I come here all the time, great pancakes, chicken bull sandwich is out of this world. Also in my opinion, the breakfast sausage is unparalleled

Looks can be very decieving. Dan’s Place has great food, good coffee and a little entertainment while you sip on your cup of joe. Great little spot.

Fine place for breakfast. I had one of the specials, which means I got three eggs, a mess of Hash(canned corned beef variety) and a mass of home fried potatoes. I ordered the eggs medium and expected the yolks to be partially liquid & that is what I got. I requested that the hash be given a good crust on the griddle & got that. The weakest part of the meal was the home fries– the potatoes were well cooked(underdone homefries are an abomination) and had a good griddle crust but there was little if any onion and no other seasoning– a dose of Paprika could have helped. Another matter– since there are already potatoes in the hash that makes for a LOT of potatoes on the plate. Still, not bad for just under ten bucks. A HEADSUP though… .My table companion had a cup of coffee which the waitress offered to warm up. When the bill came he found he’d been charged for that second cup. That is NOT good practice– traditionally diner coffee is a loss leader– what you loose on free refills you gain on the food. I had a cup of tea for .75 since $ 1.45 is pretty steep for a glass of milk(diners are known for having low prices on the entrees but jacking prices on the extras)

Nicest owners around, who cook and serve very, very tasty diner fare. Fresh, flavorful food. Great space, great ambiance, nice local clientele. Menu’s not too long, as it should be.

It was cheap… definitely a hole in the wall. We ended up there after three other breakfast places were overflowing with people. I was in town for a trip. The waitress was nice and I generally love to give these sort of places 5 stars. However, the french toast was HORRIBLE. It tasted like eggs and was completely mushy. We were worried about getting salmonella afterwards. The waitress didn’t come back to check if we were alright and just came back to give us our check. Seemed like it was totally rushed and the place only had 2 other people in it. I literately felt so sick afterwards that I’m not sure I’d try it again if I was back in town. Disappointing because places«like this» are generally awesome finds!

Straight forward traditional breakfast and lunch counter. The food is fresh. The prices are fair. The conversation is what you make it. Mostly locals, and those who appreciate it. The corned beef hash is awesome Portions are ample. Coffee is hot.

Dont judge a book by its cover. Best diner in Albany hands down. Best bacon around Food is not expensive at all! Everything is cooked right in front if you. Great food. You may even catch one or two funny jokes from the old timers that hang around and make everyone laugh.

Albanys best greasy spoon. The place is narrow and worn out– but the staff is always great and the food even better. The Emmy Bull Burger is my go-to hangover cure. Make sure you’ve got time to sit and enjoy your meal– there’s typically one waitress and one cook. They’re always friendly but understandably stressed. Be kind to them. Dans is also cash only

I am going to be using the words«dirt» and«grime» a bit more than i normally would in a restaurant review. DONOTLETTHATDETRACTYOU… There are two kinds of diners that I know of. The first are the diners with silver/chrome structures with menus as long as the Gideon Bible that are open 24 hours that you can get whatever you want whenever you want. And then there is the other kind of diner. The diner with weird hours that has a small menu and is caked with dirt and grime. You can see the wear and tear, both on the inside and out. This diner is the latter. And that is ok. Because they do breakfast right here. As everyone says here, I got something with the sausage, and it is pretty cool how they do it. They take it out of the casing and cook it until it gets a nice char on the outside. But the star was the homefries. They reminded me of really underdone fries from Nathans, and I mean that in the best possible way. They were slightly crispy with a full potato flavor. They could have used a bit more salt, but they were awesome.

Excellent joint. Great food, great value for the money. And not very much money! And my wife doesn’t like when she comes out smelling like the food cooking, and she commented that her clothes do not smell. So that’s good news all around! I had two eggs, bacon and some awesome crispy hash browns, my wife had the same. Perfect on all counts. Our son had a short stack of pancakes, and the chef made them like Mickey Mouse ears. Very cute. The waitress was super nice, played with our son, and still provided excellent service!

This place is delightful. I first came here three years ago before I moved to Albany and had a great experience. I now live in the area and returned to find that Dan’s is just how I left it — a greasy spoon serving up solid food with friendly customer service. On my most recent visit, I stopped in around 11:30 a.m. on a Sunday. The place was moderately busy, but there is a lot of seating(40+ spots), so there wasn’t a wait. I sat at the bar and was greeted by a waitress within a few minutes. We ordered coffee, two eggs with bacon and home fries and the corned beef hash. Portions are huge and the food is solid. Our bill was for $ 18.00 and they’re cash only. I suggest sitting at the bar on your visit so you can see your food and all the other orders being made. The next time I come, I’m going to try the breakfast sandwich(comes on a huge kaiser roll) or the pancakes.

