Many people taking the Fenicular to Montjuic are probably looking for a place to have lunch before their adventure up the hill. Pepe is not that place. They had decent beer prices: E$ 3.50 for a large draft and E$ 1.50 for an Amstel bottle. If you read the previous review in Spanish, he also agrees that drinking is really where the appeal of this place ends. Their $ 6.99 menu del dia was suspiciously cheap, and they were out of the calamari romana rings that I wanted. The arroz negro that i ordered took forever and I’m pretty sure that our waiter had to make a trip to the store for some ingredients. During the 40 minute wait, my wife had a shocking experience in the ladies room: there was no toilet seat(sit on the bowl, prison-style), there was a roach crawling by, there was neither soap nor water, and the toilet didn’t flush. She was paralyzed and informed me that we were leaving immediately. Good thing that we never got our food. We paid for our beers and left. We wound up having a fine lunch at the Rincon Del Artists, which was right by the metro station.

This place is terrible. The food was poorly prepared(the Tomate and Atun salad used tinned tuna, the Papas Bravas tasted like steak fries – that is, soggy) and over-priced. The waiter did not know the menu, and when we ordered he would come back five minutes later to tell us that they were out of that item. Then we ordered something else, and five minutes later he came back to tell us that they were out of that, too. All the while he was trying to get us to order the hamburger, or the hot dog. He brought out the salad and papas(that was the only thing that we originally ordered that they actually had). When he tried pushing us to order what he thought that we should get, we said, «No thanks, we will finish our drinks and what you brought, and then move on». He then acted offended and with obvious irritation asked us why we were angry. We were not angry, just hungry and tired of playing a we have that/we don’t have that game. Lesson learned; tapas places on busy Barcelonan streets are basically small Denny’s in food preparation and quality. They are aimed at tourists that have gotten off of the cruise ship for the day.
