was really good.
I got the traditional Eggs Benny. Not the best I’ve ever had. They barely put any hollandaise and then have a charge for extra. It forces people to pay for something that should be a part of the service. But then I tasted the hollandaise and it tasted like heavy cream. It didn’t taste like hollandaise at all and was far too rich. Maybe that’s why they put so little on.
I did like the atmosphere and will definitely go back. But I will not ever have the Benny again.

I never been here for lunch or dinner.
Just visit here like 5 times for breakfast.
And very happy with the food and service

Burger was ok. Not sure if the extra Egg was worth the $ 4 upgrade from the regular.

What irked me that day was the rudeness of that one plad on plad hipsteresq waitress who had her friends over at the bar. I was in a bit of a fear cave after rippin zorko all night with the guys. We stumbled across the street for breakfast and Caesars. The Caesars hit the spot. I got your regular run of the mill bacon and eggs and toast. It was whatever. Ash got the turkey bacon avocado breakfast burrito. Tasted ok. The floors where dirty and the windows were all smudgy. Shout out to the industrial metal guy sitting by us. \m/

Know where you are going and you’ll be good. Food was just fine and what I expected. Diner food. Server was super accommodating to my «no meat» request for the breakfast special and offered pretty much extra of anything else I wanted in replace of it.
It would be nice if the veggie burger option wasn’t and extra $ 2 bucks though, let’s fine a way to make it the same price as the meaty ones.
Extra kudos for the way the server handled the elderly woman who was dining alone next to me. She was super sweet to her, patient, and helped her out the front door when she left. Nice.

My wife and I were in the «slocan» area and were looking for a yummy brunch place. She directed us over to the Slocan and it was our first time there.
Walking in we found there wasn’t really a very adequate «waiting» area, and the restaurant was buzzing and busy. A couple parties left and eventually we decided to just take a seat at the bar for our meal.
The décor is definitely dated. you can tell that there hasn’t been many «updates» to the place for a while, if that matters to you or not. For us, we judge our places by the food and service above all else.
This is where the slocan shined. In despite it being quite busy, I felt the service was good enough. Not amazing, but again, considering how many people were there, it was better than expected.
The food is what really sold me. I had a avacado bacon breakfast burrito and it was divine. Really tasty and fresh and cooked to perfection. My wife had a fish cake benny which was also very tasty.
Overall, if you’re going to stop in for a quick and dirty breakfast/​brunch, you really can’t go wrong.
We left full and our tummies were happy.

Patio is cool at this time of year, lots room. Can’t speak for the food, as i’ve been here for drinks, so can vouch for its friendly staff.

Another beautiful place for working-​class eats.
Parking is available in the back (some 5 spots), as well as the side streets.
The inside is really no frills — it’s like a beaten diner, with more mirrors.
Staff were friendly and quick. No complaints there.
I had the half-​rack of ribs ($ 15), which came with fries. The ribs were not the best I’ve ever had, but they were quite decent. Fries were fairly crispy, and the portion of salad was quite generous. My friend had the burger combo ($ 10) and said it was pretty decent.
I’ll be back again at some point.

Well that was a disappointment.
Not in the service though. The server was a doll but the disgusting dish of the cheapest food money could buy was definitely not something I’d like to experience again.
Seriously, how can one actually make Hollandaise sauce that is totally opaque– almost white and tastes like it came out of a chemical bath?
Our server had kindly replaced the eggs benny with a smile, but the dish I got instead was low quality and margarine laden. The jam for the toast looked like it was just jellied sugar water with food colouring added. Yuk. I felt sick for hours afterwards.
If Wal-​Mart had a restaurant, this would be the food they’d serve.
