If you really, really empathize with Occupy Albany and attend the General Assemblies but are too old and rheumy and economically comfortable to camp out, you can crash here if you’re a member. Also open to absolutely everyone on First Friday nights. Wander around, check out the bygone clubby ambiance in which most of us won’t regularly indulge. There must be a German word for nostalgia directed toward something we’d never had.

We went to the University Club on November 4 for 1st Friday. Great music from Sonny & Perley in the(downstairs, casual) Grille Room from 8 — 10 p.m. A friend was looking to try a fancy cocktail, and thoroughly enjoyed a Sidecar! The specials that evening included surf and turf(steak with bacon-wrapped scallops) and whitefish en papillote — both were $ 19.95 and included a salad of fresh greens! The Club accepts cash or credit cards on the first Friday of each month as part of Albany’s celebration of the arts and culture — 1st Friday. Upcoming performers include«Off the Record» on 12⁄2 and«Mother Judge» on 1÷6÷12 — performances are free!

Was here for my former bosses retirement party… cocktails then buffet upstairs. the service was very good, but the food was atrocious! Cold chicken and bland potatoes. The appetizers ran out and were never replenished… just seemed very so-so. I would expect the members would demand more from a private club. Our event took place in September… someone mentioned a new chef… so maybe better now. Since this is a private club… shouldn’t it be listed somewhere other than restaurants?

Open to the public on First Fridays and special events. The new chef is superb! The club also features a bowling alley and billiard room for after dinner fun.

One of my dear and beloved friends from book club Sylvia retired after nearly 4 decades of teaching at SUNY Albany. She was in the classics department and speaks fluent Latin and Greek, and is a wealth of knoledge about the ancient world. We met for cocktails on a Saturday and then on to a buffet lunch upstairs. Chicken and fish was served along with some past and rolls. It was a lovely retirement dinner in honor or a long and distinguished career. Sylvia not only put herself through Oxford, she raised a lovely daughter by herself and found time to advocate for living without a car, riding a bike, walking and taking public transportation as she has done her whole life. She has never owned a television and reads everything in sight. It was legendary what a popular professor she was on campus on campus. She is quirky and down right weird to the huddled MTV masses but to those who know her she is a diamond.

The University Club or UC is a private club open to men and women who have graduated from a college or university and are sponsored by at least two current members. It is open weekdays and nights and on weekends only for private parties. It has guest rooms, a billiards lounge, four bowling alleys, squash courts, and a gym. It has a formal dining room and a more casual grille. The food is excellent and the service is top notch. It is a perfect place to conduct business and to entertain clients. It also sponsors several social functions that are great for your families and friends. Take a minute to check it out. It also has reciprocal privileges at private clubs in New York City and most major cities throughout the United States. I use them when instead of staying at a hotel. It’s like going to a home away from home. In fact I’ll be staying at The Racuet Club of Philadelphia in May.
