Some of the best service I’ve had(sat at the bar). Chips and salsa were great. Food was pretty good as well.

A great place that has become somewhat of a bi-weekly tradition. I love their papas and fajita tacos. Love ordering a margarita to help end the day off right!

Nothing really to brag about, just a good place if you are craving tex me food in the Big Country! They are known for their enchiladas, which are good, and they offer an array of salsa dips for the chips. Not bad, but do not expect unique or authentic dishes here.

The food is great, as well as the drinks. Our server was very good; however, the floors and tables around us were filthy! The entire time we were eating, there were 3 – 5 people standing behind the hostess stand, leaning against the window and cabinet. I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt them to grab a broom or towel and clean up some. Teamwork people!

It takes a or for me to give a place 5 stars. The main reason I am giving it this rating is the amazing bar that was recently remodeled. It’s very spacious and looks amazing. They are running the best happy hour specials in town by far right now. Sunday to Friday from 3 – 7. I have to say the bar tender who took care of us last night did very well. He gave me samples of a few things and was on top of refills. I will definitely be going to the bar again soon.

Out first time eating at an Abuelo’s, despite living in west Texas almost 2 years. Abel was polite, professional and went above and beyond giving us the best customer service we’ve ever experienced at any restaurant out here. Speaking as someone who’s been in retail and customer service for over a decade, Abel is the kind of employee that should be groomed for management. The food was pretty good too! ;)

Some of the worst TexMex I’ve ever eaten. Come on Abuelo’s, we’re in Texas. Ordered carnitas. Bland & tasteless. Refried beans were runny & disgusting. The chips were good & the habanero sauce was good. Queso tasted canned. Will not go back.

Mmmmmm abuelos was so tasty, the inside is huge. Make reservations ! They give you these tasty dips with chips. We shared a gigantic enchilada plate that came out on a 17inch turkey plate hahahahah Minus the little table space from all our stuff it was good food !

We were here for ACU homecoming and opted to visit one of our old favorites. Its been 15 years and was still delicious. We ordered the nachos and fajita’s and everything was really good. Thank you for staying consistent!

I really wanted to not like this place because it’s a chain, but I have to admit the place was clean, lively, service was spot on, and my chile relleno was pretty awesome. Plus, the lunch special was very well priced. Get it Abuelo’s!

Texas and great Mexican food are synonymous ideas. I grew up here, but I’ve also lived in two other states, and the assumptions I always come across from people I meet elsewhere is that A) We still commute on horseback in some parts, and B) we dine on nothing but chicken fried steak and glorious tex-mex. I know it’s silly, but people all over the country seem to recognize us for our distinct and flavorful food. We certainly seem to believe we’re set apart, and Truth be told, I’ve had great Mexican food all over, but I’m still not inclined to disagree with anyone. Tex-Mex really is something special. That makes Abilene something of an Anomaly; although it’s a well known Texas town with a large population and rich history, I’ve found it difficult to locate a Mexican restaurant worthy to represent its state’s legacy of great food. I’ve tried nearly everything and I’m not impressed. Luckily, there are some decent places, but unfortunately, they’re chains. Abuelo’s is an example of this. It’s not bad at all for being a corporate restaurant. There’s a bit of a gourmet feel to the restaurant’s food and décor, but at its core it’s still the same messy, delicious Mexican food we all know and love. Despite a few other lesser chain restaurants opening recently, this place is still busy most of time. It’s not unusual to have to park at Hobby Lobby and walk over. The margaritas are pretty great if your interested in imbibing a little bit. I recommend grabbing a pitcher to share with friends. The chips and salsa scenario is very near perfect. The mild house salsa has a sort of weird canned tomato and not much else taste. The medium red salsa is superb, roasted peppers, nice and tangy. They also give you a green sauce, which is pretty sweet but has an excellent roasted jalapeño and pineapple taste, and even though I prefer heat, I eat this stuff up. You absolutely must order the Inferno salsa, though. It doesn’t come with the standard salsa trio, so you’ll have to ask for it. They’ll try to bring you a La Popular status snort of it, so make sure you tell them you want a large cup like the other salsas come in. It’s a habanero sauce, pretty hot, but after you get used to it you won’t care. It’s so good. I highly recommend the dip sampler as an appetizer. You get their signature queso, a Diablo queso(queso mixed with spicy meat sauce) and a creamy avacado dip. Honestly the appetizers is what I care about the most here because I’m usually full and beyond happy by the time the food comes out. My wife and I usually split an order of beef fajitas which are surprisingly great for a chain that isn’t known for tex-mex. Great tasting beef, juicy chicken, sautéed onions and peppers. It will fill you up quick. I should clarify, we split the fajitas for one. It’s more than enough groceries to make three fat tacos each if you utilize all the tasty fillings and condiments you’re given. Order the fajitas for two if you’re rolling with a small army. If I’m not feasting on fajitas with my wife I get the special plate with three cheese enchiladas and couple fried eggs on top. Fantastic! I actually don’t care for the rice and refried beans here. They’re not bad but not great either. I recommend ordering the cheesy papas or the spinach soufflé side. I’m a bit of a hypocrite because even though I know those sides are superior, I still get rice and beans. Habit I guess. It doesn’t feel right eating mashed potatoes and spinach with enchiladas. Enchiladas without rice and beans, for me, is like having a cheeseburger without French fries. I personally don’t want to know anyone who is okay with that situation. End it with an order of Flan and you can’t go wrong. Though you likely won’t have room for dessert. I’m going to give this place 4 stars because they do a pretty good job at recreating a dependably delicious and nice experience every time I visit. Not nearly the best in Texas, but certainly some of the best Mexican food in Abilene.

