Good Barbecue that’s pretty quick for great price. We eat here for lunch once in awhile and I enjoy it every time.

This place is located just west of Kirtland AFB and used to have lines of people out the door. The food was very good and the service and atmosphere top notch. They now appear to be going down in flames.

I visited again on June 9th. I tried the green beans and ordered fries again for the sides. No flavor at all for the green beans. So far i cant see anything other than fries being a good side item here. My three meats were brisket 3, ribs 3, and chicken 3.5. I was disappointed in my visit the second time around. Now I feel like my old review will mislead people.

I really wanted to be a fan of this place– its super close to where we live so its getting 1 star for location but thats all it does have going for it. I ordered the stuffed spud with beef brisket– First off we were brought a basket of what I can only assume was supposed to be cornbread? that was super dry and not very good at all. My potato was very disappointing the brisket was shredded and not sliced and there was very little of it and what there was it was drowning in a not so great bbq sauce(to much and to sweet for my taste.) The ONLY chunk of brisket in my spud tasted dry and not tender at all. The toppings again were lacking– I couldn’t taste the cheese and the only reason I know there was some in there is because there was a couple of strands visible on my plate and the same with the sour cream. I am disappointed to say I wont be returning– I went in with an open mind and hoping for greatness but thats not what I received. I guess Rudys will be keeping me as a customer.

Worst BBQ place I’ve ever been to. Ordered the spicy cajun fries and it was a basket of overly greasy fries with stiff melted cheese. The brisket and ribs tasted like they had been sitting in juices for days. It was a plate of moosh. Don’t even get me started on the shrimp that tasted old… they definately were not fresh. I guess what do I expect from seafood in NM right. Also, the sweet tea tasted like they used dirty faucet water. My kids dont normally complain about food at restaurants and even they said it wasnt good. In my daughters words, «I give it 5 out of 10… mom they took all the good flavor out of the food».

Best BBQ in Albuquerque. The staff is nice and friendly and the ribs are meaty and fall off the bone. Sausage and briscuit is also amazing! Such amazing food for a decent price. Highly recommend. Been coming here for years.

«Meh» or two stars is about all I got for JR’s Bar-B-Que. I was told I need to check it out, and I wish I hadn’t so I could avoid writing this review. It’s alight… that’s about how I feel about it all. I’ve been in Little Rock, Arkansas for the past two years, and they know how to BBQ some Pork. My short travels in Texas have helped me find some ideal beef brisket. I guess what I am saying is to seek out some better BBQ in the ABQ, but I digress. The servings, while substantial, weren’t that impressive. The brisket was meh, the pork about the same, and the links were meh and greasy. On a better note the best part of my meal was the Sweet Tea, but sadly I’ve also had better. It wasn’t the worst experience I’ve had. I just wish it was better, and was worth the hype. The person who suggested I am sure is about the little guy like I am, but I wish it was tasty… The other thing about JR’s is that it doesn’t know what it wants to be. I was confused by the décor, and I was left wondering… Anywho, I’ll give JR’s one more try in the near future, and hopefully at that point I’m a little more impressed. Until that day this is the review that will stand for a BBQ spot that doesn’t quite hold a candle to the other BBQ I’ve experienced.

We had Jr’s cater our wedding. Not only was the food the absolute best bar b que we’ve ever eaten but the owners personally met with us to discuss as well as recommend the menu choices for our wedding. We were treated like family. they invited us in to sample the food, sat with us, discussed how everything would work on our wedding day. they made us feel so special. The day of our wedding they over delivered. the food was perfect, every guest had plenty to eat and the service was everything they promised and more. We cannot recommend Jr’s enough. Went there for a quick evening meal on Saturday. It took forever to get our drinks. They weren’t that busy. The wait staff and counter staff were very friendly and outgoing, which helped me overlook the length of time for the drinks. The food was real good and the rolls were a nice addition to the experience. I had their green chile chicken stew with a side salad, and it was okay, nothing special, but filled the void. All in all not a bad little place and the prices are good. I will go back and try their chef salad… from what my buddies said. there’s were phenomenal.

Love the bread. Service is great. Evening are quiet and quick. Lunch times are the busiest but food is still great. Always enjoy a cup of sweet tea in to go cup.

Yay! I actually am a fan of this place. Not only do they have good food, but also friendly staff working for them. I have been going here for the past 3 years and never once have they let me down. You must try their brisket, well marinated, and the taste is just awesome, ask them to put a bit fat in there, it’s the flavourful part. Also their chicken is very well done, and cheap! Must also try fried mushroom, crunchy, fully, joocy at the same time.

