AAMCO Transmissions

This place is sketchy. It’s run by crooks. I am considering reporting the to the BBB b/​c of their fraudulent behavior. The gears in my car were slipping so I took my car in to AAMCO to have them check it out. The next day the called and told me that the transmission was shot, a part was broken that was irreplaceable, and that I needed to replace my whole transmission costing thousands of dollars. (Mind you I drove the car in and drove it out when I left)
I decided to take my car to the dealer for a second opinion. When I came to pick up the car the owner of this location tried very hard to talk me out of going to the dealer which was automatically a red flag. He told me that the dealer would try to rip me off, etc. (says the con man haha)
Took it to the dealer and found out that there was no problem at all with the transmission. The problem was with the computer system. Fixing the computer was covered under warranty and cost nothing.
So, to clarify. The story that AAMCO gave about my transmission having a busted part and it being broken was a COMPLETE LIE. If I had listened to them the would have charged me thousands to fix my transmission (unnecessarily) only to find that the gears were slipping still. AVIOD THIS LOCATION AT ALL COSTS. You could come in with a flat tire and they’d tell you you need a new transmission.

My 2006 Toyota Camry’s check engine light was on so I made an appointment to have it checked out. After having my car all day and no contact about about the diagnostic test showed, I went to pick up my car.
On arrival, I spoke with the owner who apologized for not contacting me. When I asked what the problem was with my car, I got a series of questions.
1. How long have you owned the car?
2. Are you the original owner?
3. Have you ever had the transmission serviced?
4. What service did it receive?
After answering all of the questions, and feeling very suspicious of his motivations, I was told my transmission was shot. I asked to see the results of the diagnostic and what codes were displayed. He then said he didn’t know and would have to connect my car back to the diagnostic. At this point, I asked for my keys back and left.
After taking it somewhere else and explaining my initial experience, the diagnostics called for my O2 sensors to be replaced. Not a problem with my transmission.
I would advise you to be careful and question if you choose to use this garage for service.

After getting my oil changed at a mechanic, I was told that there was a transmission issue with my car, and I took my car directly over to AAMCO to have it assessed. I didn’t realize that they were closed on Saturday afternoons, but Fred (the manager), happened to be at the location anyway. He saw me parked there, and even though it was after hours, Fred still took my car for a test drive. He explained to me in detail what was going on with my car, and he gave me an honest diagnostic and estimate of how much it would cost to repair or replace the transmission. There were absolutely no surprises, and he was completely straightforward. The transmission is working very well, and Fred even offered a follow-​up a couple weeks after the transmission replacement to make sure everything was working well. Excellent work on the car and terrific service!

I asked a «car guy friend» at work for a recommendation for a shop to have the timing belt replaced on my 99 Acura TL. He sent me to this AAMCO. The manager, Fred, was friendly and easy to work with. When they also found broken motor mounts he called first to get authorization, then he showed me the broken mounts when I picked the car. The car has 150k miles and runs like a top. I take all my car work to him now.

I bought a Living Social coupon administered through Statewide Promotions, and when I went to book my appointment, AAMCO said that they no longer allow those PAID coupons to be used. Even if this was their policy, there is a right and a wrong ethically. My coupon has NO expiration date mind you. I am currently in the process of handling this legally, but regardless of the outcome, they have assured that I will never do business there. In addition to this review, I own a business 2 blocks down, and have become a part of this neighborhood. I make sure that everybody that visits my store is aware. GO ELSEWHERE

I took my truck (1990 Chevy step van) here for a second opinion after another shop recommended a complete transmission replacement because it wouldn’t shift out of first gear.
They wanted $ 4500 to rebuild it without a warranty, where the other shop would install a rebuild with a 3 year 100K mile warranty for $ 3500.
But then it gets better! They damaged my truck getting it into their shop: They broke a mirror off, damaged the stainless steel serving shelf (it’s a food truck), and ripped the floodlight off the side of the truck.
They only told me about the mirror, too, leaving me to «discover» the rest of the damage myself.
NOT happy.
