Pinecrest Golf Course

This is one of my favorite public courses. I get the exercise during the 9 hole walk. The course is managed well. It’s convenient to my home and I can meet fellow golfers on an early Sunday morning.

Great course. Forces novice players to work on accuracy and irons. Friendly staff.

Not very challenging — or a boost to your golf ego (depending on your point of view) — but a reasonably– priced way to spend 2 hours.
And yes, the 8^th is cool/​evil (depending…)

This course is only 9 holes, and has only three par-​5 holes to challenge you long. So be ready to work your short game as well as maintain your focus to hit the ball with accuracy on all holes… This course is one of my favorites to play on do to the ease to get on… you can play with a cart on this course, but I recommend you get your walk in on this course, as you will stay a little more focused and do less ball chasing… with a restaurant and small shopping plaza next door, you can also grab some food and drinks after your done!
Tip: come ready to play. they do have a driving range, but your hitting into a net, which is not good to see your distance or ball placement.

Don’t come here under some kind of delusion that you’re playing at the Breakers or the Homestead and you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Pinecrest is very well maintained for a public course and very reasonably priced. I’m a total hacker, so if you’re an excellent golfer, I imagine it will be too easy for you.
Except for the 8^th hole. The 8^th hole is designed for you to lose balls. The creek, which is apparently a tributary of the River Styx, and the trees to the right have some kind of ball magnetism, and I never make it over the pond, so don’t play the ball you found on a memorable golf date, or your lucky ball, or your last pink ball because you’ll lose it. It will be swallowed by the ball-​stealing Ents who grow by the creek, and if it makes it past there, it will be grabbed by the vicious golf-​hating mermaids who live in the pond.
Lots of people walk the course here, so if you really stink and making par is about as likely as sprouting wings, get a cart and if you’re behind some walkers, you’ll be just in time for your turn at the tee. It’s a pretty narrow course, and you’ll get a lot of cart path love, particularly on the 4^th hole, but you’ll be looking for your ball a lot or hitting onto the wrong fairway if you’re too inaccurate.
My main complaint is that there is no real driving range. Just nets, so, in my case, I’m still trying to work out which is the best club for a particular yardage, but all you can really tell is if it «sounded» good or if you are hitting wildly in one direction or another, presaging a lot of lost balls. They evidently have an indoor driving range, but I’ve never seen it. Oh, and, for some reason, their liquor license for having beer out on the course hasn’t been approved yet, so you can have a beer in the clubhouse, but not in the cart. [Down with puritan liquor laws! Down with bureaucracy!]

My husband and I played here this morning for the first time. It’s a mile from my house so it’s great to get a game in before work.
Pinecrest is a 9 hole, par 35 course with a few difficult 5 par holes. There are a few par 3 holes, and I actually scored par both times! Being a beginning golfer, I was pretty damn excited about that. The par 5s are blind, but the signage gives you hints about where to place the ball. You do have to hit across a water hazard to get to the green on the 8^th hole which is one of the par 5s.
The course is quite narrow, and I lost a few balls even though they were bright pink. After reading one of the reviews, I was nervous about houses being very close to the fairways, but I didn’t even come close to hitting someone’s property, so I wouldn’t worry too much.
The fee is $ 17 during non-​prime time, and it was pretty quiet on a Tuesday morning at 7:40, so we didn’t feel pressured to speed up. We had pull carts and finished in 2 hours.
The condition of the greens and tee boxes are what drags down the rating to a 3. They were definitely very chopped up and missing grass. But, I don’t care too much about that – it’s a public course after all and well priced.

I walked in to find out that this public golf course was reduced to a 9-​hole golf course and the driving range was converted to a netted one to accommodate more housing developments. What a shame! The two young guys working there were very friendly and helpful, one of them named Dennis. They gave us information on another driving range, offered to give us their number in case we got lost. That was the nicest service we received even though we were heading to another golf course.
Good people and great attitude do make a difference, poor service industry — learn from these people!!!

