If you use a lot of packaged and canned goods, it’s well worth the drive. Substantial savings.

I adored this little store. It is run by an elderly Amish couple Lester and Fanny Detweiler. It appears to be just an average, smaller, white ranch style home on the outside. Contrary to what it may look like you do NOT go in through what looks like the front door. You enter by walking up the wooden ramp on the left side of the house. Upon entering you will note it is not lit by conventional modern methods. The lighting is mostly from a couple sky lights and just a couple small gas lanterns. You can really feel the heat coming off of them, so don’t get too close, especially if you are wearing hair spray or anything of the like! LOL You will also notice a distinctive smell. I personally love this smell. It is because there are many many different spices being sold there. Being that it is a bulk food store, do not expect spices and such to be in fancy containers. They are purchased in bulk and then they are bagged up and priced accordingly… This place also carries different types of flours. They are also bagged up and priced accordingly. They carry different dried beans, rice, and pastas. They offer different types of mixes including biscuits, gravies, soups, dips, and pies. The also offer some practical home items. Some of those items include hand tools like juicers, coffee bean grinders, and cooking utensils. They carry fresh eggs, that are HUMANELY raised, so you can feel GOOD about your purchase rather than contribute to the HORRID practices of the industrial farmed egg producers. When you check out, you will notice the register IS operated by electricity. Ok, I know that’s not so remarkable, but here’s the amusing part… In order to get the electricity, they have it hooked up to a car battery on the floor! This same car battery also powers the electric scale Fanny needs to weigh her products out on as she packages them for sale. It is a quiet and peaceful little store. I enjoy taking the hour and a half trek out there. I always have a pleasant experience and find what I need. This little store is really worth checking out if you are a cook/bake from scratch kind of person.
