Greg did a fantastic job mounting a set of replica tires onto the wooden rims of an antique bicycle for me. The price was great, the work was great and he got the whole thing done quickly so that we could have the bike ready in time for an upcoming event.

I don’t know where to start… After seeing someone ride«Penny Farthing» on the 4th of July in the Danville Parade I wanted one, I did some research and found Greg’s Shop. I was on ether the hold time I was there. What a cool cat! He hand makes a true work of art history that one can enjoy almost immediately. I didn’t believe him when he said«I will have you riding it in 10 minutes» WELL, HEDID! And I was sold! I am a proud owner of a 52 bone shaker! The best part of the whole experience was when I was riding EVER person that saw couldn’t help but smile and wave. Greg, thanks for making people smile!

Very pleased that I found this shop. Greg was able to retire our family heirloom tricycle the way it is supposed to be done using materials/equipment that is quite rare these days. Very nice guy and it was very cool to see his shop. Wish I would have known about this place when we needed to replace the tire last time.

Heard about this place years ago and always wanted to see if penny farthing bicycles really were made in Alameda, so I dropped by today(calling beforehand is recommended though). Greg was extremely friendly and showed us around a bit. We found he’s essentially the only commercial maker of these bicycles in the world, custom hand makes everything on site, and if you see any of these unique bicycles out there, it’s more than likely they came from here. I’d love to own one of these someday… Just gotta find the space for it!

Greg’s shop is a treasure of the Bay Area. This is way more than a bicycle shop. Greg is a craftsman, an inventor, a historical expert and an instructor. He is a reservoir of skills that have almost vanished and an irreplaceable resource for antique bicycle fans. He can hand-build amazing machines and he takes the time to teach you how to ride them. When I went to his shop he set down his welding and gave me a tour of his workshop, explained the details of his new machines and showed me his collection of originals, he taught me how to ride a highwheel bike, assembled a new one for me, took it for a test ride, helped me get it on the rack of my car, and corresponded with me afterwards for more tips and advice. Considering that his machines are hand-crafted and totally unique, his prices are very good. He maintains an active web site, a busy Facebook page, and he responds right away on email and phone. This makes him a hub for enthusiasts and a center of the community. If you have any flicker of interest in this sort of thing you should check it out.

This place is so cool– they make«Penny farthings” — those cool old bicycles with the huge front wheel and the tiny rear wheel. Not for the dillettente, or at least not for the poverty-striken– their smallest, cheapest penny-farthing, the«Boneshaker,» costs over $ 800. My favorite piece of theirs is the Boneshaker, and I hope to own one someday. But that is not their only product: they also make trikes, pedicabs, recumbent bikes, tandem bikes, and hand-cranked trikes for handicapped or cross-training riders– all kinds of exotic custom bicycle-like beasts. They also built the transports for the Will Smith movie«Wild Wild West» including«Loveless Stagecoach»(the villain’s vehicle) and the motorized Penny Farthing.
