The best hackerspace in ABQ! And the best way to get familiar with everything they have to offer is to stop by for a visit. Their«open hours» are currently 7 – 10 pm on Sundays and Tuesdays. Since the space is member and community driven, it is constantly evolving based on the members’ project needs. The most resent AWESOME-ness comes in the form of a new Laser Cutter/Engraver. Recently donated from our friends in Tucson, it will be available to any members who have taken the safety training course. Furthermore, the 2nd of the public 3-D printers will be up and running«soon.» The 1st community 3-D printer is open for business already, but the new one will have so many bells and whistles(up to 8 print heads, 1500″ print volume), it’s gonna be sick! Educational, hands-on, creative, incubator of ideas, schemes, projects, and all around fun.

Contestant: Alex, I’ll take Geeks for eight hundred. (Queue stupid laser-zapping sound effect from the 80’s.) Alex: You’ve hit today’s daily double! How much would you like to wager? Contestant: Uh, let’s go with two thousand, Alex. Alex: That’ll make you the leader if you get this right. Two thousand. Okay, so the answer is: «Albuquerque’s Hackerspace.» Contestant: What is… Quelab? Alex: That’s correct! The Duke City has a hummin’ hackerspace, indeed, and it’s about to blow up. Attention futurists: this lil’ shack(about 6,000 square feet of pure imagination and cranial connectivity) is crafting a community of people from every walk of life who dream in the über, they see things ten or fifty years out and they’re just dyin’ to create it. Screw The Man, they’re just gonna do it. You gotta check this space out. The old and young, College educated and otherwise, a huge demographic of everyday peeps own this place. $ 40 a month gives them 24-hour access to the facility, tools and resources; techie entrepreneurs find this monetary pittance an absolute must. Over the past six or so years, Quelab has been the hub for ABQ tech enthusiasts. They now have a compound complete with 3D printers, a laser cutter, a shop, education sessions and plenty of bright minds that propagate brilliance. Come May 2014 the space will also open to the masses. In the meantime join them for hacknight, 7 – 10 pm Tuesday and Sunday evenings, geeking out on what can only be described as digital delight. I took the tour, this is one smart non-profit worth your support.

I’m a tinkerer,(sometimes described as a Geek of all trades), i do electronics, and photography, and chemistry, and wood working, and locks, and puzzles and optics, and recycled things. Quelab is a perfect fit for me, while i can build many of my creations at home I need others to help me when i get stuck, and also a place that people can ask me about projects or things. because helping others helps me learn new things too. Ive even built a rocket engine out of a candybar there! Quelab is a community workspace, where people can share/use tools, learn new skills and most of all learn to invent, and tinker and make!
