i really don’t know if it is a 2 or 3 star joint but i gave them the benefit of the doubt as last night i went there after finding cordona’s closed at 7:05. they must have run out of hot food(they are becoming quite popular). i had promised the girlies(addie and kenz), something yummy and soft(kenz had her palette expander put in yesterday — my poor baby. and needed something soft to eat.) like their delicious meatballs. when they were closed i went next door to sunny’s to see if there was anything in the freezer that would suffice. nope. only frozen banquet fried chicken. before i reached the freezer however i was stopped by the enticing display of jesus clocks on the front table. $ 2. sweet. i got one for robert because i know that no matter How cheesy, he will put it up. after grabbing some milk so i could at least make some mac and cheese at home, i turned to check out and while my eyes usually skim over the deli display case here, i did notice a big pile of those ‘meat’ pies. and while i know they are of questionable origin, every once in a while they hit the spot — like a sub at 3 am in college(i can still hear our sounds of delight over the mayo and lettuce and meat and bread concoction from the gods, or subway as the case may be.) so i got them each one for $ 1.25 and took my goodies home(in my own bag thank you very much. i am getting so much better at remembering to bring them along.) sheesh. that was very rambling. my point is that the store, while a bit grungy and yellow(sunny), is still a great little neighborhood provider. of things.

Kind of like the multiethnic coffee place in Hal Hartley’s movie«Henry Fool.» Everyone in the neighborhood invariably stops here for a quick snack or hair extension or sandwich or phone card or giant white t-shirt or bottle of tonic water or forty ouncer. Sometimes it’s open when the sign says it’s closed. You wouldn’t buy vegetables here, but you’d look at them and wonder who would. It’s always busy at Sunny’s.