Others have said it better than me, but here’s my thoughts… This is an old school narrow diner, its like stepping back in time. Everything is well worn but functional. Prices are very reasonable, service is friendly, and the locals all know about this place and frequent it. The food is simple but good and real. All the normal breakfast selections including pancakes and muffins. The sausage and hash are the real standouts as they are left to crisp on the grill. You can order the hash extra crispy, though you will have to wait for time to do its magic. Burgers are good as are the chicken burgers. They have homemade specails and sides, check the whiteboard when you go in. This is a worn and sketchy looking place on a worn block of Western(just East of Quail), on the edge of tee student section. but I have not seen or heard of any problems in the area and feel comfortable going there at all times. Cash only,

I really enjoyed coming here. It is great so because it is so close to my home. The atmosphere was wonderful. People were very friendly and it seemed as if everyone knew each other. Often calling one another by their first name. It is a small cozy space. It is a greasy spoon. The food was very affordable and had large portions. The regulars were what really made this place stand out an out of the ordinary. I liked how comfortable the customers were as if they had all knew one another for years. I over heard conversations that were very open and at times a bit wild. There was a discussion between two tables, back and forth they were discussing that a local woman had just bought a strip bar in the area. They spoke as they were reading about it in the Times Union. It was really fun watching people interact with one another. Although it was my first time there, people were very friendly and I felt extremely welcome there.

Went in again recently. Ordered 2 bacon egg and cheeses. Only 1 egg on and 1 piece of cheese on each, for some reason. For over 4 $ a sandwich I will not be returning. Robbery.

Classic greasy spoon diner. This place has been on my list for god knows how long and I finally made the trip to Albany to try it. Its small, old fashioned, and takes cash only. We sat at the counter and I watched as they made my sausage and cheese omelet. First they cut open the sausage links and removed the casing, then they let it sear on the grill with a press. At the same time they are cooking the eggs separately. Finally they place the whole sausage links on top of the eggs, add cheese and wrap the eggs around them. A very interesting approach. Also check out the Chicken Bull. The menu is pretty simple but they do a good job and the prices are decent.

«A Greasy Spoon with a View» by Josh K. Sitting right at the counter, with a cup of fresh coffee at hand is the preferred way to enjoy Dan’s Place Two, a very small, cramped but homey diner and local Albany institution on a sketchier section of Washington Avenue. While seated at the counter, one gets a brilliant view of the masterful grill chef expertly cooking up greasy breakfast staples. He does the frying with such relative passion and ease, that it is like watching an artist paining on a mural. It is a beautiful vista as you gaze upon the busy front end. On the grill itself, there are more than ten things going on at the same time, and each item is executed flawlessly and with attention to the details. My sight is drawn first to the couple of sausage links that are perfectly butterflied and pressed with an iron-like device to get a glorious crusted coating. Then, corned beef hash is scooped out of a monstrous can and piled up high on the left corner of the grill which will also get the same grease-coated treatment; while on the opposite corner, mounds of peeled and sliced potatoes will become fine-crusted home fries flavored by sizzling bacon resting on top. Meanwhile, in the lower corner, a homemade blueberry muffin is split and grilled alongside slices of French toast that have been hand-battered while three different styles of eggs are being cooked in the center. Dan’s place opens at 1am on Saturdays and very early on other days. This is something I am ashamed to admit I never knew about. However, this fact brings me comfort as well as regret for the terrible things I used to eat not knowing Dan’s was always around as a far more efficient early morning alcohol in the liver sponge. A couple words of advice: Bring cash, don’t swear, and definitely don’t bring a vegetarian.

Dan’s Place Two is not the sprawling Greek style diner with an enormous menu. It is an old school diner car style diner complete with the curved metal ceiling and a fridge from the 1950’s. Seating involves some well worn stools lining a long counter separating you from the griddle. It’s the type of place that Johnny Rockets is based off of. Unlike Johnny Rockets there is nothing shiny or fake about Dan’s Place Two.
This is a no nonsense cash only working man’s diner that serves up eggs, bacon, sausage, and black coffee with real conversation. Shooting the breeze with the owners and the other patrons is optional but always entertaining. Going there on a weekday morning is honestly like being in an episode of Cheers. The claim to fame is the Emmy Bull Burger which is just an awesome burger topped with bacon and a fried egg. The fries are simply perfect. This dish gets my strongest recommendation for any burger lover. Bottom Line: The Incredible Emmy Bull Burger eaten at the counter is a memorable experience not to be missed.

Consider me a fan of Dan’s I haven’t been that often, but I really liked what I saw when I was there. A regular customer came in and asked for«the usual» to which the big guy working the griddle pulled out a gallon can of corned beef hash from the fridge. The hash got the griddle treatment which seems to produce a miraculous crust on anything it touches. Even this stuff that came out of a can looked amazing once it was cooked. So did the potatoes. But sitting at the counter and watching things get cooked, it was the sausage that stole my heart. It will be the sausage that brings me back in here. That, and the integrity of the place. Let me explain. Another fellow asked for two eggs over easy. While the cook was clearly an expert, occasionally errors are made. One of the yolks broke when the eggs were flipped. So a perfect third egg was quickly cooked, and brought to the table to make up for the damaged one, along with an apology. This is one of our real deal diners. I love it. And we are lucky to have it. If I lived closer to Dan’s, I would go more often. But I’m really looking forward to getting back. Maybe when it gets colder and I need to pack on some winter weight.