This course is good for the money. There aren’t a whole lot of decent affordable courses in the area, so this one gets major bonus points for location and price. $ 21 to walk 9 during primetime, $ 15 or so to walk 9 during the week or twilight (After 530pm). The greens are surprisingly clean and lively. Fairways are good enough, rough isnt that rough. The course itself is small, its not very long. I can drive up to the green on a couple par 4’s. It is narrow, forcing you to stay straight, except on a few holes where a power-​fade (or a slice lol) will actually help you out. Once you’ve played the course a couple times you can learn to set your shots up, as some 2^nd shots will work best when aiming for a green that you cannot see.
One thing that I was concerned with is there are quite a few homes along the course, and community roads with frequent traffic. A few signs clearly state the Golfer is responsible for any damage, and as someone who can hit a pretty mean hook/​slice at times, that was a little troubling.
The clubhouse is small, nothing special, but I wasnt expecting much at this Public County course, so thats fine. Limited food/​drink items, standard accessories available for purchase. The old crotchety starter guy can be an asshole, but aren’t most old crotchety starters/​rangers? The driving range is just a hitting net, I havent used it and wouldnt pay to hit balls into a net anyways. They do have a putting green, no chipping area.
Overall for the location and price its a pretty good deal. I’ve been here a couple times and will continue to play here periodically as I live 2 miles away. There are better courses, sure, but you’ll also pay more. Decent enough course to keep me coming back once or twice a month.

The course looked fairly well except for the divots not being repaired on the greens by players. I did not like the ignorant golfer who told the starter «We don’t really want them here anyways» when we asked if there were any available tee times. I don’t think the starter said much besides smirk, but the golfer was an ass.
The course can make you stack up at certain spots. Hole 2 is a 220 yard par 4 so it is like playing 2 par 3’s back to back.
I’ll continue to golf here bi-​monthly as long as I’m in the Arlington area.

I have to admit I am a little biased because I consider Pinecrest my home course since its so convenient to me and I have played it a lot more then any other course.
None of that is to say I don’t think Pinecrest is without fault. I think the course is well taken care of for a Muni, but since the price of the course is so cheap it does attract new players of the game, who don’t know how to repair divots or pitch marks on the green. So it isn’t always in the best shape and there is the occasional gaggle of geese you have to contend with.
Don’t listen to the people who review this course and are expecting it to be Augusta National. Its a fun course with a nice staff, for around $ 20 at peak hours you really can’t go wrong with it.

For inside the Beltway golfing, it’s an OK course. A 9 hole Fairfax County municipal course, Pinecrest offers a few nice holes, several with water coming into play. I had the luck to play with several volunteer marshals who helped guide my shots. This was necessary due to many blind approaches on Par 4s. As has been mentioned, there are very few yardage markers so you really need to rely on instinct to play here.
The prices are affordable and considering it’s inside the Beltway, I think it’s a great value. The only course to really compare it to is East Potomac in DC. While East Potomac is a full 18, the quality of the holes are abysmal. At least at Pinecrest, water comes into play.
Also, don’t plan on warming up at their «driving range». They are really just booths with nets. You can get a better «range» at your local golf store.

Why don’t they build more golf courses within the beltway? Oh wait that’s right, because there’s not enough space there. If I have an opportunity for an eagle putt on a par 4 (Hole #2) and my name is not Tiger Woods, then something is wrong.
No yardage markers anywhere, and «aerated» fairways (aka dirt rocks everywhere). Normally, I’m down for a bargain, but this is just kind of ridiculous.
Don’t waste your money with the driving range. It’s the equivalent of the tee box at Dick’s. Normally I would give this a 1 star, but it’s the closest golf course to work, and if traffic is really bad, then I don’t really have much choice.

Pinecrest is one of my favorite municipal 9-​hole golf course in the area. The course is challenging just enough but not to the point of hopelessness. There are at least two holes with par 5. The fairways are narrow so it requires more strategic playing. The starters and marshals that I’ve met are so nice.