I thought we may enjoy going to a new place to eat. Unfortunately the bbq was not great. It was not very flavored and after forcing it down left more to be desired. The oysters were good but the price not all that great. All I can say is I’m glad I didn’t do the all you can eat.

This place is set back from the street so I missed it the first time I drove by. After eating there, I wish I wouldn’t have turned back around. I opted for a three-meat combo plate: brisket, sausage, and chicken, along with mashed potatoes and cole slaw. The brisket was sinewy, had no smoky flavor, and was drowned in watery bbq sauce. The sausage was about as good as the stuff you can buy at Walmart, and the chicken was juicy but lacked seasoning. The cole slaw was decent, while the instant mashed potatoes were awful. The cashier and server were friendly, although my tea was never refilled. This place seems to be pretty popular with the military crowd, but I was not impressed.

I tried this place for the first time and was pretty disappointed the brisket was dry, chicken was bland, Turkey was dry but the dry rub ribs were good. There sauce was a bit to sweet for me and wasn’t spicy enough for my taste. As far as sides the slaw seemed fresh but the baked beans and potato salad were just a bit to boring for me. If your looking for BBQ I recommend Rudy’s hands down.

The ribs were tough and dry and as such I had to chew them for an extraordinarily long time, and whenever I get to chewin, I get to thinkin, «I wonder if my teeth are dull.» I kept thinking about how a real carnivore would have ripped those ribs right off the hog. «Maybe all the ice I chewed at the movie theater when I was kid has worn my molars down like hippopotamus molars…» Anyway you get the point. Mashed potatoes are classic school cafeteria style, processed, served in the form of an ice-cream scoop, and covered in that timeless white gravy stuff delivered in large metal containers by government truck. The fried okra was totally burnt and crusty and black. Funny thing about burnt, crusty, black, dried out fried okra — it’s still pretty good… if you have sufficient hot sauce.(btw, I didn’t like their hot sauce — no heat.) The brisket wasn’t bad. Brisket is never bad.

I should know that when you walk in a place at 7pm on a Thursday night and there is only one table with customers, just turn around and leave. This place was terrible: No smoke flavor on the meat; brisket wasn’t tender; came drowning in a bland sauce; BBQ beans were just plain pintos; didn’t have two other sides I wanted; etc. etc. If this place wasn’t right next to the base it wouldn’t survive. Frankly, I’m still not sure how it does even with the location. They were even out of paper towels in the men’s room. Just awful all around.

There’s an old black guy in the back who’s been working that spit for God knows how long. That’s seriously all you need to know. It’s right next to the Air Force Base and you’ll be able to tell as soon as you walk in. A lot of pilots leave memorabilia on the walls. Some of the tables are just wood benches brought inside which is fun for a group setting. Don’t try any of the New Mexican stuff, seriously. Don’t waste your time. Go for the Meat Combos. And If the BBQ somehow, someway doesn’t win you over, the rolls will leave you no chance whatsoever.

A friend introduced us to JR’s in 1995, and told us that this was the only barbecue in town that he could eat and NOT get indigestion. That says one of two things: either the sauce is not that good, or the sauce is really good but someone has been prudent with the chili powder! At JR’s the sauce is really really good. Unfortunately, JR’s is totally on the other side of town from where we live, so our visits here are few and far between. But we have never been disappointed, no matter what time of day we have visited. We know enough about the military(retired Navy) to know to avoid ANY place within a mile of a military base between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., as it will be overrun with soldiers/sailors/airmen. JR’s packs ‘em in at lunch, and it doesn’t do too bad at dinner either. I would strongly recommend the turkey and the pulled pork. Having grown up in the South, I do know barbecue, and BEEF. IS. NOT. INTENDED. TO. BE. CALLEDBARBECUE. It is beef with some BBQ sauce thrown on it. True barbecue is a pork shoulder, slow-cooked in an enclosed shed outdoors over a hickory-chip fire for about 24 hours, to a point where it just falls off the bone. There is no slicing good pork BBQ. JR’s makes good barbecue, but they don’t have the shed to cook it in. All of the sides are adequate, but the rolls are truly good. I also would strongly recommend that you plan to meet nature’s call somewhere else than JR’s. The restrooms(at least the ladies’) is not exactly friendly for space, etc. Given that the building looks somewhat like an 1880s cabin in the woods, the restroom seems to have been added as an afterthought to the building, and it’s not user-friendly at all. I truly love JR’s barbecue; my only wish is that they would reopen a location in Rio Rancho – they weren’t overrun with customers when they were here, but we were devotees and took our out-of-town guests here for a good meal. Make sure you check it out. You’ll think twice about going to Rudy’s or anywhere else.