This place was really good. The service was excellent, never went without a basket of chips, which is huge for me! The menu has a lot on it, not a ton for vegetarians but I managed well. I got veggie fajitas which were really awesome. The plate of veggies was HUGE and had zucchini, squash, mushrooms, onions, peppers, carrots, all sizzling hot and cooked well. It came with two sides as well and the option of corn or flour tortillas. It also came with UNLIMITED sour cream and guacamole, which is amazing because where do you get unlimited guac at? The dish was only $ 12 something and super worth it. The restaurant itself is huge, cool décor and clean place and bathrooms. Would definitely recommend going here for good and fair priced food!!!

There are few times you go to a restaurant and everything is on point. When that happens, I usually attribute it to «that one time it was awesome» syndrome. However this abuelos, I have been to twice in one week — once on my way to Austin, and again on my way back. Fajitas were sizzling both times and the waiters were funny, nice and quick. Great shaken margaritas.

We went around 1 pm on a Saturday, calling ahead to be placed on a wait list. We were promptly seated and I was quite pleased we would again enjoy the service from Josh, a new waitstaff. My husband wanted a smaller entrée, but didn’t know what a Chimichanga was nor how spicy the shredded beef inside. Josh asked another employee, a lady I neglected to get the name of. After a little discussion, she offered to bring a sample to him. Returning with a small bowl containing a big bite of the chicken, pork, and beef! All 3 were great, and he chose the shredded beef in a flour tortilla smothered in queso, with charro beans and quacamole as sides. My chicken fajitas for one came out steaming hot, as were the charro beans with big pieces of bacon and steamed corn tortillas. Josh remembered the special request for whole charred jalapenos and sliced avacado on the side. He kept the tea and Dr Pepper coming. You rock, Josh! Leftovers always reheat well. 99% of the time, we are very pleased with Abuelo’s food and waitstaff.

I really cannot(for the life of me) see what all the thrill is about… this place has inconsistent service.. Manages to bring 2 totally differently different version of the same plate on the same table… SERIOUSLY??? NO way this can constitute REAL Tex-Mex cuisine that deserves a 5 star rating! It is a consolidated chain and it can be seen in the lack of love, key ingredient in the perfect dish. It feels just like costumers are but a number and therefore do not deserve the pampering and the respect they are rightfully owed. And, yet unespicably, i have never seen this establishment less than crazily full(oftentimes resulting in a wait to seated). Price is high if compared with the quality and quantity of the food. I have tried it on several occasions and always found something oddly offbeat..

If Taco Bell and Olive Garden had one too many vodka-redbulls while attending a self help conference and then bumped uglies in a dark alley, Abuelos would be their bastard child. This place is the size of a mall food court, oddly and elaborately decorated but so completely lacking in personality that it’s a wonder more lawsuits haven’t been filed on behalf of diners drowning themselves in the bland and soulless guacamole. Or in one of the Olympic sized water fountains scattered among the fake palm trees. The food is profit maximizing rubbish which neither tastes good nor nourishes and will have you wishing you’d never walked through the door. The good? The staff were marvelous and attentive.

First off, I’ll try not to be too bias because I grew up in Midland where my family and I use to eat here all the time. It’s been several years since I’ve eaten here and I left with fond memories. When I came into town and saw there was an Abuelo’s and I got excited. I had to try it to see if my memories matched my expectations. On my one visit here this restaurant nailed it! This is a must try if you are in town! This isn’t traditional Mexican food but there is an abundance of choices offering amazing combinations of Tex-Mex. This is a great spot to bring a date or your family for a nice dinner or lunch. When you walk in the door the atmosphere teleports you from central Texas to a Mexican vacation destination with palm trees, fountains, lots of colors and paintings. Pros — Electronic ordering for appetizers and desserts — The electronic device at the table also offers games to pacify energetic children — Portions are Texas size — There are soo many choices to choose from — Great Service — Large space great for groups — Fairly priced food — Chips and Salsa are served with 3 different types of salsa — Very clean restaurant Cons — They are not open before 11 am and do not offer brunch items

Abuelo’s is always a safe choice when it comes to mexican food. Parking is a little limited which is always common with Abuelo’s as they love to put them in strip malls. Ordered mucho margarita and Durango burrito. Everything was as expected. Rice was a little strange. Usually like to take some risk, but went with safe bet. Great service.

Open seating if you come early. No waiting. Seating in the bar is open. Waiter was taking order from us as we were seated. The bar has happy hour, if you are inclined. Chips, salsa and Queso is great. I prefer the old style salsa to their new trio. Matamoros is a favorite of the family, I like the Manjar with over easy eggs!

First off this is a pretty classy place that you can take a date or have a family lunch. Nice décor. The service was good. They were semi busy and didn’t have enough waiters but someone helped our waiter with getting our drinks etc. Very good team work. We tried all of the salsa — 4 different versions. The tomatillo salsa was super fresh! We liked it! Get the cheesy potato side! amazing! My wife had the fajitas and said they were really good. I got a large burrito but I was to full after eating all the sides and chips to try it yet! For a chain, they do a good job of making your experience very pleasant. Recomended
