To establish my bone fides let me say I’ve done my time in several gelaterias near the Pantheon, in Rome. On our first visit to Café Fudgelato we tasted across the selection, with the pumpkin pie flavor winning HB’s heart. I liked all that I tasted, from chocolates to berries to their more exotic creations. The wait staff was excellent. We liked it so much that we had them pack a pint with several flavors and ate in the store. Give it a try. On another visit the counter-person was rude, curt, and lazy. Tainted the entire experience, and makes us reluctant to return. That’s a shame.

Damn you fudgelato! I am cursed. I can’t go out to eat in Alameda without ending up at fudgelato. No matter how full I am I convince myself that the walk from dinner to gelato has burned enough calories to justify a dessert. Most of the time I can resist the temptation but every time I walk in to fudgelato they have a new and amazing gelato flavor to tempt me. Often times they have two flavors making it even harder! Don’t they know I’m an indecisive Gemini?!? My curse started with the Ibarra, which is the brand of my favorite Mexican hot chocolate. I am always keeping my eye out for delish things featuring Mexican hot chocolate. Any time I see it on a menu I order it. Most times I am disappointed but not here. Fudgelato delivered– they captured the flavor perfectly. It was so good we went back for a repeat visit less than a week later. On another occasion we brought my Dad, who typically hates ice cream, he thinks it’s too cold. We had just had a huge steak dinner but after sampling all the yummy flavors he had to go with the small cup of mango sorbet. This place does an amazing job mastering the flavor of each gelato. They are on par with Gelateria Naia. But what really sets them apart is the excellent staff, who are incredibly patient and helpful. They provide the best mixing suggestions and don’t even bat an eye when you ask for your 5th sample. In fact they even suggest what your 6th sample should be. Keep an eye on my quick tips to see what the latest flavors are! These gelatos are worth their weight in calories. Sidebar– unlike most ice cream and gelato places this one has plenty of seating.

Fudgelato is a deceiving name because they don’t serve fudge with gelato… wouldn’t you think they did from the name? They also have a lunch menu(sandwiches) and tons of candy(both packaged and by the pound). I got the Affogato which wasn’t that great because the coffee isn’t that great and they load it up with more whip cream than gelato. I also tried the cherry and hazelnut gelatos which wasn’t as smooth or rich in flavor. I did see the workers deal with a flamboyant, slightly difficult woman in a very patient manner so it was nice to see good customer service.

Staff is super friendly, gelato is yummy. There’s also troves of candy, but all in all it’s nothing reallllyyyy special – like a normal café. But I’ve never tried the paninis yet so… Maybe this eating will change.
