South Shore Liquors is yet another convenience store around the beach, but this one really isn’t worth visiting. Their $ 10 minimum credit charge wouldn’t be so bad if everything weren’t so expensive. Plus, the cashier here is kind of a jerk — he’s the type of guy who is pissed that you’re even there in the first place. Not a good impression.

Have observed, over the past couple years that I’ve been in the neighborhood, a real moodiness, old products, high prices. And no real customer appreciation, even to those who are not the village drunks and who regularly buy from them. Sure, retail is hard, they deal with some crazy customers, they struggle as non-english speaking folks in an(almost) all English neighborhood. But they are RUDE. Consistently. To EVERYONE. Followed by 10 seconds of sweetness to keep you buying. Never again, so sick of their behavior. And all the BS. They put other ma-n-pa shops to even more shame!

If they had negative stars, this place, in my opinion, would deserve MINUS five stars… just because of the husband and wife who run the place. They can be the rudest shop owners you may ever encounter… and, you never know from day to day what either of their moods will be… One day, they just barely grunt at you no matter what your transaction; then, the next, they may actually say«thank you»(rare in my experience). Most typically, they are stone faced with everyone and almost act like they are doing you — the customer — a favor by selling you something. My last straw was this past Saturday, My partner went in to buy me a Saturday Chronicle and by mistake, picked up the early edition of the Chronicle. within 5 minutes I returned and asked to exchange the paper(involved the woman making change because the Sunday paper is $ 3 and the Saturday $ 1)… Well, you would have thought that I had asked her to give up her child or something. she slammed around behind the counter and literally screamed at me, «You read the paper and now you want to return it!!!» I denied this and explianed the mistake that my partner had made… to no avail. She kept ranting at me !!! WOW — I kind of expected a reaction, but not an EXPLOSION. finally, I said, «You’ve been a bitch to me before, and now here you go again. are you going to exchange the papers or not?» And, she reached into the till and made the change and slammed it on the counter. My parting words: «Thanks — I’ll never set foot in this place again… and, I am going to write this up on Unilocal. True to my word — here’s a MINUSFIVE star rating with my recommendation… go anywhere else for you cigs, lottery and liquor… these people think their shit doesn’t stink and don’t deserve Alamedans’ business !!!

A liquor store with a fairly good selection! As I perused the aisles, I noted that they stock some higher end bottles of scotch, although for perhaps a couple of dollars more than elsewhere, and you can get some of the larger-production micro-brewed beer by the bottle. Ain’t that nice? I thought so.
